NO Match for Harriman/Schmidt

So their reasoning behind not letting this happen is the animosity between John and Danny.

Question for those that saw the first two matches.

How many times did each player attack the other, either verbally or physically? Were the matches great because of that (if anything did happen), or because you got to see two great players play some great pool.

A company like Str8Shots could be a great thing for pool, but you're bound to piss a few people off when you go against a proven entity such as TAR. Funny how CueTech didn't seem to mind this when Shane played Mike D. on TAR.

You can view battle #2 here on TAR PPV and find out first hand, rather than someone's memory (which may be flawed).

Allow me to translate the PR propaganda:

Str8 Shots is not paying John anything. His contract states he needs Kim's permission. The contract doesn't state she has to offset his opportunity revenue, just based on how she worded her post. The story about John donating it is nonsense.... she pays him and he donates it back to her - nets zero. Good PR on a forum, but utter nonsense to anyone with half a brain reading the post.

Sent from my Galaxy S4

i based my point of view based on these following facts.

1. i read the thread mark cantrill started where he announced he was going to work for str8shots.

2. i read kims 1st post on here and subsequent posts from her metioning what straights was and her intentions for her company.

so having some prior knowledge of what str8shots was and who was under their contract i came up with my point of view.

in your post #30 you basically admitted you and everyone else on planet earth have never heard of str8shots until now. with that being said can you explain to me " apparently someone with less than half a brain" how do you know what is in or not in the contract with john and how do you know for a fact she will not pay john.?

I'm not sure what is going on with this forum lately. It seems as if people are attacking others like a pack of wild animals, ripping a piece of their flesh with each post.

I try to keep up with what's happening in the industry, and so I do read the Main Page of AzBilliards for the pool news, as well as other pool-related websites.

Str8shots' mission or vision, if I may call it that, in pool is to not only help youth with scholarship monies, but they seem to have targeted pool players of all caliber: young, amateur, aspiring pros, and pros. They are going in a direction that is not related to action or gambling or "Who's the best?"

Here's a group who has put their money where their mouth is by hiring Mark Cantrell to help them disseminate their message. They continue to sponsor pros, most recently Jayson Shaw -- BEFORE his fine third-place finish at the recent Open.

As a sponsor, they do want to project an image that is in line with their mission. Smack talk and action, as much as I like it, is not a part of their agenda. I am positive that they desire players on their team that they pay with money, whether youth, amateur, aspiring pro, or pro, to follow the plan of this company. Action, one-on-one matches against two adversaries, isn't in line with this image. Mark, unfortunately, was not aware of the bad blood between John and Danny.

In recent times, more and more pool entities are washing their hands in American professional pool. Mark Griffin has announced he's not going to be hosting the pros in future events, except *maybe* a 16-player invitational. Joss/Turning Stone had to drop one of their events because of renovations at the casino. Greg Sullivan said there will never again be another Tunica. The Ultimate 10-Ball Challenge, not sure if we will ever see this one again due to the attendence.

Not so long ago, the Hilton Hotel representatives came to the U.S. Open 9-Ball Championship and said they wanted to create tour for American professional players. I was so excited, until I saw Charlie Williams, et al., of the UPA surround this man with a plan to suit the UPA. At the time, the UPA was quite controversial with the pool community, but they didn't give a damn. It was UPA's way or the highway. After two events with an EXTREMELY low turnout, one of which was scheduled in Pittsburgh at the EXACT SAME TIME as Joss/Turning Stone (won by Shawn Putnum in Pittsburgh), Hilton Hotels had seen enough and said, "Don't call us; we'll call you if we need you." That was the end of that. Can you imagine how cool pool would be today if Hilton had stayed on with a real tour?

Please let's not attack this Stra8Shots organization. They are trying to do some good in the pool world. If helping our youth with scholarship monies and aspiring pros compete in events and pros representing their organization is not your cup of tea, that's fine, but don't run these people out of pool, like the UPA did with Hilton Hotels.

I'm not sure what's going on with this forum in recent days. We could be in a time of remarkable change in this Anthropocene era of pool. Can we get to a point where we have a sustainable pool world on a longer term basis?

we have the same opinion but... you put it so much more eloquently.

It looks like they are an online Billiard and Dart retailer. They are a store like Seiberts, Hawleys, etc.

Seems like they are trying to find a niche in the market no one else is trying to attract and that would be junior players, hoping they might be long term customers? Smart? Could be.

They don't promote tournaments...they want to promote their store.

They really aren't doing much more than tons of pool room, bar owners and other retailers have done over the years. Sponsering teams, players, giving kids cues and such.

Wishing them success.

I perused their website and read the AzBilliards PRs on the Main Page. Here is one that caught my interest from September 28, 2013: Stra8Shots.com Proudly Sponsors the 2013 BEF Academic All-American Award.

It may not seem like a lot of money to some, but I think it's a great start for this new entrant into the pool industry.

Sponsoring aspiring pros is somethnig we need. In particular, I had Eleanor Callado on my radar a few years ago from a Vegas happening, and lo and behold, here she is getting sponsored today: Eleanor Callado is Newest Member to Team Str8 Shots

Str8 Shots has aligned themselves with others in the industry in an effort to promote pool via charity events: Annual Challenge the Stars Event Raised over $5,000 for the Billiard Education Foundation (BEF).

And then there is this heart-wrenching good deed Stra8 Shot is involved in: Jamaica Joe's, OB Cues, and Str8 Shots Team Together to Help Jaxon Saenz.

I think they are new to the pool scene, and as such, in an effort to stick with their mission, they are selective on what they want to be involved in, to include their sponsored players. If one of the sponsored players is not in agreement with Stra8 Shots' vision for the company, they probably can remove themselves from the sponsorship.

As you said, stevelomako, I, too, am wishing them much success. The pool world could use more people like this.

Exactly. Amazing how so many are so quick to run off at the mouth and condemn others just because they didn't get their little fix. Half of them posting wouldn't have watched it anyways. Let's forget about the hours of phone calls that were made, let's forget about someone else barging in trying to take over what they have stated they never wanted a part of again, let's forget about any actual facts. Just condemn because you didn't get your way. Like a bunch of kids throwing a tantrum. They aren't whats bad for pool. Many of the reactions on here are though. :(

i agree with you completely.

Ah the power of verbal contracts...are you sure John didn't say "just kidding" anytime during the discussion?

I was talking about leading up to the Shane Efren match. The draw of two pool legends paled in comparison to the hype this potential match is creating in just a day on the forum

The podcast the day before the match happened is the most viewed TAR podcast ever.

I think people were interested.

I dont know what Str8 shots is or what they do. I heard they were sponsoring some players by paying entry fees to events. If they have John under contract so be it. I think its weak sauce that another entity wants to come in and capitalize on a rivalry TAR made possible through the production of two previous events. There is a well documented history of TAR trying to get this third match to go so any other explanation is simply smoke and mirrors to cover up the fact they want to cut in on something TAR started.

I'm not really surprised though about the contract thing. I have always thought something like this would come to be eventually. I thought it would be with Bonus Ball but even as vocal as I have been about their missteps they never once pulled the contract card to prohibit one of their players from doing outside events.

Things like this happen every day in other sports. My mistake was trying to run TAR like someone who loves the game and wants to promote the players without controlling them. I have never claimed to be a good businessman and a good businessman would lock guys up. If this is the new landscape then TAR will adapt or get out just like any other business. Lots of others have tried to get into the "Challenge Match" game over the years from the IPT to InsidePool. So far we are still here so I like our chances.

I hold no ill will towards John as he is honoring a commitment he made and I respect that. Same goes for Danny if he decides to play. He has to pay his bills like everyone else and should take the money if he likes the deal. Str8 shots seems to think there is some big windfall to be had with this match. Maybe there is due to the history of the rivalry. The history that would not exist without the two previous productions.

I understand its just business. In the future I will treat it as such.

Thank you to everyone who has spoken up for TAR in this thread. I appreciate your support very much.

It's BS, it's not as much about the game..... Ifs about a dart dealer stepping over what the fans want to see. And I have seen many tantrums and these are justifiable

Anyone who says that this is simply about watching two great pool players play pool is
either full of it or completely delusional. This is about the drama. I admit I think it would
be fun to watch. It makes it more interesting -but don't suggest it's about people's pure love
for pool and just the desire to watch two players play a tiebreaker. There might be a few
people that this holds true for, but for the vast majority, this match carries the appeal of
a potential train-wreck drama festival. Why does this match get so much attention when
the Shane Efren draw hardly created a stir before the match?

It irks me how many people feel compelled to instantly voice negativity about an issue on
these forums. Not very many, if any of us, can say that we fully understand the details of
the situation. Some people might be in the know, but a huge amount of the people that pour
into these threads undoubtedly know nothing other than that they might not get to see a
potential train-wreck and they want to cry about it like a two year old. People admittedly
don't even know what str8t shots is but still trash it. I don't know what they are so I have
no opinion on them or their position on this match. Str8t shots might be good people; might
be bad people. I have no clue. They might be in it solely for financial gain and using
less admirable tactics to achieve it…or they might be someone who is actually doing
something for a sport that they would like to see change it’s colors, such a stance
would completely explain to myself why they would find it counter-productive to allow one
of their players to put himself in a situation where he might lose his cool and show his ass.
Let’s give them some time to make more than one post before they get attacked from all sides.

What I do have an opinion on is all the *****ing that comes in droves. Ask some questions.
That's the great thing about this forum is the spreading and sharing of information
-not attacking people whenever you see an opening. It comes across as pathetic. You’re
entitled to your opinion. I guess you could say this is all just my opinion. I greatly appreciate
the very generous members on here that are willing to share their knowledge. I’ve learned a
great deal from this forum. Sometimes I get a little uncomfortable reading a lava flow
of negative spew. I realize it’s inevitable. I’m not directing this towards anyone in particular,
but this one goes out to the many people that make this forum a less enjoyable place sometimes.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q1Fljqf7hy4&feature=player_detailpage#t=12.7

this place was very enjoyable to read when i 1st joined. i also have learned a lot from quite a few posters on here.

lately all the negativity has been rather stifling though.:(

In that contract it states that they will get permission from Str8 Shots management before engaging in activities, or aligning themselves, with individuals or activities that could be potentially harmful to their images, the company’s image, or the industry’s image.

Looks like you are violating your own policy, as this post is horrible for your image.

Coming from a sports promotion firm this is about the most counterproductive position one can imagine.

The very existence of a "rivalry" between two great players, or teams, is part of what drives interest and viewership in sports to new heights. Imagine a governing body or management stepping in to prevent a grudge match between Connors and McEnroe, Ali/Frazier, or even the final world series game following a dugout emptying brawl between the Yankees and Red Sox. These things would never happen, it would be though of as being absurd.

This is only a pool match between two world class players who truly dislike each other, so what?, rethink your position and let them settle their professional differences at the table as it should be.

Thank you. Jim

To this I'll add that a sports company which is fearful of a live match between two of the sport's best competitors and rivals, which is always viewed as a tremendous boost for any sport, may have to reassess their "business plan" and "marketing strategy".

Secondly, if I was either player I can't help feel as though I'd be greatly insulted at Ms Kimberly Griffiths' suggestion that I would be so totally unprofessional and lack such self-control that I would damage my own as well as my sponsor's reputation by my, apparently, ungentlemanly and crass behavior.

There has to be another, deeper, hidden agenda here. Hopefully it will surface.

Just checked it out and you're right -though I feel anything Efren Reyes on youtube tends to get a lot of hits...not exactly a translation into TAR purchases. I was more alluding to the overwhelming attention on the forum this game is getting compared to Shane Efren pre-match on the forum. I might be wrong...I don't know for sure. I think the only way to know for sure is for there to be a Danny John TAR and for Justin tell us which one got more purchases.

To be fair in your comparison, Efren and Shane weren't here on AZB firing away at each other.

John and Danny have done this forum thing. BIG time. Thus the added interest, or buzz, so far as AZB is concerned.

i do not think str8shots has any intention of trying to cut tar out of a ppv. i think they do not want john playing danny period after learning of the animosity between these 2 players.

Well said, and I agree.

fair assessment justadub and valid point. I am still curious which one would get more purchases though -even if the purchases from the potential Danny John match were inflated from the constant back and forth on the forum, it would still speak to the power of the draw for drama versus watching purely pool.

When I first read Mark's thread about the possible match-up, I thought the same thing, what's he thinking trying to capitalize and/or undermine what TAR has developed for a lack of a better term. What I find even more baffling is that Mark claims he had little idea of the history between these two players, it was and is well documented.

It's unfortunate the match will not take place, do I respect the decision by Str8 shots, the jury is still out.

Looking forward to the SVB vs Corey match, thanks again for allowing us the pleasure of watching TAR produced events.

Cheers.
