Mosconi Cup USA Team

Earl the Burl? Not likely. It's not just that the other team doesn't like him, it's that the owner of the event doesn't like him. And the owner of the event decides who plays. It's about the show, which means good pool AND good presentation. Over there in Europe, which constitutes, MOST of Matchroom's audience, they expect civil behavior. They don't want to see Earl's antics. Earl is the definition of the "ugly American". (And it's kind of sad to me that so many Americans seem to accept his kind of behavior).

You say that, but most people's favourite tennis player from the USA (over here) is John McEnroe..

And btw, Earl is, probably, my favourite American pool player from the USA..

All Star Teams both Euro and USA
Should be a great event i can't wait

Experience is the teacher.

If anyone doesn't think that the chirping gets to the players, they are wrong. Some of the more despicable stuff (about players wives etc) is beneath anything any American might do.

I've also seen the baiting of American players by European players as well. Hey, look, it's all in good fun. No hard feelings. I know the Euro boys can take it just as good as they can dish it out.

I think I get why we don't see eye to eye in the other thread (about getting rah rah USA doodads
and clothing and being the loudest crowd at the cup). The cheering and such is good clean competitive fun
on the surface, but there's an undercurrent of hostility.

Part of that is what you're getting at (the over-the-line comments made about families and such).

Another part of it is nationalism, which is a word that lacks the negative "oomph" of the word 'racism' but
lives in the same neighborhood. It's people believing their country and culture is just inherently superior.
I just can't get into that because no part of me thinks an American is superior to a European.

To me your 2nd sentence illustrates how an otherwise reasonable and nice guy can get poisoned
by this mindset. Can you imagine saying:

"Some of the more despicable stuff (about players wives etc) is beneath anything any white person might do."?

You're too smart to think that out-of-line fan behavior is something Americans never do :/

Creedo, I could not imagine bringing race into this discussion. Couldn't you have used some other statement to make your point? :frown:

My point was that while a little tomfoolery by fans is something we can all overlook from time to time; but bringing a player's family into it is completely off limits to my standards and just about anyone I know. I didn't see or read about any American players or American fans saying anything about European players' families.

However I will grant you that it is likely that there are some American fans who under the right circumstances would demean a European player's family in a heartbeat.

I think what incenses me about the few DESPICABLE European fans who stoop so low is not just their behavior, but the lack of resolve by the rest of the European community to be at least as incensed as I was.

I don't view my perspective as Americans being superior to anyone. If anything it is my attempt to make an admonishment and probably a useless warning to anyone, (American, European, Canadian etc.) that I view talking badly about another man's family as DESPICABLE BEHAVIOUR. Hopefully, by putting it out there, maybe people will stop to consider how hurtful such a thing can be.

I could probably have gotten below your sensitive Canadian radar by simply saying that I didn't hear or see or read about any American fans or players making DESPICABLE remarks about European players' families. Sometimes you just have to say things to get them off your chest and sometimes people take them the wrong way and sometimes you just don't communicate well enough to be understood. c'est la vie

To get back on track: The bad guys are the ones who talk badly about another player's family and that is the bottom line.

Thanks for your perspective.

I agree with Creedo, I think it is all in poor taste.

I love pool and I dont need a Jerry Springer setting to make it exciting or worth watching.

If some do, great. But to me it cheapens a great game and opportunity for both sides.

Again, I suggest, take the higher ground.

Best of rolls for all,

Ken

the US team is all heart and emotions so of course it gets to them. even the pressure of the expectations from the home crowd will get to them. hatch, morris, earl especially..

the EURO team on the other side are grown up with what you call soccer. where people in the crowd literaly smack each other on the heads with fists/chairs/loose objects, and occationally the attacks the players too. ever wondered why players like boyes, melling, daz are so fearless? that's the reason. they couldn't care less if a guy in the crowd dressed as uncle sam call them limeys.

They definitely have the upper hand when it comes to experience in this area. :D

Joey, I agree with you as far as bringing families into it. Out of line.
I don't wanna harp on you and I know you're gonna do your own thing and not overly worry about if I approve :)

I'm just asking you to think for a second... if the race example I made seemed strong to you,
...why should it?
Why is saying it about a european reasonable, and I'm overly senstive to think otherwise,
but we both get our hackles up if you replace european with white person?
To me, they're the same thing.

If you feel they're different and the reason is "I never heard an american do that".
I can just say "well I never knew any white person to act like that".
Would you say "ok, I guess that's fair"?

But seriously... an american acting rude at a pool match, since you never saw it before:
Earl calls Nick Van den Berg's family a bunch of fools, right to his face.

Lmao. Earl kills me. He's talking to himself and chuckling at the same time lol. "I can't believe I'm going to win". Idk what you and Joey have going on but you are both great posters. I guess my skin is thick on topics like this
It may well just be my ignorance though.
