Why do people in the pool hall come up to you and want to play you but want weight?

Meaning, you are in the pool hall and someone walks up to you and says I want to play you, but I need the 7 and out, playing 9 ball. Or walk up to you and say I want to play you some One Pocket, but I need 13/5? If I ask for a game from a pool player I do not ask for weight! Now on the other hand if I ask you to play me then I can understand you asking for weight. You did not come to me to ask to play me. My point here is if I ask you to play me, I don't think I need or want any weight. What happen to playing even? At least until you find out how the match goes! Then perhaps you can adjust the game.

I don't understand it either. I say you have clocked me and I don't know you at all. I say let's play 20 games at 50 a game and see where we stand then we can adjust from there in either direction.

Mr. JB,
I have put my time in and my hard everyday practice. I have paid my dues. Now you do the same and your game should be good enough for you to play even or at least not ask for the world in the game and on the pool table. I use to lose my socks and clothes trying to beat a guy while I was learning to play pool. Every Friday I brought him my after school job money I had made for the week. As soon as I got good enough to beat him he would not play me any more. Sad story but so true!

I'm so confused.

If I ask for weight, I'm a nit.
So I don't ask for weight, but then I go broke.
So I have to bet less to not go broke.
But playing cheap means I have no gamble.

I'm beginning to think that the only way to not be a nit is to be the best player around.

It would at least help to be a better player so you do not have to go broke!
Put your time in and pay your dues and you will get better at the game of pool. Lots of practice will help you a lot. I started out getting my back side beat up on often. When I got tired of it I put an end to it.
One solid hour a day of hitting balls and running a few balls will do wonders for your game!

I don't have an issue with people asking for weight but I sometimes have issue with their response if I say no. I think it is classless and really disrespectful for weaker players to talk shit and make it seem like I am such a bad guy or scared when I don't want to give them what I view as the nuts. It is sick how nowadays weaker players will jump up ask for a bunch of weight and then call you scared and trash talk. When I started playing, the weaker players didn't talk shit to the better players and ask for a big spot on top of it. There is no respect in poolrooms though and I accept that.

Hello Mike,
That is exactly what I am talking about. They the B/C player wants to make you look bad and talk trash about you not wanting to play them! You should be able to say no to a game you do not like without being talked about bad! Good post.

I dot remember his name...

Thought better of leaving this post up... :)

Hello Banks,
I do match if possible to do so. My point was and still is if a guy is looking for you all over the place and leaving messages for you, that he wants to play you and then when you see him the first thing out of his mouth is I will take the 5 and the break! Is that nice or not? He had people thinking I was ducking him and scared to play him. I would not give him the weight he asked for so we did not play. Next thing out of his mouth is that I am scared to play him. I offered him the 7 and out no break and he did not want it.

Now about the threads about how you would play somebody, I wanted to know how people would like to match up playing the players in the thread that I am talking about them matching up with. After Scott Frost gave up 17/4 anything is possible. Just finding out how people like to match up with people that play great pool is all.

To me this added information about the person going around talking smack afterward completely changes my attitude about what would be appropriate.
The first post led me to think you wanted to play weak players even and that you were offended when they asked for a spot.
I didn't understand this thought process, because for someone who is a good player, and wants to gamble, getting people to want to play you in any fashion is half the battle.
Now with the added information, I understand your feelings on the matter.
The reality as you already know, is that most people who talk like that are not going to play {unlesss you give them what they consider the "nuts"} and then they usually want to play cheap so they can make sure they haven't overloaded.
You have abilities they will never posess, be thankful , as I imagine you are, and rest assured that anyones opinion you would value, knows the real score.
Hopefully , the person or persons who do this will read this post and recognise their jealousy and change.

Book Collector,
You said a big mouthful and I mean that all the way. You put it where all could understand it with no problem! I like what you said too. Thanks.

My retort, if you want someting, am I able to get something in return or is everything just your way, then don't say a word....you'll get a response of somekind. If they say something ridiculous, say fine if I get 3-1 on the money Post 3 games. Allot of times they are just throwing out line, like a fisherman, seeing whats biting, all fair in pool and love eh?

Great, now I have to notice each time the behavior comes up in the poolroom, lol. I got to the poolroom to get loose and some guy from Pennsylvania comes over and asks for the last 4. I say no and...viola.... I am a coward. Later, a few guys are bickering and I look over. One guy snaps at me and yells "give me the right spot and I'll play you too, I ain't scared." This pool thing really has it's characters. Amazing how so many of them made it this far along in life. I don't see them ever coming to reason. We are just stuck in a model that rewards bullies and almost discourages playing better. I am sure it has been like that for a long time. Just now, there are fewer gamblers around to drown out the bad action types. Not saying asking for weight is bad, just some of them.

Yeah Mike,
they try to make you look like the bad guy! You don't even have to open your mouth. Strange things happen in the pool hall!

So...you've never asked for a spot. Fair enough. Don't worry, I play a little more than an hour a day.

I've asked for weight, been asked, and given it. I've never asked for an outrageous spot, I only wanted a fair game. I've never liked giving my money away. Seems today that everyone wants a lock, doesn't matter if the game is fair or not.

I grew up playing even and getting my a** kicked but I kept on playing.
It's part of what seasons and toughens you up. Every match is a learning experience.

I used to play the best players in the room $2.00 nine ball. Doesn't sound like much now but back in the day and considering I was a teenager it was a big deal to drop $50.00

Those players knew they would beat me and had nothing else to do and I was willing to drop some money so I could match up and watch them shoot. In reality it was the cheapest lessons I ever got.

Then when I was flat broke I'd get on my bike, go mow a few lawns, pick up aluminum cans, hustle my friends playing cutthroat and as soon as I had enough money I would head back to the pool hall.

When I had no money I would ride my bike 8 miles to a little room and the owner lady would let me brush the tables for free table time. I practically lived there. My mom would call and tell me to come home so I would ride my bike 8 miles back home.

One of the most satisfying nights of my life was when I went in a bar when I was in my 20's and ran into a guy that used to relieve me of every last dollar I had. We matched up and his jelly roll soon became my jelly roll. His comment "I can't play you anymore"

I grew up getting a spot, grew into playing even, then to spotting.

Now that I think about it, that Bubba Campbell told me I had the 7 for life. Anybody know where he is these days?

One can't deny that being open to handicapping increases the pool opponent pool.

I am not opposed to the spot. I have given spots and a few times received a spot. Money is money but coming up I wanted to beat the best playing even. It was just my mindset back then.
