The Color of Monday

So I'm perusing the morning news and I see this picture of Anderson Cooper at a fundraiser. In the backdrop, there's a logo in the shape of a piece of pool chalk that said Ping Pong Billiards. Mac cosmetics was another sponsor of the fundraiser for AIDS.

After some googling, searching with various keywords, I found the source: Chalk Ping Pong and Billiards in Miami. The first upcoming event was yesterday on the calendar, which was, as the title of my thread suggests, "The Color of Monday."

If I lived in Miami, I'd love to hang out at this pool room. Has anybody been there? Look at the calendar of events and the press releases from this joint. They have tournaments for pros. You can pay membership dues, if you like, much like a country club. They feature Diamond pool tables. I kind of like this spot.

Here's the picture which the chalk logo that piqued my interest.

All is well with me. Hope all is well with you too, my friend!

Check out this private room called "The Vault" at this pool room for private parties. I wish they had a pool room like this in my area. We don't have any pool rooms anymore. They're either game rooms for kids with video games and pinball or bars with loud music.

Hi Jen;

+3 on it being nice to see you here.

this joint does look like a really cool place to play and hang out.

reminds me of my home room which, unfortunately, closed after 8 years just last month. It was the "Blue Cube Billiards & Lounge".

Upscale, trendy, nicely maintained equipment, great staff . . .

just not enough people coming through the door to keep it going in this economy. :frown:

man I miss that place.

hope this room in Miami is doing well.

Miami is very progressive. I wish the club was there when I was at The U.

I have been thinking long and hard about retiring. If I do retire, I will sell my house and move. I was offered a salaried position here in my area, with benefits, but the pay just isn't as high as what I am making now, so I'm not going to go for it.

There are four depressed markets for real estate right now, and Florida is one of them, as is Vegas, parts of Arizona, and Detroit.

I looked at some very cool houses in Vegas to buy. You can get a brand-new 2,000-square-foot home with all the amenities for less than $200,000. The only thing that bothered me was during the day, the homes looked like they were in the middle of a desert. When I look out my windows, I can see a lot of green -- trees, bushes, grass, flowers, nature. In Vegas, I'm not sure I'd enjoy looking out the window and seeing rocks and sand. :frown:

Florida is a good choice for me. I'd still be on the East Coast, and there's plenty of pool action there for my other half. But then there's those hurricanes and flying cockroaches. I might rent my house and live in Florida in a rental unit to see if I like it first. ;)

Detroit also has some excellent real estate opportunities, but I don't know if I can hack those cold winters. It snows in Detroit, a lot more than it does where I live now. :o

Arizona seems very nice. My nephew lives in Yuma. One of brothers lives in Southern California right now and the other lives in Northern California. There are beautiful homes there for sale at an excellent price. I'm not sure I can hack the heat, the lizards, the poisonous spiders, and snakes. My brother did say, though, that the lizards eat the bugs, but I don't want to wake up and have a lizard in my bed.

But check out these attractive listings of new homes:

Tuscon, Arizona -- $238,000, 2,000 square feet, 3 bedroom, 2 baths

Las Vegas, Nevada -- $234,000, 2,500 square feet, 3 bedroom, 2 baths

Detroit, Michigan -- $242,000, 2,500 square feet, 4 bedroom, 2.5 baths

Winter Garden, Florida -- Upper 190s, 3 bedroom, 2 baths

Decisions, decisions! :p

JAM,
Great to hear from you, thought about emailing you a few times when I didn't see you here but......:embarrassed2:
Glad to hear that you're well!

Thanks, Pushout, for the good thoughts. I've been working hard, was thinking about a government job offer that came my way, but I changed my mind. Truth be told, I was concerned about how social media and forum posting would affect me getting a clearance. I understand that the military frowns on its members actively engaging in social media sites.

"Blue Cube Billiards." I like that name. It looks like a cool place to shoot pool.

We have nothing like that here where I live. It's sickening. I can drive an hour or two each way and might find a cool spot, but that's about it.

Pool rooms are dying a slow death in my area. All the good ones are gone.

Hi Jam! Nice to see you posting again!

Concerning your comment above, it's not true that the military frowns on its members actively engaging in social media sites. A couple of my Navy shipmates -- who are still in, finishing up their 30 years for retirement (something I now wished I'd done, but I digress...) -- are actively engaged, and post a couple times daily on their goings-on. Keep in mind, these are now senior-ranking folks -- E8 (Senior Chief Petty Officer, enlisted ranks) in one instance; a full-bird Captain (officer ranks) in another). I follow their postings avidly.

I'm sure the military *would* frown on certain topics being posted or discussed, like, for example, info that's supposed to be classified or confidential (e.g. like what maneuvers their ship is doing), but for the most part, as long as it's just "social" stuff, they turn a blind eye to it. Then again, that could be for folks that are already "in" -- entrance into the military might be a different matter entirely.

I find that starched white collar jobs tend to be more aggressive in wanting to know one's posting history on social media sites. There've been several instances of high-profile executives being asked to step down because of their involvement in social media sites.

This place is way too trendy for my small-town lifestyle. I imagine that in a place like that, the bass would be cranked so high, the balls would be moving around.

I've only been there once, but I really liked Society Billiards in Manhatten.

That's a neat looking place, I would definitely check it out if I was in the area.
I still love the old school pool rooms though, they are not nearly as nice as this but they have that certain something, maybe it's the history. I don't know.

Good to see ya back JAM.

They would only care if you were reading Wikileaks. I have a friend that posts here that just got a job in the government no problem.

Wow! That's right down the road from me and I've never been. I'll have to change that. Move over Miami Randy, Woof Biscuit is coming through!!!

Welcome back!

Always nice to see you posting. Buying low is always a good move. Just buy in a strong job market. Where you are has a super strong job market! Plus, a ton of work for you. The only problem is pool is dying here and everywhere else.

Only place with good pool and great cheap homes due to katrina is new orleans. Its warm good pool according to brandon shuff. Some naval and military work assignments possibly and good food and music. I think you two would be happy there.

But,we sure would miss you guys here!!!
