Not a Palmer - eBay Auction

Well, it certainly is a beautiful shaft.

If it is straight, it might give one incentive to have a matching butt made for it. 50 dollars for a start seems ok by me.

It may look out of place on just any cue.

but i don't know that for sure, please don't buy this and than tell me its not for a palmer and want to send it back. again I DON'T KNOW WHO MADE IT.

Its pretty clear he's had to deal with the obnoxious know-it-all's on ebay that demand you list your property the way they see fit.

Pretty cool looking regardless.

If it is straight, I'd take it for 50 or whatever within reason and worry about the small details after.

Obviously, much work went into the shaft alone no matter who made it.

Don't sweat the small stuff sometimes.

If people think its a Palmer 20 its going for way more than 50 bucks, easily high enough to be worth a sweat.

Thanks

classiccues blessing?

Auction has been updated with a statement that Joe at Classiccues has verified this is a Palmer shaft.

i won the auction and i should have the shaft in a couple of days. i will see if i can make a definite identification of the origin of the shaft and let everyone know.

I will be interested in your comments.

In my opinion it is not a Palmer shaft. I requested additional pictures from the seller and he said those in the auction were the best he could provide. I also asked some specific questions and got some vague answers.

I was hoping Joe or Tate would provide some comment, but maybe they didn't see the thread, especially Joe since the seller claimed he gave it his blessing, albeit in a phone conversation.

Bottom line, if this were a stray Model 20 shaft, current "Supreme" owners would have been all over this and would have driven the final bid price much higher.

i may send the shaft to either joe or tate for their opinion, we'll see how they like my pictures.

The doubts alone could have kept the price down. In fact if it is a quality reproduction it is well worth the final auction price anyway I would say.

I'm not claiming to be a Palmer guru, but everything looks good to me.... What are people seeing, that is causing the doubts of it being Palmer? Not all ebony is super black. I've had more than a handful of Palmers that were more brown than black. Is there something else I'm missing.

Here is my opinion based on the pictures. Its a Model 20 shaft, however made in the 80's for a possible replacement. The reason I say this is the diamonds have the newer slots, ie; thinner. Look at the shafts on our pages the diamonds are the original stubby wide slots. I believe it is a Palmer shaft, most likely rosewood.

However it is not impossible that those diamonds were in use in the 70's, so it could be an original shaft.

JV (---- had a rosewood 20...

Wish I had Remembered this....

The reason why I questioned whether this was a Palmer shaft is because some years ago I purchased two shafts on eBay that looked identical to the shaft in this auction. They were sold to me as new shafts recently made by an unknown cuemaker.

On the shafts I owned, the darker wood appeared to be stained and on one of the two, the stain bled into the maple. I am not a wood expert, but I am somewhat knowledgeable in woodworking and the shafts I owned were not rosewood, and they certainly were not ebony. The overall finish was only fair which you can see if you enlarge the pics.

I eventually resold them, one at a time, on eBay.

Without good pictures from the current eBay seller, I couldn't be sure whether his was one of the two shafts I had owned and the he wasn't cooperative to provide additional photos or information, other than to say he bought it years ago and didn't remember when or where.

Well, it dawned on me this morning that I might still have pics of one of those shafts on my hard-drive and sure enough, I do.

Whether this recent eBay shaft is one of the two I owned, is open to debate, but comparing the photos of each, they look similar, if not identical.

It is certainly reasonable that Palmer made replacement shafts for someone's Model 20, but to apply that thinking here is to believe all of these are Palmer shafts and if that is the case where's the butt for these? Why are there two (or three)? And they all appear to the new?

Again I wish I remember I had the attached photos earlier.

The seller said he "didn't remember" where he bought the shaft?

People are awesome.

I'm sure there are fakes..... I was just curious if there was something specific that indicated this one was. I'm always looking for new ways to ID cues. Information is always valuable.
