Really looks like Jimmy Lawless.

... and raised and learn to play in Oh.

This is just wrong.

While he is true he was born in California, BEFORE he moved out to Ohio and started hanging with Dee, he was a raised in the burbs of Philly.
He didn't head out to Ohio till later.

It's kind of funny how much different 70 miles is in Philly vs say Houston.

70 miles is across town in Houston but in Philly 70 miles is no where near...

made me chuckle

Allentown is nowhere near Philadelphia, perhaps 70 miles away.

Mizerak came from Perth Amboy, NJ, about 75 miles from Philadelphia, but only a half hour drive from NYC.

Hopkins came from Cranford, NJ, over 80 miles from Philadelphia, but only about 20-25 miles from NYC.

He moved in with Dee's family in Ohio when he was 14. He could play good when he came here, but trust me, Ohio is where he became a champion.

Um.
You need to adjust your timeline.
He didn't start playing pool till he was 13 or 14. It wasn't till a couple of years later that he started going to Ohio.
He actually shuttled back and forth, leaving for months at a time, and hanging out with Dee, before coming back home, and heading off to other places like Texas, Hawaii, and Florida, etc.

Sure, he lived with Dee while he was out there, but it wasn't till later that he settled out there for good.

But for someone to completely eliminate Philly and its influences such as Jimmy Caras on the boy's upbringing, is just totally wrong.

This part is a little off.

The first time I played corey was at Pete Sinklers room at a tounament. I was 15 and Corey was 12 and he could already play a little. He did start late though compared to some as did I. Think we had both only been playing for a year and a half or so at this point.

Second time I played Corey we gambled and it was in a room somewhere just outside of philly. We were there looking for action and I got a call at the poolroom and it was Corey looking to play.

I was around 17 or 18 then and he was around 15 or 16. By this time he was basically just short of champion speed.

Agreed you def can't forget his Philly roots.

He did not start playing pool at 10 1/2 or 11 to make him be able to play a little by 12.
If anything, he WAS small, for a long time before he finally sprouted.
Everyone got his age wrong.
Everyone.

He might have started several months before we played. I had only been playing for a little over a year at the time. Young good players get good fast.

I know for a fact how old I was the first time I played him though. I turned 37 in October and Was 15 then.I thought he was 3 years younger. How old is Corey now and do the math.

He turned 35 in November.
I'm telling you, people got his age wrong all the time cause he was small.

Heck, even wiki has the age he started playing.

awesome to watch play Harry and Corey

Harry Petros from Overbrook Park

He was a icon in his day shame how it ended!
Watched Petros gamble he was a childhood memory of how good a person can play pool!
Corey according to firsthand acct played and was coached by Jimmy caras and Bob Maidhof trophy and young corey photo on display in Drexeline!
He still is best of friends with Bob M and stays at his home when in area sometimes; a bunch of history between them!
corey comes to drexeline to spend time with his friends there when he is in town and is very nice guy who will show ya stuff !

Just to let ya in on how good a stroke he has?
September passing thru area !
I watched him set up cueball in corner pocket, put object ball in opposite far corner pocket, and using a jacked up house cue drew the cueball back 2 rails .
now that is a stroke!
dont believe it, his drexeline buddies were recording it on their cell phone!

I'm not discounting anything about Philly or Caras' influence on him.... But I've known Cory since 93, know for a fact that he was living Wait.... I'll just text Dee.... Wait for it. Wait. Wait. Dee says 13. Guess we were both wrong, but imagine that, I'm more right.

I'll just text Corey and see what he has to say.:D

But you are way off if you think he was actually living with Dee when he was 13.
And if Dee is saying he was living with him at 13, that's just a bunch of garbage.

Especially to someone like myself, who was in the pool room the first time Corey's mom brought him there, and has known him ever since.

Who along with others, picked his ass up at home, and brought him to the pool room when he didn't have a ride, who dropped his ass off at his high school after being at South Philly Billiards gambling all night long, who picked him up to go to all the local tournaments, and carted his ass to all things pool.

I personally don't think Dee would put out garbage like the living with him at 13 tidbit, knowing that it's untrue.

But it's easy to see how others might want to, and just say that's what Dee said.

You guys are arguing over minutiae. LOL. Its clear SS was THERE in Philly when Corey first started playing, and knew him personally. That's first hand info, not hearsay. No offense to Dee or Saw, but I wouldn't consider a text 20 yrs later as proof of how old he was. lol. Things are easily "forgotten" in 20 yrs.

Anyway, Corey clearly got his start in the Philly rooms, and was near championship caliber when he branched out. I remember reading an article about him where he said for the first few years of his career, he tried to copy Caras exactly. The article said he later developed his own style.

I played out of the same room Corey did in the Philly burbs, Drexeline Billiards. Unfortunately, I started in 95 or 96, when he was already gone, so I never met him till years later. But his early trophies and such are still there. Same thing with some other rooms in the area, including Pete Sinkler's former room.
