If you had your druthers what length would any one like ebony squares in? Going to be cutting up some in about 5 weeks.

Hi Any of those lengths . anything shorter that 12 is handle stock , I like my forarms min. 14" .

Black and 2+ years old. Will need a little drying time yet. Have not determined a price yet. Will also have 4" sections for butt sleeves, 5/8" squares for points and inlay slabs - width will vary, 10" long and .175 or so thick. Will have pics of squares when cut, will have pics of the cants Monday afternoon.
 
I generally prefer 18" for Ebony. That way I get a Forearm and plenty left over for Sleeves or slicing up to use in Rings.

Bob, you might want to consider making some just for Forearms if you have big blocks or wide planks. Personally I think 1-1/2" squares are too big.

Ebony sizes

I'll take a few different lengths as long as the quality is good. all Black, if you have odd pieces you want to get rid of I'll take those with the regular length pieces 14, 16, 18, 12, 10, 4, and most sizes I can use.
 
I like 16 0r 18". Hopefully you will post pics of just how black to not full black. Sounds great, thanks

Bruppert, you may be correct. If 18" is wanted just to get the butt sleeve and forearm out of the same piece than it may be more cost effective to cut 1.25 x 14 separate from 1.5 x 4 for butt sleeve. If 1.5 x 18 are needed I can cut them.

Around 4-6 and as you said price/quality make a huge difference. I have been very very disappointed with my last 1/2 dozen ebony purchases. Nobody from AZ, a couple were from ebay so I should have known better, but now I am starting to be really leary of any ebony purchases.

Let me know what you would be willing to do, I am just starting out & would really like to stock up on a few long ebony pieces for full splices later on down the road.

Really good ebony is becoming harder and harder to find at any price. The countries with the best ebony can no longer sell/bought from any longer and you are competing against musical instrument makers for the best. You need to find yourself the best dealer that you can trust and hope you get what you pay for. I sure wish I had the thousands of dollars that I've wasted over the years buying second and third grade materials at first grade prices.

When you find someone you can trust buy as much as you feel you will use in a lifetime or even two lifetimes. Ebony and some other exotic woods are just like seafood. It's being used much faster than it can be re-produced and the price and quality is is never going to get better. It's much better than having money in the bank as you can sell your extra at a much, much better rate than interest you will earn.

Here is a pic of the two cants, they are quite large, together weighing in at 316lbs. This is West African or Gaboon Ebony. Will start cutting in about 6 weeks.
