What's a great hard tip that will hold shape and not miscue?

I've tried triangle tips, they were ok, than moori
Med hard which seem to lose their shape quick and
Had some issues with miscues. I use a dime curvature
As I like to use English. Would a water buffalo suit me?

I don't have an exact answer to your question & we could start an argument if I go into detail but Elk Masters are 'impregnated' with chalk but they are soft. They've worked fine for me & are cheap. I believe they are still less then 50 cents. I am also using Kamui SS that I like too.

Someone on AZB sells 'milk duds' which I believe are Elk Masters soaked in milk etc. & then pressed to make them harder & last longer. I have read that they work well.

Sorry, I don't really like a hard tip.

Do try the Ultra´s from Tom, great tips. Many of my 3c friends use them and they just love them, and they are pretty tough when it comes to tips. They usually buy, H or HH.

I am currently testing both Kamuii brown soft and black medium. Both hold their shape very well. I have used dozens of different tips over the years. I normally prefer a hard tip due to it holding it's shape. Both of these tips of held up very well!

$30 is for the birds though. Absolutely unjusitifed! In my opinion of course! lol

These are on my list as well. Looks like a good tip at a better price than Kamuii.

A brown WB is a very good hard tip.
I currently break with 1 on my Lucasi.
I have some of the Ultra-Skins, I haven't installed 1 yet.
Hope this helps,

Here's a perspective from an instructor, since you posted this in the "Ask an Instructor" forum. Miscues happen 90+% of the time due to a poor stroke...not which tip you use. Hard or soft tips don't make any difference, if your stroke is inconsistent. With a repeatable stroke you will get great action regardless what tip you use. Tips are VERY subjective to the individual, so referrals from someone else may or may not work for you. If you work on the quality and repeatability of your stroke, you won't need to change what kind of tip you have. Any of them will work well...although you may one or two kinds that you seem to prefer.

Have you tried pressing a Triangle tip? Or Triangle duds? I press my triangles and love them.

Tiger Sniper. I rough mine up occasionally with a cuetec bowtie. It hold shape and chalk very well. No matter how hard I nail the cb, no mis shapes. As Scott Lee said there will be miscues but stroke related. I prefer a nickle shape but don't see why the sniper can't hold it.

Good luck.

I've been using a hard LePro for a few decades now. Nickel shaped, never have to re-shape them. Just make sure you chalk after every shot. Zero maintenance with the hard ones. They only get worn down by chalking them, and they stay consistent from new tip to old tip.

Mr. Neil,

Other than low maintainance, are there reasons why you prefer a hard tip?

I have always preferred soft tips & I have my 'opinionated' reasons.

I was just wondering, from your experiance, why do you prefer hard tips?

I break with a water buffalo and I haven't replaced it in forever. I don't recall miscuing with it either.

I'm not crazy about playing with hard tips but if you like them I think the water buffalo should play okay.

I only play with hard tips, I know there are lots of people out there that say things like "with a soft tip you can put more english or spin on the ball" or "you will miscue less", I honestly disagree with those people, you might be a little more prone to miscue with a hard tip if you forget to chalk on every shot then hard tips hold chalk less than soft tips. If you have a good stroke like it was said before you shouldnt have a problem. Now, the real reason why we have so many options, its "feel", and I love the solid hit/sound of a hard tip, its like music to my ears. Ive tried pretty much every hard tip out there, I ended up sticking with a kamui black hard for quite sometime, it holds its shape pretty good and its pretty hard, the only con I noticed with those tips is that they glace over fairly quick so I have to run 150 sand paper to scruff them, about two months ago I got a new predator cue and I decided to try the new predator hard tip and so far this particular tip on this shaft I have to say its the best hard tip Ive ever had, I have not had to shape it, or scruff it or anything, and I break with my own cue a lot.

Also you have to consider that even if you get the same brand and type of tips not all tips are gonna play the same, the new layered tips and brands like kamui have made tips quite a bit more consistent but still you are gonna get a tip with a different feel once in a while, thats why Im gonna be so sad when I have to replace this predator tip on my playing cue.

I've been playing with a Kamui SS for nearly 6 months & it too has held up very well. It seems to glaze over a bit quickly but still does not miscue. A very light priking gets it holding chalk very well.

I looked for Predator tips on their web site but I didn't see where they make their own tips. As far as I've known, they put Tiger tips as standard on their cues. I believe you can ask for another brand if you order it custom.

Isn't it important to know what kind of tip is on your cue before you recommend it?

How about trying to good or looking here in the forum "predator victory tips" that's the name of the tip MADE by predator, they are very new so maybe they haven't updated the site, you can buy them in pool dawg or seyberts.com. Also, they usually put Everest tips standard on their cues.

I know very well my equipment by doing research and playing extensively with it, otherwise I wouldn't recommend it.
