Pray for Cole Dickson

Keith just got off the phone with Cole's ex-wife who said Cole is in bad shape. She said they are looking into a hospice setting for him so that he will be comfortable. That is all they can do now, is keep him comfortable.

Cole was conscious yesterday a little bit, but today he got worse, way worse.

It was just this past December 2012 that we learned Cole suffered from liver cancer, but he seemed to be okay and was in good spirits.

Please pray for Cole Dickson.

Here's a caracature poster from Red's Houston 1984 tournament poster, with Cole Dickson somewhere in the mix. I wish I could blow it up and see it. It's for sale, $24.95. Looks like a cute pool keepsake for anybody who likes collecting these items.

See if you can find Cole on there.

All the great players from this era, there's just not much written about them in hard-copy print media, and for sure, there's very few photos, sad to say.

Here's what looks to be a scanned black-and-white photo by Bill Stigall of a very young Cole Dickson.

In Richard Byrnes' Treasury of Trick Shots in Pool and Billiards, he writes, "Only imaginative shotmakers like California's Cole Dickson think of it in games. I leave it to the readers to make a trick shot making use of this idea."

Knowing this about Cole explains a lot about how my partner formed his game as an offensive shotmaker with Cole as his pool mentor. When the difficult shot is successful, it's pure pool poetry in motion. There's no better art form in pocket billiards than an almost-impossible, successfully executed shot.

The commentators will say, "He should have played safe," when they come with a miss, but when these shotmakers like Cole succeed, it can bring down the house.

So sorry to hear this especially for someone so much younger than me. He and I did battle on the pool table many times. Great guy and easy to get along with.

I think John Coito drew that pic, he did all of the St Pattys day for Ferroni's in Modesto for years, great stuff

great video, Sorry to hear that he isnt well, I know Billy was just there, i didnt realize he was this sick. terrible

Liver cancer is a strange disease. Some folks have it for a long time and don't suffer from the symptoms until after many years. Others aren't so lucky. They call it "galloping cancer" sometimes because when it spreads, it's affects the entire system quickly. Aside from a liver transplant, there's not much anyone can do. My girlfriend had a liver transplant about 10 years ago, and she has all kinds of side effects from the medication, but she's still hanging in there.

Keith is really tore up. It is so hard to know your friends are suffering from afar, and there's nothing you can do to stop their discomfort. :frown:

i know its a bad cancer, i never head it called that before. when i moved to beverly hills in 93 i met a real estate guy there who was VERY successful, he owned lots of buildings up and down the street the phone room was on, i used to go to lunch with him and he taught me lots, super nice guy, then in 95 i went back out to vegas for a few months, came back to beverly hills, "Where's Larry?", liver cancer-gone less than 2 months. Wow i was shocked, then a few years back my biz partners girls mom gets it said she had "A couple months". She declined any and all chemo, she lived 3 years. she got sick, started on pain meds and was gone within 2 weeks, but the 3 years she had it she was fine.

Thats all i know about it, I sure feel bad for Cole, Keith. Man everyone seems to be dieing lately:embarrassed2:

Cole fires that bank in good as anyone ever, I like that shot a lot. Bobby Cotton shoots it often, for some reason lots of people look it over and pass on it. Cotton got me shooting it, powerful shot forsure.

No one spanked them quite like Cole. He wasn't afraid to put a little mustard on the ball.

Geeze, it seems like every week we have another legend passing. Sorry to hear about Cole.

Barb and I both liked Cole a lot.

One of my favorite players ever.

Cole could find center ball. Few players can do this.

We will miss you.

Bill S.

I first saw Cole when he was about 16 (about 1966). He played Bucktooth nine ball and won. He declined Tooth's offer of one pocket.

Later in the 1970s he played in some of Terry Stonier's 14.1 tournaments in Sacramento. He didn't exactly play 14.1 but he did run 80s.

If this is not the end, heal quickly. If it is, wishing Cole goes comfortably. He was a joy to watch play the few times I had the privileged.

Dave
