SVB is the best player on earth

I love watching the Filipinos Chinese and Europeans. But Shane has something special. I don't want to be stupid and try to describe it.

I will agree he is the best in the USA, but I am not ready to say the world...yet.

I do hope to be able to soon though. Anybody know if he knows how to use chopsticks?

Adapted from another post of mine in a different thread .....

The US Open just completed did not have a world championship quality field.

The top four Fillipinos were not there (Orcullo, Biado, Pagulayan, Bustamante) and the fifth best Fillipino reached the final. Ko Pin Yi and Wu Jiaqing sat it out and so did JL Chang. About half of the top fifteen players in the world weren't there. Finally, three of the top four finishers from last year's US Open were absent.

The US Open 10-ball event at the Rio in July had a way, way, way, way, way, stronger field than the US Open 9-ball event just completed. Rodney Morris' win over that field is far more impressive than Shane's win this past weekend.

To be the best, you have to beat the best fields, and Shane is rarely winning when all the top internationals show up. One day he will, but until then, he is just one of the big three, along with Appleton and Orcullo.

Wasn't Bustamante and Efren at the super billiards expo in Edison? How did they compare there to Shane?

Best what? Rotation player? Could be, straight pool player.... no way. We're all different, and if you could most accurately judge the best pool player by one game, rotation wouldn't be that game as far as I'm concerned.

Shane is for sure a great player.

If Shane showed more dedication to 14.1 (I understand why he doesn't), then I think he'd be a top player (in that game) for sure.

Also, people always talk about his break. Sure, it's an advantage to break like that, but he runs out so well. He does get out of line sometimes (maybe more than someone like Orcullo), but Shane's biggest strengths are his stroke and shot-making ability.

I know we've all played top players before, and rise up in excitement if they get out of line on a shot. It just doesn't seem like that glimmer of hope exists as much when Shane is running out.

.

He won last year too ;)

He's definetly the best American player. He's also ONE of the best in the world but as has been stated before what he lacks is a world championship. He doesn't play nearly as well on the international stage and until that happens I don't think you can consider him the best.

In the Philippines, there's a term called "dayo" or "dumadayo". It means "foreigner" or "not from here" kinda thing. In pool, this term is used when you go to another place and play the best player there. There's this idea that to prove you're the best, you travel and find the best player and then beat him on his turf - not the other way around. If you look for Efren money matches on youtube, playing some unknown guy, it's more likely that Efren is the "dayo".

There have been times in the past (most recently, Mika Immonen about 5 years ago) when a player has simply been dominant enough over his peers to be called "best player on earth" (quoting the OP). This day and time, I do not think there is a player that is so dominating to deserve that title. Today's players are so closely matched that it's a virtual coin-toss as to who might win a match/tournament on any given day.

SVB is certainly (as others have already alluded to) USA's best player, but not even then by a HUGE margin. There are still a few other players in America that can still "bring it" when the heat is on.

LOL "flavor of the month". Yeah, he's a (6-year) "flash in the pan". Keep practicing SVB & you might be somebody...someday...somewhere...

Efren is not really in the conversation anymore, although he can have occasional flashes of his old self. No idea whether Bustamante was there, but that event doesn't have an elite international field and it uses the truly comical "option to refuse the table after a miss" rule.

My post made it clear, though, that I rate Shane, Darren and Dennis above Bustamante right now.
