Bonus ball the truth

Muttonchops...Bonus Ball is not new...I saw it at a BCA trade show maybe 8-10 years ago, and thought it was weird then, as I do now. It's the concept of a live sport on tv that was new...and now even that apparently will not happen. Word is they're taping all matches, for release at a later date. That doesn't seem like it will fly, with the hard core players that would purchase PPV. JMO It is sad how they stiffed people, including Mr. Brett.

In fact if you go to the turney section here at Az it will tell you it's being taped
I thought it was not much live so I can't possibly see how it goes over being taped

Of course with it all being taped, they can edit the poop out of it....

That way we'd never see stuff like Earl/JJ...

Progress?

Mike Shamos had it listed in his encyclopedia in 1999.
Back then it was called "Bonus Ball 99"

No, I think you're confusing them with the BCA.

Roger

Roger, weren't you the guy who praised Bonus Ball and authored a piece declaring they had "made history"?

http://www.azbilliards.com/news/stories/10186-one-mans-opinion-bonus-ball-makes-history/

and then of course this one, "But on top of that they have shown real plans, real drive, and real dedication. And with all of those things going for them, I honestly believe that the rest of us are going to be in for one great ride".

He should have gotten a copy BEFORE he signed it.

No he should have his own copy - signed by himself and the representatives of Bonus Ball and a notary.

I have a bit of sympathy for Lee Brett but there also has to be the realization that he put himself in this position. And other actions (such as the contract not being in his hands) have made it worse.

yes, they are bad men, but at best they owe you 4 weeks pay...although didn't you say you signed something agreeing to accept balls as pay? I'm not even so sure there is any law that says they can't pay you in goods.

Most of these guys got their contracts via email. Printed them out signed them, scanned them and sent them back in. A lot was done thru email, I had to help one thru with his so I know.

I'm very surprised Lee does not have emails of all this.

Lee you're better off without bonus ball, like SVB, Alex, Mike, etc. It's a silly game that's never going anywhere.

And anyone with a brain knows why Michaela is the ref now, she's the eyes and ears for the new money.

As far as Johnny, Charlie, ABP, and all the Dragon goons they are not going to do anything, they wreck more havoc on pool then they do good.

Yes, I sure did. I visited the studio on more than one occasion. I met the owners. I met the players. I met the production crew. I met the referee. I learned the game. I liked the game. I purchased the full live stream package. And I enjoyed every minute of it. But I haven't enjoyed losing the money I've personally "invested" in this project, nor have I enjoyed seeing the direction it has taken since June.

I am definitely guilty (if you wish to call it that) of getting behind Bonus Ball. I did that because I thought pool could use a new boost, and I thought Bonus Ball had a chance of providing such. I am also guilty of believing the story that the owner and money backers for Bonus Ball had the funds to sustain the game as planned for at least two years - and were willing to do so. I was told that they realized it would take a while to sell the package to viewers and the media, but that they were committed to accomplishing just that. It now appears that those claims were totally untrue.

I feel very bad for Lee Brett and all the players. If there's new money behind Bonus Ball now, why couldn't they make things right with Lee before hiring a new referee? And why couldn't they honor their original agreement with the players, instead of cutting their per-match salary to 1/3 of what they were supposed to get?

I highly dislike lying and deceitful practices, and I've just been waiting until all the players can get paid for the current filming they are doing before saying anything on the subject; but Lee's thread has brought the problem to the forefront and made it time for me to explain my position in all this.

Thank you for forcing me out.

Roger

Roger don't sweat it, you are a good guy and support pool. Bonus ball will get whats coming to them, if they have been honest in their business, then they have nothing to worry about.

If i was them i would make things right while they can before they get them selves in a whole lot of trouble.

Lee,

Any idea what BB's plan was to turn a profit?

Or why, after saying publicly they had enough money to last two years (or seasons?) they quit after six weeks?

Or why they brought it back for the playoffs?

There is no playoffs right now. They are filming now to get more TV footage to hopefully sell to TV, this is Larry's last hope at getting this off the ground, if they do, then they will do the playoffs. More lies was said to me, like i am the ref, then told Michaela is doing the playoffs but can't commit to season 2 (Dave) then Larry says he won't give me my contract saying i am the ref and see how it goes with Michaela, they think they can do what they want, when they want.

I also think the investors would like to see where the proposed 2 million went, maybe when they investigate the company we will find out where it actually went.

Bonus Ball Money

I wonder what will happen at the end of the Year when the IRS wants their share of Tax Money ? Most likely there was no Taxes taken from the little bit of money that was paid to the players, but I could be wrong, as I only know what has been posted for us to see here.....

Players are independent contractors and are responsible for paying their own taxes.

The irs are now investigating them, also the labor department are as well for mis classification of employees. The players are apparently meant to be employees not contractors.

Employees? That would have a lot of implications. Federal and state tax withholding. State Unemployment Insurance deductions. Social Security tax deductions. Etc. etc. etc.

I doubt that employer, employee law is much different from Canada to the USA. Wording might be different but the intent is the same.

You can call your employee whatever name you like, they are still employees.

Contrary to belief, Rev Canada and the IRS employ people that are just a tad smarter than Chibbs and Co. There is such a thing as Labor Law.
Its there to protect people from people like Chibs that would love to take advantage of your services.

You can try and get away with it, and probably will, until you are reported.

His classification of employees as contractors or wording in the contracts most likely won't hold an ounce of water in court or the Labor Board.

The players signed a piece of paper saying that they were considered to be contractors. Doesn't make the piece of paper worth anything.

Funny that there was so much whining going on that Contractors took advantage of Larry at the start and essentially, he is no better.
He tried to take advantage of people that he called contractors.
Also funny how life works sometimes eh.

According to Nathan i will be the most hated man in pool after the IRS comes in, not my fault his boss is corrupt and not running his company legally, like i told Nathan he will be OK as long as he has Dave, Lenny Eric etc as employees also, since they work for him.

Bonus ball won't last anyways no matter if the IRS close them down or not, no one wants to watch it. But apparently it will be my fault if it fails, they all remind me of the cult leader (Larry) brainwashing them all. Some of the S**t they have said to me on facebook makes me laugh, Nathan after bonus ball you won't have a job in pool.

You are right and even if they are classified as "contractors" there are specific documentation (like 10-99s) that has to be distributed. From the stories about this group's attention to detail, this also may be a problem. There is no telling what is going on behind the scenes.

Lee, if they sponsored you for the green card, they were required to provide for your well being during your stay here. In addition, they may have been required to make you their employee. Don't post about these statements without checking with your lawyer about posting particulars on this site. Don't listen to anyone that tells you that if it's truth, you are OK to state it. Public written statements can complicate your case. In US, it isn't about the truth. It is about perceptions. So, if you say something that is meant to be truthful, but you accidentally word it wrong, lawyers will twist your words or phrases to suggest something that is not what you intended. Trust me, it is all about how it is articulated. Also, like UK, law has its own vocabulary.
