DVD Review- CJ Wiley's Million Dollars Challenge

Earl trained to run those racks....he has it down to a science

Earl: "So I practice and think @ it for two months. I'm thinking @ it wondering if it's possible (to run 10 for a million).... I'd practice and would run 4 or 5. I then started cleaning the balls after every rack, I realize that ANY debris on the balls or on the table was the key to it. I started running more racks. Made an 8 run. ANY little debris would hurt my runs. I'd wash a big towell, over and over, so there was no lint for my opponent to take exception to. Debris, chalk, powder, humidity could stop a corner ball from going in."

History...

Can you believe how Earl trained to run those racks....he has it down to a science and shares every aspect of how he did it......at this point I'm pretty sure he knows more about "running a rack" than any living human.

We're lucky to be here today - between the guns, knives, tush hogs, and wives.

When they let Geno and his perfect aim sell through a blog on the main forum through a blog, I gave up *****ing about it. Yes CJ is long winded, but he gives out and sells good info that every level can find useful. Johnnyt

Thanks, Johnny, back in the gambling days it was necessary to be "long winded".....that's why I like "ahead sets" rather than races. I've always been "slow out of the gate," but so were a lot of us back in those days.......we just needed time to warm up. Of course it was common to play 12+ hours to "get the cash" - "breaking even" was not acceptable.

I know you're "old school" and have been around the gambling block a time or two. We're all lucky to make it through those days, between the guns, knives, tush hogs, and wives.

Have a Save/Happy New Year, and I hope 2014 is a Blessing to You and Yours.

Aloha, and Play Well

I just watched it. Wow. What a piece of history and well done. Its definitely worth the money; if you haven't got it yet you owe it to yourself to get it. Some very interesting points in it.

Happy New Year CJ.. and more power to you...

...I think about all the talk in the pool world about pro pool players not being able to make a decent living, how they are short-sighted and incapable of thinking beyond today; how most of them end up being broke with no prospects for the future, etc. etc.

...and here we have C.J., who is one of the top pros who has actually made an effort to make a living beyond shooting at those little balls, and then you get these jerks who criticize his marketing, etc. What a world the pool world is......sometimes it gets a bit disgusting....I can see why JAM says some of the things she says....

As for me, I feel lucky that C.J. chooses to take all the garbage and flak,
let it roll off his back, and stay around this jumbled menagerie of yakety yaks......Happy New Year, C.J. thanks for being you and stay strong....

This documentary is just great!! I can't see how you could have done a better job CJ. The interviews were intelligent and bring everyone who was not there right into this moment in time, beautifully. It is a great detailed description of what Earl did and exactly what happened. The interviews in general were wonderful and the ones with Earl, really put his passion and brilliance on display!! Some people just like to write Earl off as a wingnut. You can clearly see that is not the case.

Earl Strickland is an expert at conditions of the table, he stays in top physical condition which gives him maximum opportunity to do great things, and he is as smart as you can be, when it comes to pool.. I'm not going to sit here and say the wheels don't come off at times when he's in competition, but away from the table you can clearly see, he is a brilliant man!! Thank you CJ for this EPIC account of one of the greatest feats ever displayed in pool!! Nicely Done:thumbup:

Happy New Year to you Bud, I appreciate your candidness

Thanks, Happy New Year to you Bud, I appreciate you taking the time to communicate your thoughts, makes it all worth while......there's some great stuff on AzBilliards!!!

I was told at the very beginning this forum was exactly like any pool hall EXCEPT......a few slight differences  .......it's been a great "lesson" - 'The Game is the Teacher'

She's got a plethora of skirts that's for sure. She also has all kinds of hats that she likes to wear. Her new Santa Claus hat went over really well, she wore it out every night around Christmas. I told people "she wears it "EVERY" night except Christmas" - Mary is quite the character, she got a dose of the flu the last few days, but she's better today.

Happy New Year KK9L.....Hope 2014 is the Best One Yet for You and Yours. :D

I have heard that Mary Avina had a lot of input into the Million Dollar Challenge video. I just wanted to say thanks Mary for helping bring us this excellent documentary!! Have a Happy and Blessed New Year....Hope you feel better soon....

Wondering if the DVD explains as to why there was a 2 year court battle for Earl to collect the prize money, if it was won fair and square.

Court battles Are the Teacher.

That reminded me of casinos claiming a glitch when someone hits the jackpot on a slot machine.

I'm glad Earl got paid but it seems he made a mistake taking the lump sum.

Nice Mike, you just made another hater post.

Right! It's amazing what child psychology and guilt can do. Here's the first snipe from hater #1. Who's #2? It'll be much easier to identify the group if we number them.

Best,
Mike

Mike, why is it that anyone that disagree with you is labeled a "hater"? And, I didn't make a "snipe", I made an observation and pointed it out to you. Apparently you missed it, so I will spell it out for you. YOU are the one bringing hate into this. Others are not allowed to make observations or comments unless YOU agree with them, and if they dare do so, you will start your childish "hate" campaigns to denigrate them, and probably contact Wilson also, like you have in the past, in an attempt to get anyone banned that you disagree with.

Why not start the new year with the acceptance of other opinions. You want to comment on them, fine, but quit bringing out the "hate" card and trying to incite others to get people banned.

Wrong, again! I've never contacted Wilson, never reported a post, never put anybody on ignore and never will. You, on the other hand, have turned into an OCD CJ stalker and know it all.

You constantly correct everybody on these forums and stymie discussion because you are the resident curmudgeon. You've been warned and banned because you harbor ill will and enmity towards certain people and their discussions.

Your weak attempt at deflection of your constant badgering by calling me a hater is very pathetic along with the insinuation of me being a tattle tail. I must have hit a nerve because you're really grasping at straws, now. You took a page out of PJ's book on how to confuse and misdirect attention away from yourself in a discussion while you constantly stick your fingers in the cage.

The shoe fits. Wear it!

Best,
Mike

Just because you make crap up, doesn't make it true. You need help. Please put me on ignore. Maybe then you will stop stalking me.

edit: I Made one loittle comment, others made long posts, why pick on just me? Because you are a hater, that's why. Have a nice day. I'm through responding to you. Your one goal on here is to suck up to a pro because you know you will never be one. Go enjoy yourself.

Neil you have consistently displayed a sour and generally poor attitude for the many *years* I've read your posts. You get particularly defensive whenever the conversation turns to instruction or instructors. I really don't know why you choose to present yourself this way. Its a shame because you occasionally have informative posts. When someone says something you believe is factually wrong, you have a tendency to point it out in a very condescending way, often involving name calling and insult. You probably don't think this is the case. That's too bad...but I suppose we can all work on the accuracy of our self observation. That's fine...criticism can be very hard to take. Just remember, for no man is 100% of what they think is true *actually* true. We are ALL wrong and misinformed sometimes.

In any case, I don't hate you or even dislike you. I just hope maybe in 2014 you can be a little nicer. Consider this friendly advice. Nothing more or less. I hope I haven't offended you. I mean, if, for example, CJ is factually wrong, or going too heavy on the promotion stuff...is it beyond you to just say "who cares" and ignore it? If you are somehow trying to *help* CJ, well I guess that's a different story. It sure doesn't come across that way though. I am trying to *help* you.

Happy New Year. Best in 2014!

Ok, back to the DVD:

I had a chance to view this earlier today. I have looked forward to this for awhile as I am an Earl fan. I was not disappointed, this is a great story of many facets of this great feat. The number one thing I wondered about is the atmosphere in the room while this was happening. The whole idea of putting this carrot (run 10 for a million) out there was genius, all of a sudden the best players had something to shoot for that had a big payoff, even if it was the longest of shots.

Max Eberle calls it the most exciting thing he's experienced in pool. The anticipation during this run was electric. All of the 'players' are interviewed. This DVD is a great piece of work and reveals all of the details surrounding the million dollar run. Thanks to C.J. and Mary for making this available. It's a must see, IMO.

Well based on the reviews posted so far, and also being an Earl fan, I guess I better get this thing!!

how important (according to Earl) the "dew point" is to running racks

Earl was very eloquent in his descriptions of how he evaluates table conditions, atmosphere and how they relate to friction on the pool table. I learned a lot interviewing Earl and incorporated some of his technical advice into my own game. At some level we're all still learning "if we're not getting better, we're probably getting worse".

I was not aware of how important (according to Earl) the "dew point" is to running racks.....'The Game is the Teacher'

Why, gee, maybe it's because many come on here to actually learn something about pool and not just to kill time wihile at work. Those people have deserved to get actual factual information. Not all the crap some spew on here.

Condescending? Yeah, to those that give it to me first. I can give just as good as I get, and some of you can't handle getting it back the way you give it to others.

Too many on here have driven off all the people that actually helped people on here, and I tried in vain to change things on here to keep the good people. Foolish endeavor on my part. Too many on here don't want help, dont want the truth. Just want to kill time at work. The knowledgeable people that are still here rarely post anymore because of all the crap they get. I will be in the same boat from now on.

The only times I am condescending is to those that have given it to me first. I don't take their crap, I give it right back to them, and they can't handle it so they start crying about me all the time. I really don't care anymore. You guys don't want help from those that actually know what they are talking about. You've driven off almost all of them. And the few left rarely post anymore.

As far as CJ goes, I went out of my way to be nice to him until he started with the insults and name calling. He can KMA. He is nothing more than a huge egotist playing all of you with all his marketing of pure crap. Be sure to eat it all up. Not a single qualified instructor thinks he has a clue what he is talking about.

That's my end rant. Enjoy yourselves. I'll rarely be here anymore.

Too many of you don't want factual instruction, you guys even set Stan off on a rant the other day. And he's as mild mannered as they come. Strange how this place constantly makes fun of the good people on here, and worships those that deserve scorn.

Maybe some of you should just look in a mirror and ask what you have done to drive all the good people away instead of jumping on me for not taking the crap and giving it back.

In ending, I have always taken pride in only posting factual info on here. Did what I could to help those that wanted it. Rarely have I stated anything that wasn't true. And when I did so, I corrected it. Rarely have I posted only my opinion on anything pool related, but passed on tested info known to be true. For that I get crapped on. Enjoy what you have left on here, it isn't much anymore.

Thanks,... we are grateful to you, itsfroze, and everyone on this forum

Lots of good reviews, job well done C.J..
Wishing you a Happy New Year !

Thanks,... we are grateful to you, itsfroze, and everyone on this forum (even SHD) for contributing to our creativity, production, and entertainment in 2013.....it was an "uphill" climb at times, but in the end it all was worthwhile.

We started on the Documentary over 17 months ago and it was an arduous process putting it together (Mary Avina did the job of several people). We were fortunate to catch Earl in a unparallelled frame of mind, it's apparent in the interview that he's genius "mad genius" (Jay Helfert), but genius none the less. 'The Game is the Teacher'
