Proposed TAR matchup: SVB vs. C.J.

They're still considered two of the best American players (Archer more so than Strickland) because of their recent achievements, not what their game was like 25 years ago.

More to the point, Archer and Strickland have remained active since their heydays...the others all took signficant time off from pool. It kinda of shows how good players from that era really were, in comparison to today's pros (not really fair, since SVB still has a lot of time to show what he'll be like in 20 years). It would still rock, though; and I wouldn't be so quick to count any of them out, especially in a ring game format. You gotta believe they would work to get themselves into some sort of competitive shape, especially if they knew all us bangers would be glued to our computer screens to see it!

Though it would be entertaining to some, I think there's too much luck in ring games. A guy can be standing on the sidelines for an hour before he gets a shot. :embarrassed2:

But I'm looking at the prospect of a ring game maybe differently than a spectator would. For the player, no matter how good you shoot, you do need luck to win in the ring game sometimes. You have to still be strong, but there is that luck factor that is there, more so than one against one.

Maybe a mini King of the Hill tournament with one-on-one matches would suffice.

[sarcasm] I can't find the sarcasm button in my text editor  how did you do that ?[/sarcasm]

LOL.

I use the sarcasm brackets because it is hard to sense it in type. If I didnt use them some people here would have probably thought I was serious.

Seriously put Shane on a gold crown with those Hugh pockets they had in the 80's and early 90's playing nine ball, it would be sick!

Somebody send me this recently, and it reminds me of some of the posts in thread: :D

Old Guard: If you got drunk off duty, your buddies would take you back to the ship so you could sleep it off.
New Guard: If you get drunk off duty, they slap you in rehab and ruin your career.

Old Guard: You slept in a barracks, like a soldier, sailor, or marine.
New Guard: You sleep in a dormitory, like a college kid.

Old Guard: If you wanted a quart of beer and conversation, you could go to the NCO or Officers' Club.
New Guard: The beer will cost you two dollars and someone is watching to see how much you drink.

Old Guard: If you wanted to relax, you went to the club, played pool, smoked, and drank beer.
New Guard: You go to the community center and can still play pool, maybe.

Your right, if SVB was 21 in '75 no one would have ever heard of Earl, or Sigel, or Varner or Hall or Rempe ... Johnny would have been the runner-up player of the decade and still be under review for the HOF..

Parica would have gone back home and told Efren "Don't go.. it's to hard.. you can't win.." There would have been a move to bar him from tournaments because of unfair competitive advantage... no one back then would have had the heart to gamble with him... (of course he may have refused to play because Sigel or Keith kept blowing smoke in is face...)

Unfortunately he would be about 59 now and someone on the "inter-web" would be talking about some shot maker with a big break and saying how SVB (the 59 year old version) would not stand a chance against the new guy on new equipment.. Even though he had beat the "new guy" on tight equipment, in a long race (it was rigid to take away his break... it wasn't that he was out played or anything)... but this new guy OH MAN just look at him go..

Just a side note, SVB has never beat Archer for the cash but Earl has

Shane beat Johnny in the finals of the Reno Open in 2007.

Other then the last TAR match, has Shane and Johnny matched up outside of a tournament before?

Not that I know of, Archer is hard to match up with- term wise
I don't think Archer would play Shane on a standard diamond

No idea if CJ can still hit balls like he used to, but I'd shell out to watch this match anyway.

I guess it's an example of how the right buildup and marketing will sell a match and it's not always about who is the straightest shooter in the universe. If CJ never joined the forums, I'd say "shane's playing who?" and probably not buy. But having seen some of CJ's colorful posts and the forum drama surrounding him and his system, now I'm ready to pay just to see if his shotmaking/position/whatever lives up to the hype.

It'd be pretty interesting if either of them gets demolished, that'd stir up the forums.
