Underdog Cue Makers

I wouldn't say Keith Kues is an under dog, but he did start building again, and he already can't seem to keep up with demand. I'm loving the stuff he's building right now! It's insane!!!!!

There are 3 great relatively unknown cue makers in Texas

John Nemic in Dallas,a retired engineer who makes fantastic cues

Larry Vigas..who makes beautiful great playing cues for under $1000

Jake in Sherman,he won cue of the year here last year, his designs are cutting edge
He is only in it for the fun and owns a successful business so you might
have a long wait

many knowledgeable wealthy collectors are calling

if you want a creative masterpiece, let me give you a clue

don't try to tell him what or how to make it,not only does he not like to be micro managed,he can afford to make what he wants for whom he wants

not that he is arrogant or uppidy,he is just his own man

All 3 of these are really great bets for you,i love mine

Dean has a great eye for design and workmanship.I know Nemic's work
is fantastic, and Jake built cue of the year,so Vigas is probably pretty
damn good.
Seems like only yesterday that Steve Klien was at the head of this list!
Now he is on the list of great cuecraftsman, that collectors are after.

Good list. I'm hoping someday to own cues from Larry and Jake. Hopefully, sooner than later.

Star City Cues

From a great cue maker in Roanoke, VA just got mine and it plays great and looks great.

Gary Johnson from Flippin, Arkansas.

He made a fantastic player for me. I'm going to have him whittle up a breaker for me this year.

Also Mark Smith from Russellville, Arkansas. Makes a nice cue.

My family is from drew county, Arkansas. I'd love to purchase a stick from a good custom cue maker from my home state. hows the price looking??

That's pretty mean spirited, and bashing the OP for asking the question.

There is, on occasion, a new or up and coming maker that is exceptional. That's true. He's asking about that.

Up and comers may have been at it for ten years or more. Yes they are still learning. But if any cue maker tells me he isn't still learning then he is lying. That goes all the way to the top.

Lawyer?
How about an up and coming surgeon? That's a better comparison than the lawyer one you made. I'll give you the inside scoop...sometimes the old fart still cutting people because he has a boat payment to make probably isn't as good as many of his younger colleagues. Experience isn't everything. Sometimes obsolescence masquerades as experience.

Lastly, since you definitely, by your own admission, would not want any early cue made by one of the great masters, if you ever inherit one or come by one I will take it off your hands. I wouldn't want you to have to tolerate handling something inferior like an early Gina, Bushka, Gus, or the like.

.

I didn't get that feeling when I read his post but I can understand how it would be taken that way. I am sometimes bad at misunderstanding someones intentions.

I would like to add a couple of names to the list. Neither of them are brand new to cue making but I also don't think they get enough coverage. Barry Cameron in Connecticut makes a great cue. He made my player for me a few years ago and I still use it almost every single day. Another cue maker I am impressed is Bob Dzuricky, he also has a great eye for detail and turns out excellent cues.

this is...

ridonkulous! terribly misinformed IMO

Up and comer...means still learning !!!
There's value in buying a high end custom from someone who has already made all the mistakes. Learned how to not only get em to look great, but hold up great over the years.

Would you let an up and coming attorney try to save you from the electric chair?

I'll go with experience...I've seen some up and coming work, and it's downright filthy, some of it. And if they can't get the inlays right, what does the fit look like where structural parts meet? Gaps with a bunch of glue between?

Maybe they are not unknown, but don't hear alot about Trevor & Co. at Carolina Customs...Maybe just not mentioned on this board often and seemed to lay low? Build nice "Traditional" styled cues. Maybe time will tell. Any thoughts?

Derek Lathom, just outside of Knoxville, Tn. Haven't spoke with him in a 2 or 3 years and I suppose he's still making cues. His cues are well constructed, have a lot of finish, a great hit, etc. Hard to run across one, but they are really good players. I had him make me a South West style cue in 2004 and it plays awesome. I wouldn't take 3 times the money that I've got in that cue. I have 4 South West cues and that Lathom hit is right up there with them. That's a bold statement, but a true statement.

guido orlandi ... very fine craftsman, well respected and his cues hit great .. I think his cues are a pretty good investment .. having fun do a couple conversions now ..

They build a heck of a nice looking cue from what I've seen. It's not my style of cue, but it seems to be well done. I've never played one, but have to imagine the must play good. They always bring good dough, and with that execution I would imagine they play well too!

I play with a Jerry Olivier, which I don't consider a underdog, but there is a guy named Jim Odom in Ft.Worth that makes a very nice hitting cue. Also a man in Baton Rouge, I think his name is Mike Anderson, make a cue that goes by the name of Hendrick, I think that is a very nice cue. If I have screwed up these names, someone please correct me.--Smitty

They do, indeed! My favorite cue I've owned so far (see signature block below), it is a beast. And they can do just about anything or any style, not just old school.

Josh Treadway

I have to mention Treadway Cues. Here's some of his latest work.

The music cue is my favorite, he hand-cut the notes, bars and staff and inlaid all of them. The music wraps the entire butt.

I'm not a star trek fan, but that trekkie cue is great as well!

He also made one for a huge St. Louis Blues hockey fan; similar to the music cue, he hand cut the blues logo and inlaid them around the cue.

There's no question he's going to be a very worthwhile collectable cuemaker in the future.
