If you do not have the rocks available you may paint an image of Alvin. But the image has to be at least 18 feet tall.

I'm not sure which part it was but it was somewhere in the Bigfoot 10-Ball 2013 Southern Classic Shane Van Boening VS. Dennis Orcollo. I was watching it with my boyfriend this morning and couldn't believe how unprofessional he was. I appreciate a little humor here and there but shoot, come ON.

Someone made a joke about Shane being deaf, saying it was a good thing he couldn't get distracted by the music. har har. Seems a little insensitive to me.

You guys all crack me up - definitely going to mute the bad ones and play something better! Thanks.

It was Danny Harriman that made the comment, and he did not make it as a joke,
He feels that Shane has an advantage being without perfect hearing.
Danny says that he is not allowed to play with earplugs, that is what
was said, and what was discussed.
There were no jokes, Alvin has always been a strong Shane supporter
so I am sorry that you put this BS out there.

The joke came from Danny Harriman, not Alvin (for those who haven't heard it). It did seem a bit insensitive the way he first said it, but he had a good point about the distracting factor of music (it can bring memories to mind and the words can produce distracting visuals). I don't think he meant to be insensitive...just came out that way.

Funny thing about this, it Earl said the same thing about Shane
and that Earl said he wished he was deaf so he could be
like Shane,,,,, the forums were abuzz.
People should be nicer to people. I think hearing or no hearing that
Shane would be one of the best pool players. He just has drive.

I liked Danny's commentary. He's not a chatterbox like most "color commentators" but he knows what he's talking about when he does talk. As far as I know he's doing it for free and, anyway, how can you complain about a free stream?

Yeah, and honestly, I didn't make it very far after that before it went on mute so I have no idea whether it improved as the match went on. I had heard him plenty before but that time it was more than I could take.

I will say this though, I can take a hell of a good nap listening to Alvin do commentary. So monotone. He ranks third on my "nappability" scale, behind NASCAR and golf.

I do remember watching a video that I believe was his. You could hear him, off mic, telling the guest commentator to ignore any BS that was on the chat just talk about the match.

As an avid chat room junkie myself, I remember that comment. I remember it being more direct, like "ignore the chat room; they're all idiots." I was a little bit shocked that Alvin would say something like that. It certainly made me feel unappreciated.

This happened while I had three friends over (who were relatively new to pool, and new to live streaming) to watch the stream and join in the chat room with me. It was quite embarrassing for me, and not a good introduction to live streaming for them.

I appreciate all of InsidePool's streams, and watch almost all of them, and I appreciate Alvin for what he does, but that little comment he made when he thought he was off the mic seemed to reveal his true feelings about those of us that are active enough to watch the stream and engage in the chat.

Otherwise, I don't really care. I am grateful for the free streaming, and I'll watch and listen just about any time Alvin has a stream going. The dude has tons of character and he is usually pretty funny on the air.

As for the commentators addressing the chatters directly, while on a live stream, I appreciate that, and I think it adds a dimension of interactivity that makes the whole experience more fun. If you feel left out, feel free to join the chat. Otherwise, please understand that many of us do enjoy the chat-commentator interaction.

Some "brand-new member" joins today and slams the commentator from InsidePOOL, a free livestream.

I didn't hear the broadcast, but at least it was free. Not everybody can afford to pay for seasoned or experienced commentators for free livestreams, so it is what it is.

On a good note, be happy it was free and kept you up to date on the happenings.

This Alvin guy is the worst I have ever heard, LIVE, LIVE, LIVE................. WTF. The first time I heard this guy commentate I couldn't stand it. 100% bad

I sadly agree that the commentary on the streams is mostly nonsense. When they start to talk about the show being LIVE over and over and over I want to scream STFU!!! I know it's LIVE I'm watching it idiot.. It seems to me their are tons of knowledgeable top players that could do a far better job commenting. I like to hear about shot choices, run out possibilities, and the strengths and weaknesses of the decisions the players make. If I was looking for a new commentator I'd look for someone with a lot of pool knowledge and an upbeat attitude..

Not that my opinion matters any, but I for one appreciate what Alvin is doing. Sure, at times it can get a bit out of hand, thats what mute is for. It sure beats the alternative of not being able to watch at all, or shelling out money to listen to other/different people talking. If I want conversations or opinions I'll download a podcast. It also irritates me when commentators attempt shot prediction, not only are they off a majority of the time on the call, it makes the players look like idiots for their choices. Being in the heat of a match, a player is the only one who has to make those decisions and has their own reasoning for doing so. It's a mental game, and making wise decisions is more than half of that battle, no reason to make the player look foolish for his decisions good or bad.
If someone would charge for a stream WITHOUT any commentary, I may shell out a few bucks for that if it's not priced ridiculously. I mute the TV when watching golf too, I'm there to watch the players and the game.
I mean no disrespect to Alvin with this next statement, but I'm NOT watching his stream because I want to hear Alvin, I'm watching it for the action on the table. I'll say it again though, I do appreciate and respect what Alvin is doing for the sport and it's followers who otherwise would not get to see any of it at all. I also appreciate the skill, knowledge and financial investment in equipment & travel it takes to make it happen.
Keep up the good fight Alvin, there are people who love what you're doing......

IMHO pool needs quiet. I can do my own play-by-play and analysis. But I don't like to have someone babbling over the sound of the table and distracting my attention. It's like people sitting behind you at a movie and talking through the whole thing.

Sure I can mute the audio but then I lose the sound of the table...and pool playing has great sounds.

I admire and appreciate Alvin for traveling non-stop around the country and single-handedly setting up the cameras/stream. That doesn't mean I have to like that he lessens my viewing experience - extremely.

I've learned a lot by listening to good commentary. What would be cool is to have two audio channels. You could turn off the commentary if desired and still hear the table. But that's just day dreaming.

Sometimes there are technical issues as well. One commentator will be too loud or quite relative to the other commentator, or as mentioned earlier, the table sounds.

I agree with both sides of this thread. On the one hand be grateful you are getting to watch pool for free. On the other hand, some of the commentary is so bad that it becomes a negative. I'm not always expecting great commentary, but bad commentary is a negative, and I have also been dissatisfied with many of the specific issues listed in this thread.

However, Alvin does play and know pool. He has had streams that were quite acceptable. Some interaction - in moderation - with the chat is a nice touch. People can ask questions, etc. But the main body of the stream's commentary does need to be about the match at hand.
