Build a champion in a month or 2. Is this possible?

Seems to me if you gambled with someone for 11 games (not a set), and he was a willing customer... nobody can say you're a nit. He had 11 chances to walk away and he didn't, so he must have liked the game every time he chose to play it.

Zach gave the guy 11 shots at his money. At no point was anyone locked in and forced to play games he didn't really like. That's more than fair.

Not Zach's fault the guy was a slow learner and waited until 8 games to adjust. It was probably pretty clear after 3 or 4 games.

These are a few reasons why I don't like adjusting the weight on the same day:

1. My opponent, especially if I don't know their true speed, might be laying down, either to get a better spot or to bet higher when the spot really gets in his favor.

2. I might be a little tired (from whatever) and for me, there's no reason to play when I am tired, except in tournaments, where you have no choice.

3. My opponent, might be using me to get to someone else and if I adjust the spot, he can utilize that to unfairly match up with someone else.

4. If we both know one another's game, then sometimes you're the bug and sometimes you're the windshield. Accept it and play another day.

5. I failed to mention the other nefarious situation, my opponent might be playing tired while he was losing but once he gets the spot, he might become stimulated, either naturally or artificially. I've known many players who make out like they don't care if they win or not with a tough game, whine for a spot, then play two balls above their game once they get the adjustment.

A few years ago, I played a TOP CHAMPION getting 12-5 (one pocket), four-ahead for $200. We see-sawed back and forth for a few hours. By then it was midnight and it was a weekday (and I work during the daylight hours). The TOP CHAMPION asked if we could continue the match tomorrow evening as he was tired. It made sense for me since I had to work so I agreed. A few years later, I am still waiting to complete the set. I know that he is an honorable man and we will finish this set. It's just a matter of time and character and he has plenty of character.

Almost 7:00PM and Zack is still sleeping..........

We were both pretty wore out. Zack from no sleep and me from just being me. Diabetic and 60.

Zack was at this point that no player should be at. he had absolutely no thing left in the tank.

As he was playing he was just going through the motions. The effort was sporatic at best. The heart was there but the mind and body were not.

His young eyes were now bloodshot and all the bounce in his step was gone. It's hard when a player is at this point to say uncle but as you get more seasoning and have been through it for years it's easier to pull up the horses and play another day.

If your losing you can quit and if your ahead you can quit. You can always continue this contest tomorrow or the next day.

And when I tell a player that I need to quit myself it's also about health. I could have a stroke or a heat attack being diabetes. There is no pool game in the world worth that.

if the player puts up a big stink or even tries to get tough i tell them lets post up some money and come back tomorrow night.

It will take Zack a day or two to recover from this meaningless matchup.

he again was drinking those darn energy drinks that he thinks help him play. That spike in your mind is only temporary. I need to convince him somehow that they serve no benefit at all.

For myself I'm hoping I'm done with this lung thing and the smoke. I couldn't breath for about 3 hours when layed down to sleep. it was like I had sand in my lungs and a tickle that forced me to cough.

It kind of scared me because it just kept on and kept on. I had to sleep.

I hope there is nothing permanent going on with my lungs. Only time will tell. But for now I will stay away from any and all cigerrette smoke.

that is what created this problem in my lungs and hopefully being out of the second hand smoke will cure it.

For Zack and myself it's back to having some fun. Only there won't be much action for Zack today. he has another lesson to learn. It's called the day after play on no sleep drinking energy drinks and depleting your body to the point of being total exausted.

you need to recover for a day. I know at 23 you don't think so and feel pretty invincible but being through this many time in my life i know better.

I call it getting grounded. getting your mind level again and your body back in a good functioning manner.

It will be tough for him I know and maybe I'll still have him play but it's back to the cheaper sets for a day or 2.

Tonight I will step up to the plate. That's the nice thing about having us both there.

And I have been getting some nice offers to play.

2 men a van and the road..............

A day wasted........

Well it's 10:00 PM and we're still getting going. Zack is still beat and the action has probably gave up waiting at the poolhall.

this is what happens when you play so long with no sleep.

1 You make no money because you can't take it down.

2 Your so beat you need to sleep way into the next day and night and waste another day.

3 You still have all the expences $150 per day at least and no chance to get that time back.

4 It really did you no good to play bad because they all knew at the poolhall that you were exhausted.

5 Even though you feel kind of good you need to be careful even the next day because your still really not all rejuvenated.

All in all if your on the road and get that tired you need to pull up the horse and rest. Not only are you liable to shoot bad but you will make bad decisions.

I'll bet if zack wasn't so tired when he went to talk to Justin they might have been able to work out a game?

When your tired even your negotiation skills are weak.

Going to be a short night tonight. Just need to go down and try to make expenses.

I don't like the sound of where this is going. Is his opponent managing more sleep? I don't know what to say.

Bottom line is........

I don't like the sound of where this is going. Is his opponent managing more sleep? I don't know what to say.

Don't play if you don't get the sleep.

serves no purpose at all if your on the road.

Up up and away to Big Dogs to see if there are any scraps left tonight.

Might be a good time for a tuneup with Perfect Aim for Zack........

That for sure is a positive.........

Force this man to sleep. Take his food, take his money. Unless he is playing pool for 20 hours out of the day, then there is ample time for sleep. The road does not have time for excuses!

Good night and morning at the Poolhall.

We got down to Big Dogs pretty late. It was about 10:00.

There was Jimmy waiting for action and there was Mike, the guy that Zack played the day before with not enough sleep.

I feel pretty good so I told Zack that i would play Jimmy some cheap sets for $100 and he could play some $50 one pocket with Mike. Zach got about 9 hours of sleep but still doesn't feel like himself. I'm sure he will play just fine though.

I win 3 sets from Jimmy and at that time, about 3:00AM zach was ahead of Mike 3 games.

I left the poolhall to go work out but before I left I had a little pep talk with Zach. It was a vital part of building his game up to the next level.

I noticed he is doing allot of kidding around with whoever he plays. Zach is a real nice kid and this is just a part of who he is.

I told him that he has to get down to business and focus only on the task at hand. While we're playing we need to practice our focus as well as our playing. We can distract ourselves by striking up conversations with the other player or people around us.

We need to focus on getting the job done. See how much the other person is going to lose. The only way to find out is to win. That's what we're there for?

If your in a tournament you don't want it to stay even or go back and forth. Practice your focus and practice doing everything you can to get ahead.

There are 2 types of focus. Tired and not tired. We need to practice focusing both ways because at certain times we need to play both ways.

Bottom line though is there is plenty of distractions already without distracting ourselves.

You can do all the socializing after the match is over. But while your at it take care of business.

For the average player this advice doesn't matter. Playing league and socializing having a few drinks. And that is a big part of pool leagues. Socializing and having a good time.

But on the road you have to get it done.

Zack has come a long way in 3 weeks and this is something he needs to start working on right away.

It's 7:30AM right now. I'm going to run a sandwich down to the poolhall.

Got to feed my horse.

This is still by far the best ongoing thread on this board! I love reading the updates daily. Keep that kid's head straight and I think you'll both go places!

best,

Justin

I agree

I look forward to it as well. Did Zack learn how to read a tournament board yet? So no one misses their matches?

Agreed

Completely agree, and think it would make a great documentary, but I've said that before.

Gene, you may want to try and get Zach to drink coffee instead of the energy drinks. At the very least it's cheaper and actually has some health benefits. He can even do the instant Starbucks coffee which is stronger than most energy drinks and still cheaper. If he's going to kick the energy drinks then he needs to come down slowly or be hit by withdrawal headaches that may also impact his game.

I love hearing y'all's stories. Keep it up.

I agree with kicking the energy drinks. Coffee is good for me. I have been known to drink a LOT of coffee when I get tired and it doesn't seem to make me nervous. I don't know why that is so. If Zack doesn't like the taste of it, add sugar and milk until it tastes good to him.

What, is Zach preparing to become the Princess of Pool? What does it matter if he likes the taste? He is crossing the country to make money, not live the life of Lindsay Lohan.

Each day he ends up losing money, he doesn't get to eat for the next 24 hours. Now you will start seeing some improvements. Withdrawal headaches? How can you ever expect him to succeed if he is bothered by every slight pain of the body? If you continue on this path he will always have an excuse! Oh, I was a little tired. My drink didn't taste good enough. I was too hungry. The road isn't interested in your excuses!

I don't know about Zach, but some of my best play comes when I'm relaxed. That means I'm bs'ing with my opponent, chatting with whoever's around, etc. I intentionally try to get away from people when I'm not playing that well - I want to grumble and think about what I'm doing wrong.

Not everybody plays the same way and you probably know that. Have you considered it may be doing a disservice to change his style? Some play great when left alone, some don't. Maybe it's that you're upset that he isn't coming off as taking it as seriously as you want him to?

If you watch most pros play they don't have any type of conversation going on. Their focus is totally on what they are doing.

I watch Zach talking to someone and getting up and shooting without doing what he needs to do to make the shot and get the shape he needs.

Any break from a routine that works very well is disaster when we shoot a shot. Especially in a pressure situation.

If your mind is someplace else it isn't focused on the task at hand.

I've watched this kid play now for about a month on the road.

When he sticks to business and focuses on the game he plays pretty good.

When he is in the conversation mode between turns he gets up and just doesn't get it done more often.

In the poolhall there are many distractions. But the biggest one you can totally avoid is yourself.

Cut this one out and your already way ahead of the game.

Got to see how this one plays out?

Zack shows up at the room at around 12:00 noon.

He won $300 but decided to take a custom cue instead of the $300.

we really needed another cue?

Then he's had no sleep and Mike had no sleep. He's going with them to Davanport for a team tournament to win some big money.

Ya right. There will be allot of good teams there and they got sleep.

He asked me if i wanted to play on the team. I think my silence was answer enough.

I hope he makes some money but that's not very probable. Going there with no sleep will be tough to beat anyone let alone help win the tournament.

Bad news is when he comes back here Sunday or whenever he's going to be all wore out. We've all been to these tournaments. They can be pretty wearing.

For a few days it will be one man a van and the road....
