Name a player that evokes mythical status

when people talk about earl, at least "old earl", it's like they're talking about the god of pool.

With earl, more than any other player (even efren), I hear people say "when he hit his high gear, nobody in the world had to like it". "He was perfect on every ball and absolutely never missed"... "he would enter and just win everything in sight". "one mistake and before you know it, you were down 5 racks".

I missed most of his prime years, but I see the records list and I can't argue...

I simply cannot put any mythical status on Rudolph Wanderone.

The man made himself both rich and famous off a complete LIE. Tommy D.

Harold Worst
Cole Dickson
Keith McCready
Ronnie Allen
Mike Eufemia

People make hard-to-believe and impossible-to-prove-or-disprove claims about the amazingly high gears all these players had all the time. Not saying they didn't have those gears, but these are instances where there's a lot of legend and fairly little actual record.

fats brown from the twighlight zone:grin-square:

bbb ... I can't believe I watched the video and even posted how excellent it was. About an hour later I hear that Jonathan Winters just died. I thought I was in the Twilight Zone. :frown:

Jim Brown.
Michael Jordan.
Wayne Gretzky.
Babe Ruth.

Maniac (question didn't specify what type of player)

There is some good talent in that list, however I think you fall short on them all. I think a better list would be

Bobby Orr
Tom Brady
Larry Bird
Ted Williams

Yup. Seen them all live and in person. Funny, turns out all those guys played for Boston teams ;)

As far as pool players go, one of the best unknown players from the 80's and 90's.....Nick Vlahos.

Ronnie Allen has to be mentioned (edit, noticed Andrew Manning already did).

Oh yeah, and this guy.

Just got done watching a JJ Jenkins video of Mark Tadd. I believe at one point he was considered the second coming.

For those who may not know, he posted here on AZ Billiards.

I would have to say, as a forum member, he was an APA 3.

Earl did win more than once in most years in the 1980's and 1990's. But sometimes people exaggerate. Quite a few other guys were winning events during those same years -- guys like Archer, Bustamante, Hall, Parica, Reyes, Sigel, Varner.

Correct. Sigel was the one winning everything he entered until around... 1986 and by then he was starting to get bored. Varner won almost every tournament in 1989.

Buddy caught a second wind in the early 90's after being known as the best road 9-ball player pf his generation. And Johnny was the player of the decade of the 90's.

Still Earl was a dominant force throughout the 80's, 90's and beyond. That speaks to the legend and myths of Sigel, Hall, Varner and Archer.

the best?

When you talk about the best you need to clarify tournament or for the cash. At one time nobody except Buddy wanted anything to do with Jose Parica. For the cash Efron always was behind Jose P. Keith, Earl, and MIKE could get here on a given day but not often. Tournaments they all could take turns.

I heard "Fat Boy" tell a version, is there anyone else that saw this match?

Just got done watching a JJ Jenkins video of Mark Tadd. I believe at one point he was considered the second coming.

Mark was one of the best gamblers for a period of time. I was flown to Las Vegas to play him for $20,000, a few people on this forum saw that match.
At some point I'll tell the story from my perspective, I heard "Fat Boy" tell a version, is there anyone else that saw this match?

I also gambled HIGH against Reid Pierce, Billy Johnson, Denny Searcy, Country Calvin, David Matlock, Weldon Rogers, Vernon Elliot, Doug Smith, Efren Reyes, Bustemante, Rafael, Rodney Morris, Shannon Dalton, Brumback, Dave Favor, Bobby Pickle, Bobby Stovall, Eugene Browning, Louie Roberts, Shane V., Johnny Archer, Jack Cooney, Luat, Parica, Cliff J., Jimmy Wetch, and a few hundred other well known gamblers of the 80s and 90s, usually in their "home courts" on their favorite tables.

These were the "mythical characters" of the 80s and 90s and there were others like Hopkins, Jersey Red, Eddie Taylor, Lassitor, Leggs, Bugs, Pretty Boy Floyd (Jimmy Mataya) Loscotti, Fusco Brothers, Cornbread Red, etc. that were before my time. These were the "Golden Ages" of the pool hustlers/gamblers, and "Mythical Characters".
