I don't think a breakout is a breakout if you just freeze the CB up to the object ball.

Player B makes the shot and runs into the cluster of three balls and two of the balls get bumped about....

How is that not thee definition of a break out ?

The "18" are clearly insane.

I can't believe there is any debate on this beyond the first post. I thought AZ was full of pool players. :) Do we need to revisit the spot shot thread too ?

:grin-square:

That's where you messed up. AZ is full of leaguers

When you say "I'm going to break those balls out" it's implied the goal is to be successful.

To be successful you should have a shot on the next ball.

I say it's a push

A couple of things: I never would have bet if the stipulations were that I had to make the next ball.

I offered to bet $100 that I would get over 60% of the votes.

He wouldn't take that bet and he's glad he didn't.

I had also told him we could call it a push since I didn't want to argue semantics.

You let him out too easy. I would have taken the cash.

So then if you make a bet that you can break at 30mph and hit that speed, the other guy can not pay saying you did not make a ball and don't have a good shot at the next one?

You'd have to then be OK to assume that any bet made has a bunch of other things added on. I bet I will get a 100% on my test. Well, you did not graduate and get a good job, so I'm not paying.

The result of the bet was accomplished, anything after that is only part of the continuing game.

If I bet I would make a ball on the break at 9-ball...and the guy didn't want
to pay 'cause I had to push....he loses my action, at least.
I see no significant difference with your situation.

He is bad action.

Clearly, player B should win the bet.

For player A to have won the bet, the bet should have been... I'm going to break up that cluster AND make the next ball... which was not the case.

Come to think about it, what game were you playing?

Based on the OP, it sounds like either 8-ball or 9-ball. If so, I stand by player B.

OTOH, had the game been 14.1, I'd switch sides and stand by player A... but there is no "next ball" in 14.1 so you obviously weren't playing 14.1.

The point of those thoughts is... which game you are playing influences the common interpretation of success on a breakout attempt.

I'm also guessing that just hitting the cluster was a major challenge for the shooter (player B) so I stand behind player B, again.
