Modern Day Begging

Hi guys I would like to test the waters on a matter that is a little delicate. As you guys well know/ don't know I am a college student at Indiana University and I have been trying really hard to qualify for the national ACUI tournament. ACUI (Association of Collegiate Union International) has a 9 ball tournament in every region of the country. We are part of region 9 which is very competitive. It includes Indiana, Illinois, Ohio, Kentucky, and Michigan. All colleges in this area can send players to the regional tournament and the top 4 people qualify for the national tournament in the summer. The tournament is usually very hard because there are very good players in this region especially from Purdue and Michigan University. Well for the first time in actually qualified for the nationals. I have been training really hard and I had a spark of genius and qualified. The nationals are going to be in the summer but we don’t know yet where. Here where the begging part begins. Our school (IU) due to whatever BS budget cuts decided to take away all our funding (4k a year) so the club cannot support my trip to this tournament to represent my school. Last year I tagged along with my best friend Brian Myung to the national tournament because he qualified as well in our region and the total cost for him was around 600$ (hotel for 3 days, registration fee 120$ and so forth). What I am getting at, is to see if I can get any sponsors/backers. I work 2 jobs and go to school; I volunteer quite a bit in the community, manage a successful billiards club at IU and teach pool as much as possible. I am not a free loader and I am working really hard saving money for this trip but between books, rent, gas and other stuff I don’t think it will be enough. I started a cue repair business before Christmas but lately it has been very slow because I already changed pretty much all tips in town and they are not popping off (like the gum commercial , chew another piece!!!!!). I also have my friends and family supporting me and the local bars where I play apa and bca. Anything helps. GOOOOOOO HOOSIERS!!!!
I want to give back for all the people that want to support me so I am offering my lathe services for free. I can do tips, ferules, cleanings, stack leather wrap and so on. I can’t taper, can’t build anything, I can make joint protectors etc. All I ask is for the supplies, help me as much/little as you want and I will fix your cue for the cost of the materials, labor will be free.

Best Regards
A

just an idea

It sounds as though you have a good community and many supporters.

Hold a fundraising tournament. Each player pays something like $20 for entry fees, and you take half of each entry fee. This way people are paying to support you and to get together and have fun for a day. See if a room/ bar/ school will donate the table time. And anyone who finishes in the money just gets half of what they normally would.

Or you could keep all of the entry fee money and offer gift certificates, school logo t-shirts, baked goods- all sorts of things for the prizes.

Probably not a good idea to play in your own fund raising tourney, though- just concentrate on thanking everyone, socializiong, and making sure the tourney runs smoothly.

These are all great ideas an I was thinking about a dud raiser tourney and my local pub. You see I play in 3 places. The university has a nice pool room 10 tables Simons cloth that I play for free due to a agreement with the club and Steve's place a local bar that I play apa and bca.

Here are the pictures of a stack leather wrap I did. This was my second one. It was done on my Coker.

You sound like a good egg. Can we get a name? And is there a cash prize for the ACUI if you win?

I have no doubt you'll pull this off. I hope you do well at nationals. It ain't a walk in the park as I'm sure you know.
There are several web sites/serivces that you can use to donate (besides PayPal). Set something up and let us know. I like the ones that have a goal that must be reached before the pledges become donations.
I'm in to help a little.

CreeDo...There are no cash prizes in either BEF junior nationals, or ACUI nationals. Scholarships are given for the top men and women players.

To the OP...Here's what I helped a junior player do, years ago, to raise funds to travel to the national tournament. I had him write up an article about who he was, his interest in the sport, how his grades were in school (it matters), and what he had to offer to potential sponsors. We suggested nominal cash donations ($25-$50), and offered to silkscreen each sponsors logo on the back of a shirt that would be worn for the duration of the tournament. In addition we submitted a story to the local newspaper (with pictures), with all of the sponsors listed, which they published. We followed up with another article, describing the event, thanking the sponsors for helping him to get there. People love to see their names in the local paper. You might generate additional publicity through local radio and/or tv. Good luck with your project. BTW...not all schools in a region can participate, and send players to the regional ACUI tournament...only schools that belong to the ACUI organization. Also, schools have been cutting funding for ACUI events for many years now...it's nothing new, sad to say.

Wow the responses have been overwhelming and I really can't thank people enough for their ideas and contributions. I will open a crowd sourcing page where people can help out. I have not yet chosen a page since I am very new to this and I have never asked for help before.

I will choose a web page tomorrow since I have a exam tomorrow and I have to go to sleep now.

I will keep everyone posted.
Donations can also be made to my PayPal address - apopa@indiana.edu

What is your major?

Usually asking for hand outs and demanding free advice in the Machinery Forum.

Again, you're looking for an easy way out. Hold a raffle, do something other than beg others for free money.

Just because people donate to our AZ Horse, Robley, doesn't mean that every time someone needs to go to a tournament, AZ members will chip in and send someone.

Well, at least he is over here pesting the Main Forum instead of pulling his usual MO in the Mach Section.

Ya'll got some fancy playing cues for a student. Sell one of them.

I am very new to this and I have never asked for help before.

Cough, cough, BS. Youse guys gonna get jizzed in the butt real good.

He pretty much wore his welcome out over in the Mach forum just so you know.

Had a talk with Andrei today.
Actually, he wasn't aware of Robley's case until I told him about it.

As a college student too, I too don't have it easy, but I do agree with you Blue Hog, that Andrei could have done something else to raise the money. In fact, I really wanted to help Rob so I sent in 50. That's why he's at 525 now :)))

Nonetheless, I am just saying that maybe you misunderstood Andrei's honest mistake here, as he was really unaware of Robley's case. Just my 2 cents worth.

No mistake here. He is a professional Bum.
Like I said, he wore his welcome out in the Mach Section already.

Mainly because of his crap attitude for one.

But hey, don't let me stop you guys from sending him your money.

Example. After all the free and discounted supplies he received from other AZ members, he tried selling an 8 dollar spool of nylon wrap to a member for 20 bucks.

Theres gratitude for ya.

Me, I wouldn't be bothered sending him a couple of sheets of toilette paper if he paid for the stamp and envelope. Waste of ink to address the envelope.

I see that you posted the exact same thread in the Mach Forum too.

No responses in that one. Like I mentioned, people are on to you already.

Your right that part of the country does have...allot of good players. 1968 played Nick Varner there in the collegiate 14.1finals. The gold crowns were right next to the bowling lanes, literally 15-20 ft. away, no walls, all open.

Well not much changed

We currentley have 10 tables at the union. They are not gold crown tho. I actually have no clue what they are but they have been there for at least 30 years if i am correct. I believe they are a brand called victory or century. They are decent although the school could have upgraded them considering how much tuition is. The club is doing good and the team is doing even better because our current president is a very good coach and player in general. But not a lot of college students like to play competitive, they mess around but not competitive.

I myself donated OVER $100 worth of tips to him............ when he FIRST started asking for favors months ago to do some testing on different tips. And then like Terry mentioned, he tried SELLING some nylon wrap for double what it was worth instead of paying it forward and donating it to someone else. What comes around goes around......

Scam artists are everywhere. The interent is full of them, sounds like we have another here.

Excuse you...... 100$ worth of tips. I did not know that 5 tips were worth 100$ the most expensive tip you sent me was a KAMUI medium. The rest were under 10$ if even. Wow talking about Indian giving. You want them back? I will send them to you. Scam artist jees no wonder so many people told me to stay away from az. So you think 20$ for a spool of nylon wrap is a lot? Maybe it is but after the shipping and everything I am left with what 3$ profit. For a spool that can make 30 cues? Wow. Did I not to the review like a promised? And by the way for your info half of those tips I installed for free for beginners here in town. Wow . I am just about done with Az. I am blessed with a loving and supporting family and friends so yea. If you are not going to give me your address to send the tips back I will throw them in the trash.

When I played Varner at IU the rag cloth was I think yellow, possibly orange. Equipment, not kept up, but hey, its a college.

I tell you what, I'll apologize and admit I like to "round up" to the nearest dollar because once you tap into that last $20, it is gone anyways. My bad and my mistake on that part.

BUT.... also maybe your memory eludes you but I gave you six tips, not five. At one time I had all that written down but it is long gone after you posted the review. And where do you get I am an Indian giver ??? I never asked for anything back..... in any of my posts, and I surely don't want any tips back once they've been installed on your local players cues. As for the ONLY good tip I gave you ????? I gave you a Kamui, a Moori, and a Tiger Onyx (along with 3 other "cheaper" tips), so that alone with the three GOOD tips is $60.00 bucks, then we'll say another $15.00 bucks for 3 cheaper tips, and THEN I even paid the shipping for you so we'll call it an exact $80.50. And yet you are worried about your $3.00 profit from some nylon AND crying about the shipping for it. Of course I asked for things on here when I first started, still do at times, but I have NEVER asked for anything FREE. Some of us are just tired of the begging, that's the bottom line, especially since you aren't willing to pay it forward and are so worried about a $3.00 profit. It's also nice to know you're done with AZ all while asking for free donations. Good luck on your quest.
