Earl wins turning stone

Sounds like Earl is in a good, stable environment now at Steinway. Able to play a lot of pool and make good money giving lessons, etc.

Earl is in stroke.

Attended turning stone for first time an must say I was very disgusted with director mike zuglan who penalized guys a game on the wire because he decided to start matches 10 minutes before the posted time. An the player wasn't at the table but was there before there scheduled time. On at least two of those matches the player penalized lost on the hill. In my eyes he owes those guys an apology. Congrats to the pearl for winning turning stone

Next stop for the Pearl, Mosconi Cup Team Member?

After winning Turning Stone and narrowly losing to Shane in the final of the Steinway Classic, one must assume that Earl is on the team. He's red hot right now, and Team USA's chances would be compromised greatly by his absence. He might have made it on reputation alone, but he deserves to be on the team on merit.

Red hot right now . . . AND he turned *52* years-old (in June). Who wouldn't love that kind of world class staying power amidst tons of much younger opponents (SVB, Thorsten, Mika etc.)!

I'm curious about this.

Earl the pearl

My wife and I went to turning stone on Saturday to watch the event. When earl strickland was playing Brandon shuff and lost he was slamming the rack into the table slot, ranting and just being Earl, when he played Mike DeChaine and won he was getting upset with some of the spectators and generally melting down, an awesome spectacle to see, his playing was incredible. I'm not sure which was more entertaining, his playing or his antics, it made for an event I'll never forget. I asked him for his autograph earlier and he was really cool about it. This was my first live event I've attended And I will try to make all the ones in the future, it was such a great time. All of the players i met were really nice, and the Turning Stone puts on a great event. Thank you Mike DeChaine, Thorsten Hohmann, Karen Corr Earl Strickland and all the other great players for making a very memorable evening for my wife and myself.

That's a great report, glad you had a positive experience - it's not MMA, NFL, or NBA, it's Pocket Billiards!!! There's always going to be some "fire" when champions are competing, however in pool no one ever gets hurt. ;) 'The Game is the {Peaceful} Teacher'

I'm curious how he behaved all week??

Well, I know he kept up his running while he was there.

We were walking to the venue from the parking lot on Saturday morning and just as we were crossing the perimeter road, here comes Earl, flying down the road like a red-faced bat out of Hell. He wasn't just jogging, he nearly took my wife out he was going so fast. He pulled up just before colliding with her, breathing hard and sweating profusely. My wife just looks at him and says, "Good morning, Earl." He kinda grunted something unintelligible back at her and resumed his run. It was the damnedest thing, and we got a big kick out of it.

I have to say he went over the line with Jason Klatt on the TV table. He was letting the F-bombs fly, yelling out while Jason was shooting how "fu*king slow this guy is". Jason tried to ignore it, but it got in his head. He should have done what Sossei did and politely told him not to talk while he was shooting. I know this wasn't audible to the folks watching at home, but it was fairly non-stop, and probably cost Klatt the match. Jay, I know if you were there you wouldn't have tolerated it, but no one stopped him, and of course, the rail just encourages him so they can laugh at him. Sad, very sad.

yes it is sad

The last part you tell about what he did in the Jason Klatt match really puts a damper (for me) on his winning the tournament. So is Earl actually sharking his opponents to gain an edge? Sad that someone with so much talent has to resort to that if it's true.....I like champions who have class....

I'm not going to go there about Earl's antics being intentional sharking moves because l'm not in his head. The guy's got way too much pride to want a win that way. I just think he thrives on the attention of his fans and loves to give them what they came for - a great show. Look back at that video of him and Miz on YouTube back when he first hit the public eye. The fans adored him and his unbelievable talent. After the win, he told the fans he loved them, and I think his troubles began when folks started to taunt him to make him angry.

I think he feels his fans turned on him (and he would not be far off the mark), and this made him a bitter man. Recently he seems to have mellowed some, and I think he deserves a chance without constantly being condemned for his past behavior. That's just one man's opinion. You may feel differently, which is your right and I respect that as well.
