The document of our pool related road trip across the U.S. updated daily

You start feeling like your outrunning the nutz all the time the longer it goes.

The tables were the kind of diamonds that bounced like superballs. It was tough to play shape.

The guy i played in the final was a 5. He beat me 5-4 the first set.

I beat him the second set 11-4. I had to put on the boots for this one.

Bottom line is these tournys are great for pool. It fills up the home poolhall pretty good and really does give everyone a chance to win.

I heard 5 players there say to someone that they thought they were rated too low. They thought they had the nutz.

That's great. They will be back...............

Keep up the good work there Mr Shannon dalton.

8 years of doing this. Talk about giving back to the game. My hat is off to you for sure.

Thanks for the great tourny............and creating pool memories wherever you go for all us weekend gladiators.

Respect on this. I've seen some damn good players in a couple of these rated as 11's and struggle to hit that number against lower rated players. Winning this as an 11 is good shooting for sure.

+++++++++++++++ Very true and a good win for Gene! +++++++++

Alt. break on a bar box and giving 6 on the wire going to 11 is not "fun" at times LOL... basically you HAVE to win your break and wrestle a couple of theirs.. nice W and again all the best to you going forward Gene....

Sounds like you have been there before and thanks.........

Shannon said after the tourny that for an 11 to get through this you had to shoot some pool.

The difference here with winning or losing this thing was the medicine that I got about a week ago to control my siezures. I can actually get some good rem sleep because i didn't keep getting woke up all night long. My body wasn't hurting all over like it has for about the lest 7 months since the concussion.

With about 5 matches going hill hill I could make that one shot or get that one shape when it was a must.

This is 2 in a row. Not much but it is a start.

My mother just passed Saturday while i was playing in the tournament. Earlier in the week i told here that I had found out about the siezures and that I had already won a tournament and it was easy compared to before.

I told her that I was making all the shots again and felt real confident that I was going to win this tourny even though I knew how tough it would be.

I told her that I could actually read the license plates on cars again and the balls looked so clear again. I was blaming this on being diabetic when it was from some kind of tremors I seemed to be having all the time and the nocturnal siezures I was having at night.

She was really concerned about the siezures but I assured her that I felt so much better. I was so glad i finally found out why i was so wrecked everyday when I woke up and she told me how happy she was that the problem was being addressed and taken care of.

I even got on one of the PM's that someone sent me and told them that they heard it here first, that I was going to win this tourny.

I had an urgent thought to call my mother when I went out to the car to get a sandwich but had to get back in to play a match right away.

After the tourny my left shoulder was hurting and this was a hurt that I never had before. I'm sure it had something to do with her heart. She had a stint put in about 6 months ago.

My shoulder hasn't had that pain before or after that night.

I'm sure she knows that i came through with my word that I was going to win this thing. To many it wouldn't be such a big deal but to me it was huge.

Mom was the best. She never played a game of pool in her life but always loved hearing the stories.

Mom's all over are the greatest and their love is unconditional.

I am so proud to be your son.........................

success or failure?

Based on the bits I have read of this and the "On the road" thread, at what point would this venture be considered a success or failure, and by what measures?

This is not a temporary road trip at least that is not our intention. This is a journey where I am charged to learn all that I can from Gene until Gene is unable to play pool or give lessons anymore due to health reasons. Gene is preparing me for survival on my own.

This isn't like some old road stories where when a person got out of their town won a bunch of money then returned to their town a year or so later. This is a more permanent trip. Gene has been on the road living in motels for over 4 1/2 years only returning to Wisconsin for Christmas visits for a very brief time but not to stay more than a few days.

This adventure is already a success as Gene is able to earn more on the road than the expense of 2 people. Anything negative I do sets us back. Any positive contribution I make allows us to go forward. In fact if I do nothing at all we will continue to prosper but I feel I owe it to both of us to make some positive contributions any time the situation arrives.

I believe 2014 will be Gene's best year in his entire pool career. I have plans on encouraging him to enter every single sanctioned tournament along our path that would bring us the maximum potential income without interfering with his normal routines. We will still try to avoid smoking pool rooms. He will still be giving lessons. But in 2014 Gene is going to finish off the year with the highest tournament payouts he has ever achieved in any other year.

And action, Gene will be in plenty of action. He will be playing many people now that his game is on the rise again after finding out what was causing him to lose sleep for the last couple decades. Gene is now able to play better than he was back in his prime and with the help of his own Perfect Aim system, encouragement from me, and his solid discipline with keeping an eye on his health issues people are going to be in for a big surprise.

If your able to do anything in life you have a passion for I would call that a success. Success it's measured by how much money you make but how you make your money. I think Gene uses teaching as his main income. Which he has a passion for. I think Gene plays in tournaments to test himself and make some money if he can. I think Gene and Rhea gamble based on their income and cost of living. Plus what lessons they may have set up. Like everyone else on here who gamble. It's either based on your income or having a backer. So someone playing sets for $50 can mean just as much as someone playing for $5000. So in short if they have a roof over their head and can feed themselves doing what they love. I would call that a success.

Pool rooms offering 401k and 403b's these days?

Best wishes Gene! Sorry about your Mother. Know that she will always be with you!

Great observation

I believe this statement is soooo true - in all walks of life. This is a very good post!

My condolences to Gene over the loss of his Mom!

The trip in the morning is 17hr42 mins, we will probably make it about halfway to WI by Midnight tomorrow night which will put us in Indinapolis, IN then hopefully go the rest of the way by Midnight the following night.
