This forum is in deep decline. Those of us that actually like to talk pool must find a way to bring the dying patient called the AZB main forum back to life.

Even when members are spared the start of non-pool-related threads in the main forum, every thread these days remains a candidate to turn into something either offensive or useless. In fact, hijacking of threads almost ensures that even the best threads will become meritless at some point, uncivil posters are regularly and routinely defended, and offended parties are often told to develop thicker skin.

Sad times are these on the AZB forum, but if we all set our minds to it, we can turn it back into a pool forum. Let's use the Mosconi Cup to relaunch the main forum into somehting that is, once again, pool focused. No need to point fingers here, for we are all in this mess together, and we all have a role in making this forum pool related again.

We must not forget that even the most contentious debates can be conducted with civility and respect for each other, but those who persist in posting abusively devalue this forum.

I don't know what forum you've been witnessing for YEARS...but this seems to be exactly the same forum I've been witnessing for YEARS....30% excellent content....30% Drama Queen stuff and the rest somehwere in between.

It's just that you have to average the posts over several months to achieve the above stats. Often...as in recently...the Drama Queen stuff is about 80%.

But Ribdoner referenced the wrong gastrointentinal disorder to describe it. It's more like diarrhea than constipation.

this thread is a paradox, because it is not pool

I thought about it long and hard before I posted it, you summarized my thoughts/feelings very accurately.

Its not the mod's fault in any event. I have seen forums go south because of mods. Thats not the case here. Banning people clearly isnt working.

Looking at the solution, not the problem-I have no answers. If I did i'd share them.

the pool is 36 yes's and 5 no's. It shows that it takes a very few people to screw things up for those who do care.

Another intersting thing happened the other day, I knew ahead of time about the BB delay and why, in a VERY long thread I explained it very clearly the why and whats of what was going on. Nobody questioned me, I was just blasted for being the village idiot. I only know Larry, and the inspectors who are giving him shit for the past 7 months, I sold a house a mile from BB last year. I really knew what I was saying, then the next day there is a press release from Larry/BB that validated everything I said here FIRST. Now why in the world do I have any motivation to post anything if all i'm going to do is catch shit for it, especially when it was factual information NOT a OPINION!!! It's a waste of my time when what I say falls on deaf ears?(now please quote this in a post and say "HUH?") THATS THE STUPID SHIT RUINING AZB> period.

Best

Well said. Actually, this thread is, essentially, pool related as it pertains to the matter of the gradual digression of the main forum from pool related topics. As you say, the online chatter can be very frustrating at times.

I agree with Stu this place is not at all what it once was. I am going to go hit some balls now.

Koln-Cologne Germany Carnival

I suggest staying in Venice through February since Carnivale is going on.

I'd recommend he try a stopover in Koln or Mainz, Germany for their Fasching(Mardis Gras) Festivals!!! That's some Crazeeeee Germans over there.

If you like the costumes and the wild Italians, Venice isn't bad, though!

Oh, yeah, there is a lot of drama on the main forum sometimes. That's why I confine myself mostly to NPR threads. We HEART drama!

There is nothing my 40 years of being involved in pool that I can offer in the main forum.

Same old Eric trying to talk about how important he is.
You couldn't say California is nice could you. Beverly Hills is nice, are you serious, you have what psychologists call "fake Napoleon" syndrome. Has to do with power, but not having any, being little in the grand scheme of things, and trying to get everyone in the world to care about you all the while telling them "I've done nothing wrong"

Ole Eric is tired of what is going on and worries about how this isn't a pool forum. Where is this big thing you're working on for pool, that you can't talk about right now, but just wait, it's going to turn pool around and start pumping money into billiards again.

Eric, I don't know if we can start a poll about where you should go, but I vote that you should to go whatever town around Monaco has no internet service.

Before you leave the forums though, that post of yours about 100 one hole was riveting, are you mad at how no one is interested in playing for what you have got. Tell us if you are going to stop by Zsa Zsa's house to say bye to the prince before you go. Where did you get your inside BB information from? Give us a hint, please.

Thanks Eric, we all appreciate the laughs you've given us over the years, go ahead and go to Monaco this week, no need to put it off

Lastly, I would love to hit some with you before you leave Friday. I'm just an old broken down guy, but we can post a large set and play some, heck, I'll even come to the Princes house or meet you at whatever pool hall you're a legend at.

QUOTE=Fatboy;3889345]dont worry about me, Beverly Hills is very nice and I'm very happy. I'm not interested in working anymore-tax's are too high for me. I'm taking the next 4-5 years off and then moving to Monaco/Italy.

I been out of the credit biz for 4 years and 8 months, perhaps you should update your knock. Thats old news. Funny thing I never go into trouble and I kept ALL the $$$ only to blow it on property in Vegas-LOL.

I'd turn your ass down, your not bright enough to sell to. I never sold anything to anyone who didnt have the mental capacity to understand what they were buying. Trans Union, Equifax both f whom I reported all transactions to loved our biz model, The FTC never had a problem from 98-08 when we closed the biz.

so how is your job treating you? get that $1.47/hr raise yet?[/QUOTE]

Here only 6 months and already 1,328 posts? :)

We could apply equal consternation to the fact that you have been here much longer and have made relatively much less contributions.
ENGLISH mixes it up pretty good.

This is not meant to be insulting, everyone's point of view is valuable.

Regardless of the poll question. AZ was, and still is the best pool forum out there. To think otherwise is ludecru..., ludacru..., silly.
What almost always happens (sometimes) is we get a little bored with the mundane ramblings of stuff like, "What's the best tip for my cue?", or "What's your favorite wrap color?", or (here's a good one) "I only started playing pool yesterday. Which low-deflection shaft should I buy?"
To counter act that boredom certain members (you know who you are) start stirring the pot, as it were, in order to liven things up a bit. The trouble, of course, is the pot gets overstirred and the shit starts going everywhere. The swat team gets called in, all hell breaks loose for a few days, then life around here slowly drifts back to normal. It's happened before, and it will happen again.
So. Regardless of the poll question. AZ was, and still is the best pool forum out there.

I think AZ is well worth the reading..if we want better, it is up to us, the
posters, to make it better.

I voted the second one, it seemed like the only reasonable choice.

We have this conundrum. The tone of any forum is set by the mods.
If the mods don't exercise their powers enough, a forum can go down the crapper fast.
However when they do ban or close threads, there's a lot of backlash, they get called nazis etc.

This is my wishlist for the forum -

• We could do with a second mod. I usually agree with Wilson's bans but he occasionally seems to make it personal. I think a second opinion would add some perspective. Maybe doing all the mod duties by himself has worn his patience thin over the years. Someone could lighten that load.

• Some people on here seem like basically decent human beings but are very defensive (Jam or Neil for example). Everyone, don't get your hackles up so easily. Most of the time, disagreeing about a topic is nothing personal. If you detect someone IS making it personal (by calling you names, or using your job or playing ability etc. in a debate) then just remind them it's just a difference of opinions, not combat.

You'd be surprised how often a friendly response leads to them apologizing. You'd be 100% unsurprised to find how often a nasty response leads to escalation and childish brawls.

If being nice to them doesn't work, there's a big red button you can use to report them to Wilson. Very often I've seen him warn or ban shortly after that button gets pressed. If they're truly out of line, the report button works.

• Stop throwing around the word "troll". If you're using that word, you're part of the problem. Nobody's signing up for the first time on AZ just to stir up trouble, completely unprovoked, because that's what gets them out of bed in the morning.

Guys like Pangit, Poolkiller, Thaiger... they get that label for having unpopular opinions, or for presenting them in a blunt way. Disagreeing with those opinions is fine. But learn to disagree with someone without namecalling. Calling someone a troll isn't any better than calling them a dickhead.

• Can you all drop the passive aggressive attacks? Don't call out specific posters in your sig (English, Thaiger), don't take snippy little potshots at someone just because you argued with them in the past (Jam) don't use your avatar to make some political jab (too many to count).

I'm sure everyone who does this feels they have a good reason, and if someone gets pissed off... good, they had it coming. But all it does is make you look like the instigator and generally contribute to the lousy negative atmosphere.

• "dog-with-a-bone" syndrome: where you absolutely have to have the last word in an argument. When you're about to make your tenth reply in a 20 page thread, ask yourself... "Can I imagine any possible way I'll change the other guy's mind? Or will they continue to believe what they want to believe?"

When you know your words will definitely not sway someone, but you keep throwing words at them anyway, what are you doing? How is that anything except a waste of time?

Since I keep naming names here, I'll add (CreeDo) as a prime offender. I couldn't resist fighting over CTE endlessly and I'm sure there are other examples.

...By the way, sorry in advance to those I mentioned by name. It's not personal, I just felt like I should give specific examples of what I'm talking about. And I know I'm not perfect, I'm sure anyone could find old posts of mine where I am not practicing what I preach. If you made it this far, thanks for reading.

What's ironic, if you put most of the drama group into a real setting at a pool room for a discussion, Very few would act out like they do behind a keyboard.

Agreed!

If you don't like the way things are then act differently. It might just catch on. I promise you it won't change just because you don't like it.

CreeDo is right.

I'm trying to resist the multiple reply, last word instinct myself. Guilty.

I would love to see people read CreeDo's post, take it to heart and change some of their behaviors. Do i expect that to happen, no. Sadly.

We could all behave better, here and in the real world.

+1

Tons of great advice in CreeDo's post. If it can move the needle for a few posters, that would be nice. Sadly though, IMO, either people "get it" or they don't - and they likely never will.

It takes a serious emotional event to change habitual behavior.
