Not sure about his 1p game either, but his 9b one had a bit of dog in it...right there at the end.

That's Billy Lanna (90%), originally i believe from Rhode Island. I did see him however in Philly. He was maybe 16 and he was barking at Joe Veasey who had to be 70+at the time. It was a 2 day road trip.

I believe once he got there fairly young, Corey stayed in Philly til age 15. Could be wrong

You guys are arguing over minutiae. LOL. Its clear SS was THERE in Philly when Corey first started playing, and knew him personally. That's first hand info, not hearsay. No offense to Dee or Saw, but I wouldn't consider a text 20 yrs later as proof of how old he was. lol. Things are easily "forgotten" in 20 yrs.

I started playing in 92 and Cory (15 yo) was living with Dee's mom and dad then and lived there or with Dee's brother until Cory bought his own house at around 23 or 24. That's why you see Cory's hometown listed as West Jefferson, Ohio everywhere....

Corey is from Rutledge PA.
He was not living with Dee when he was 13.

It's that simple.

You really think Corey was going to hit the road at 13 or that his mom would let him at that age?
Heck, he hadn't even dropped out of high school yet.
He didn't even know that he had a serious talent for pool yet, but according to you, at 13 he was already good enough to hit the road and had already settled in Ohio permanently?
No.
It doesn't work like that.

Wasn't till later, after shuttling back and forth, that he transplanted permanently.:D

Believe me, at 15, he was still living at home, and we were still carting his ass all over.
This included taking him to the airport and bus stations to travel to other places.
But even the newspaper back then knew where he lived.

I mean, if he was living in Ohio permanently since the age of 13, i wonder how he knew exactly when to come visit to get his picture in the newspaper and how they listed his hometown as Rutledge, instead of West Jefferson.

Tom Golly won the NCAA 14.1 national championship while at Penn State. Used to watch him and Corn Flakes play some pretty awesome matches at Fusco's Family Billiards in Somerton in the early 90's. Also Jimmy Matz was the smoothest 9 ball player I have ever watched. He, however, had some bigger problems.

Response to best Philly players

When I was a kid growing up in AC I bore witness to a ton of great hustlers who would float down to the shore to hustle at a little four-table room run by Frank Morrati. Located on Mississippi Avenue across from the still standing St. Michaels Church, this place was the mecca for action in the mid to late fifties.

Peter Rabbit would rob me of what little money I had making games that looked like a lead-pipe cinch for me. What an education. Some of the most creative games were between Nicky Vach of Philly (not sure of the spelling of his last name) and Bridgeton Herby. Vach reminded me of Al Pacino and BH of an exuberant Denzel Washington.

Now BH was no slouch, but Nicky would stick up BH in one pocket where Vach would play him something like 10-2. The catch was BH had to play with just his shaft. After multiple robberies, BH had a shaft weighted w/lead. Needless to say, he recovered a lot of his money. BH would play guys even where he would line up every shot then have an observer come and hold an unfolded newspaper page covering his line of sight. Then he would pull the trigger, seldom missing.

I remember this player (?name) from Philly who would work in the summer as a waiter at the 500 Club. He often beat local great Snooks Pearlstein in straight pool. Loved to watch those intense matches.

God forbid if someone walked in the line of a shooter down on a ball. Today there is so little etiquette exercised or taught. I really think owners and their employees have a responsibility to teach unaware customers of all ages when they see it happen. They're quick to tell customers not to sit on tables or place drinks on the rails without fear of losing them as customers. If done in a polite and educational way, everyone who plays in that room benefits.

Sorry to get a bit off topic, but this has always been a passionate topic for me probably reflecting my AC roots. Thanks for listening.

I watched Russian Kenny lose 14 straight back pocket $100 per to Vinny Simonelli

OK, how can you mention bonafide world beaters in the first post, and in the second, two bums? :)

Note, I use the word bum affectionately. But those two are like B+ players, not even in the same universe as the ohters mentioned.

If you took the time to read some of the previous threads you would note that some idiot had indicated that Russian Kenny was one of the best in Philly. My post was to make a counter opinion that he is at best an A player with a lot of gamble.

Hmmmm.... Why is it that Cory lists his hometown as West Jeff and not Rutledge, PA??? I'll tell you why. When he goes home, he goes to Dee's mom's house in West Jeff... Last I knew, his mail still goes there.

If the post you refer to is #29, I have it under very good authority that the author was being extremely sarcastic.

If its another post, then the author might not be an idiot, just very naive in pool to think Kenny [or Vinny] is a top player. They will eventually learn, as we all do. I remember a time when a new player thought "I" was the best player in the room. Wow, was he clueless, lol. If only he was correct...

It's kind of funny how much different 70 miles is in Philly vs say Houston.

70 miles is across town in Houston but in Philly 70 miles is no where near...

made me chuckle

Where I grew up, 70 miles would have hit 5 different States. (Edit: Okay, 4 states, but Rhode Island was about 90 miles away).

Yeah, and when I read it the first time way back when, I knew it was crap then too.:D. SO DID EVYONE FROM THE ROOM!!!

"MUST HAVE BEEN 12 YEARS OLD"?!?!" HAHAHAHA!
He hadn't even walked into the pool room at 12. Let alone gone to any tournaments to be seen by anyone or been good enough to actually impress anyone.
Drexeline Billiards didn't even OPEN till the spring of 1989, and Corey would have been 11 at the time of it opening. He wouldn't have been 12 till that fall.
Believe me, he WASN'T there on day 1. His mom didn't bring him there till years later.

Who knows. Maybe the Ohio guys wanted to adopt "the legend" of Corey Deuel for themselves.

I mean, seriously. Take a good long look at the newspaper clipping photo.
How old do YOU thinks he looks there?
Cause if he looked like that at 15...:rolleyes:LOL.
But let's not let distortions be accepted as fact, cause the part about his age in the story, is just a total load of bull. A huge pile of it.

So basically what is being said in the article is that he never went to high school in PA.
HAHA.
I dunno about Ohio, but the minimum age someone can drop out of school in the state of PA, is 16 and that's WITH a parents signature.
So what that article is basically saying, is that, he was allowed special circumstances to drop out of school, and to leave his moms side, to be adopted by Dee's family.
At 13 no less. BECAUSE OF POOL.

Do you have any idea exactly how ridiculous that sounds?
Especially since he hadn't even picked up a cue at that age?

I mean, based on your responses, I can gather that Ohio likes to claim him for their own.
That's fine and dandy, but distortions of the truth are still distortions.

Did Corey eventually leave and transplant to Ohio? Yes. Believe me, no one is disputing that.
But to say that he did it at 13, is one of the biggest distortions there is.
It's easy to understand why people might think he was younger. People took one look at him and got his age wrong all the time.
He didn't sprouts till like 16, and before that, he was SMALL.
But for someone like Dee to say that is just a total embellishment and distortion of the truth. Why? Only Dee can answer that.

ANYONE who knew Corey from when he started playing pool can call bull on the age in the story.
Heck, anyone with any math skills can call bull.

But that's ok.
I'm not trying to change your mind.
You keep on believing what you want to believe. Doesn't stop it from being totally 100% wrong.:D
