APA- Level up!!!

There may be around the country but our league doesn't seem to to get involved with them.

I guess things are different in the apa today. I played in regional apa events to qualify for national single events. That was over twenty years ago.

Yes it does appear that many folks enjoy playing like that. "The goal is to play better but dont move up in skill level."

The game plan right now is to win. Sorry gents I don't plan on going down any time soon. "Going up is tough, to try to get it lowered is nearly impossible."

Thanks for the tip Ken! "Stay a low handicap."

The game is fun whether I lose or win however, I am playing to win. I was ranked a skill level 1 after my first game. It's fun to win when you have no clue of what your doing. But it's much more enjoyable when I can control the table and win on my own terms.

Justadub missed my point, but thats okay.

IMO, most folks are out looking for strong lower ranked players. It is MUCH more valuable to be a KILLER THREE, verses a POOR FOUR.

Given the choice be the KILLER THREE, always.

League pool to me is like basketball. If a player scores 100 and your team loses, what good is it?

The goal, at least when I played was;

1.) Make the playoffs.
2.) Play well enough to get trip.
3.) Win Vegas.

The goal was NOT;

1.) See how high of handicap I can be.

Some like checkers, some like chess.

Thanks! I've played 48 games of 9b and just 20 of 8b. I was at a skill level of 3 in 9b for the last year or so. I started playing 8 ball again last June in the APA. I was surprised that I was moved to a 5. A part of my wants to think it was a typo :embarrassed2: Part of my knows I've been doing the hustle for a few weeks now :D
Thanks
JG
Nice job! You must be playing well, seen many players get stuck at 4 in APA 9b.

.....

Your gap between 8b and 9b is unusual, most players play 1 rank worse in 9b than in 8b.
Never saw someone's 8b game 2 ranks worse than their 9b. I bet you go up to a 4 in 8b soon.
Maybe a 5.

I'm not playing checkers babe!

"Given the choice..." intimates that one can and will choose how they are ranked, and the only way to do that is to try and manipulate your Skill Level.

That, as opposed to trying to win all the time, like Juicygirl is doing.

There isn't an easy way to cheat in chess, so far as I know.

Keep on winning, Loren!

To answer someone's question...
A pretty good rule of thumb is a player should run their APA number with ball in hand
and an open spread, in 9b. But I've only seen APA in 2 regions and it may be different elsewhere.
So a 5 can run 5 with a good layout. A 9 should run the rack if you scratch on the break.
4's and 5's are the bread and butter of any APA team.

Your gap between 8b and 9b is unusual, most players play 1 rank worse in 9b than in 8b.

Maybe a 5.

I know of some 6's that couldn't run 3 balls with ball in hand, but I also know of some 4's and 5's that could put together a 2-pack or more.

The 8ball and 9ball gap is silly out here as well. There are plenty 5, 6, and 7's that haven't played a game of 9ball ever.

Just stop it.

Encouraging sandbagging, instead of congratulating her on her accomplishments....good grief.

If more if us do things the right way, the better the experience will be for everyone. In other words, more people that DON'T cheat is a good thing.

You really are a negative person. At least the way you portray yourself here on AZB....

Again, Loren, GREAT job.

Good post, I agree. It's too bad most people focus more on how to beat the system rather than how to improve. Nice job Juicy, congrats for your accomplishments. Scott's a good teacher.

Congrats, Juicy. I've been trying to move up in 8-ball for 3 sessions now. Too bad my Captain only matches me up evenly anymore. I have a bad habit of playing to my opponent's speed.

Congratulations on moving up. I just got moved up to SL 4 in 9-ball, so I look to you as inspiration. Please disregard other people's comment about trying to game the handicap system.

you have twice as many 9 ball games as you do 8 ball so it stands to reason there is more info on your 9 ball games to adjust your handicap.

i am curious as to how you fare playing 8 ball vs 9 ball.

for example ' how many balls per inning do you average in 9 ball vs 8 ball.do you have trouble with pattern selection or breaking out clusters in 8 ball ? do you find it easier to just focus on one ball at a time in 9 ball vs thinking 3 or 4 balls ahead in 8 ball.

i noticed your avg number of safties played is about the same in both formats. you play a whole lot more safties than i do. my avg is 1.50 in 8 ball and 0.53 in 9 ball.

congrats on moving up. it seems like you have improved pretty rapidly in your playing ability since you 1st posted on here.

im impressed .

Hi LR,
I think I'm about the same in either game. My preference used to be 9 ball, now I am liking both about the same.

My average right now is at 3+ balls per inning in either game. In 8 ball I have trouble earlier in the game detecting patterns. I often ask for a coach at the beginning of the game for that reason. I can find a way out about 75 percent of the time, I may or may not be trying to make it if I'm snookered real good. I look at my next 3 balls or more and, I look at the opponent's placement on the table. My aim is to make my shot leave me something and leave them as little as possible should I miss.

My goal is to play at least 5 safeties per match. I don't care if you are a SL 3 or a SL 7 everyone gets the same treatment.

Thanks for your kind words.

Hmmm interesting... Now APA shows me at skill level of 4. Whatever same rules still apply. =D

this is really important in the skill level calculations as well. If you take 2 people who play the exact same # of innings against exact same skill level opponents and score the exact same points, their skill levels will vary based on the number of safeties. More or less (not precisely) but each safety reduces the inning count by 1 for the player that made it. So taking 2 4s playing, each wins their games, scoring 31 points in 12 innings. One has 6 safeties, the other has 0. The one with the 6 safeties is likely to (if he's been playing like that for a while) move up to a 5.

Since the APA keeps the exact math secret, its hard to say whether its really 1 inning per safety, 2 innings per 3 safeties, etc. but it is definitely a factor.

Jesus, apparently I'm safey mcsafer, my average is 2 in 8b and 5.7 in 9b.
I might need to start firing at more balls

Holy cheese and macaronis that's a lot of flipping safeties.
I LOVE IT.

Congratulations Loren! Keep up the good work! Since I'm living down here now, we'll get together and just spar some one of these days!

Scott Lee

So it appears I've moved to skill level 5 in 9 ball. I'm still a skill level 3 in eight ball :/

It would seem that my classes on the side with Mr. Donny Lutz and Mr. Scott Lee are paying off.... and they will continue to do so.

Now all I need to do is prevent a meltdown like the one I had a when I moved up to a skill level 3 because my plan is to keep wining. And this level up crap ain't gonna bring me down this time.

Cheerio,
JuicyGirl
