I am having an ebony hoppe style traditional cue built and I'm having a hard time deciding on the leather wrap...originally I was going with a regular lizard print black wrap but now I'm wondering if I may like something else, like kangaroo or elepahant etc..any experience or advice is welcome money is not really an object, I'm more concerned with look and feel...thanks in advance.

I would go with something like elephant myself can't beat it as far as I'm concerned

My original Brunswick Willie Hoppe Professional came 50 years ago with a simple, smooth black leather wrap. It has held up to this day. I liked the simplicity of the wrap and also the understated appearance.

I ve actually never had an elephant wrap and I do like smooth black...especially the kangaroo, I'm just concerned the seem will really show against the smooth leather without texture...I really like the black boars hide that phillippi uses but I'm not sure where to find it

friend just got a hoppe style from m. durbin. has an elephant wrap and i love it on there. feels great.

As long as the installer is competent you should have no problems with a smooth leather wrap.

Some of my favorites include

Black Boar Hide
Spanish Bull Oil Tanned
Bison

I am not a lizard fan, I like the looks not the feel. I hear good things about Kangaroo, but never personally seen or felt it.

I like real lizard but for my hoppe titlist I had Steve Lomax put on a smooth shiny Black Leather wrap.

Here's a a couple of pictures.

Feel is waaaaaaaaaaaaay more of a concern to playing the game, and looks is something Completely different.....but the grip, interacts with your body, skin, sweat, dirt and conditions where as look has to do with other concerns NOT related to playing good. You'll either like it or not, may depend on the finish or lack of with the leather, or the tack or lack of with the leather. You may have to add lanolin to soften or not, it's personal, and if you look at the top pros, how many use leather, my guess, and its just a guess, 5%.....

Elephant ear has the most amazing feel. Pricy, but real nice.

Although I never cared for the feel of a leather wrap (an acquired taste), I think the choice should compliment the motif of the cue.
In addition, a textured leather will hide a seam a little better than a smooth leather wrap.

Elephant ear is nice...so is smooth glove leather and shark. I personally like french calf or pigskin

Doug Patrick is building me a cue. I went by his shop a few weeks ago and decided on the elephant ear after feeling some of the others

Ok... Ya all got me leaning towards elepahant now... Where is the best source to get it..?
