What brings you back to your early playing days?

a time machine?! anyone got one?
My earliest memories of shooting pool were all Grandpa related...
Grandpa has been gone for almost 30 years, and Grandma moved out of that house at least 20 years ago. Only thing EVER playing on the radio when playing pool was Jack Buck's voice and the glorious sounds coming over the airwaves from Busch Stadium in St. Louis; so no songs relate....
I guess I occasionally will feel a little nostalgic when I here the "thump" of a full table bank hit at pocket speed (think 1P), and finally hear the ball fall into the pocket what seems like minutes later...

thanks to the OP for making me really think about it, I was kinda bummed thinking that nothing "brings me back".

Jack Buck, one of the all time greats. I listened to him for the first 30 years of my life calling the plays! It just aint the same without him. Sorry, but his son Joe is a apple that fell too far from the tree for me.

For me, the smell of talcum powder. I can't smell that stuff without thinking of where I first started playing. I'm sure no pool player on earth smells baby powder and thinks "Baby", we all think "Pool Hall".

i know someone's going to laugh but the boy band "blue". that crap used to be all the time when i was just starting out

The smell of Brunswick bowling pins, wax, etc. In Cleveland in the 60's, Brunswick always installed a dozen or so Anniversaries in all their larger bowling facilities.

Bringing back memories from early days!

Ah, that squeaky chalking sound does it for me every time!, and listening to two guys argue over how they are going to match up for a set, money wager, spot ,...ect:)

When I think of talcum powder I think of a diaper full of yellow shit. I don't know why. I just do.
Actually, what takes me back is when the satellite station is playing songs from the groove yard of old 60's, and 70's hits.
One Pocket, a little Righteous Brothers, and some Pepsi Cola with peanuts.

Cigar smoke can do it for me too. That and creaky hard wood floors.

One of the good halls that closed was upstairs in an old ware house. Still had the hard wood floors.

Certain songs can send me back, like "Dancing in the Moonlight" by King Crimson. The other thing is seeing a player shooting in a style that was particular to some California players when I was growing up -- a sort of upright, pronated wrist style that is very distinctive. You don't see it much nowadays, but I did see one guy on a trip to Florida a few years ago shooting that way and it took me back. Certain old-school cues can do it too.

Dating myself a little here..But Bobby Gentry's "Ode to Billie Jo" was popular for so long during my favorite pool years..If they had a juke box in the pool room..it was playing !.. Until "ode" came out, the dominant song, in the early 60's was Ray Charles and "Georgia" !
Seems like the big hits lasted longer back then...If I hear those songs today, lotsa pool mem's come rushing in..:)

funny you mention that, there was one brand that the smell reminds me of the first couple months i played.

also music, when i hear a song i can remember what room it reminds me of playing in, thats a long list now.

My hearing isn't as good as it was when I was young--deaf in my right ear since birth--but on certain days my hearing is like it was when a kid--and I can hear the ball slowly rolling across the felt--when I hear that ,I gets goose bumps

Peanut butter crackers. Every time I see package of PBC it reminds me of Sat afternoons in the pool room having a snack with a can of Coke.

No reminders of my early days of pool, but whenever I hear the Doors song "Light MY Fire", I have an overwhelming feeling of nostalgia. To the point of freaky!!! Can't explain why though.

As far as reminders of my early days of pool, it's whenever I run across a table/tables that are covered in a butterscotch-colored cloth. One of the poolhalls that I "cut my teeth" in back in the 60's had cloth on their tables this color.

Any time I go into a dimly lit, scuzzy bar whose patrons have "lots of city miles" I get a little catch in my throat. Growing up in East Texas (Longview if it matters) I worked with my dad from age 6-7 up when I wasn't in school. On lunch, or bad weather days if we were doing a roof that week, he'd take me to a bar and we'd play pool. Leon's bar and grill and Moms biker bar are the two I remember most, and I too remember SRV being heavy in the music rotation. As a fearless, creative shot-maker with no concept of position play I was still able to beat a lot of the grown up men, and East Texas pride led to me making quite a few dollars off of rednecks and bikers who refused to believe a kid could beat them. Some of them got pretty hot, but the rest of the guys present made sure to curb the losers temper tantrums. All of the guys were looking out for me, and to a kid that felt really cool. My biggest "score" was around $50 one night from assorted $2 games.
When I visit home, I take him out to his new hangout... same kind of place. It's nice to take a break from being a pool snob... no Diamonds, no Aramith Super pros, no Simonis, and no custom cues. Just $10 in quarters, beers on me win or lose, and a couple hours of precious time with my Dad.

Did you ever go to Northfield Lanes, in Warensville Hts. In the 60's all the top players played there, after that it was Kingpin Lanes and then Cloverleaf , all anniversary's.

Great post.

Stevie Ray Vaughn's rendition of Little Wing. That does it every time.

Every monday at my local dive bar, a guy plays live music (one man electric guitar). It was late, and everybody was leaving. So I asked him to play me some Little Wing. And I sang it in my best Jimi/Stevie/Sting combo version

Freddie <~~~ with the verse so short, I don't have time to forget the words

Actually, next time you do commentary on a stream, I'll hijack the chat and demand a song hehe.
