john schmidt 240+ run with player commentary

Nice. John tries to make a buck by putting this together and people watch it for free.

We all know John is a great straight pool player .In my opinion his DVD (How I run the 100's) is the best money I have ever spent .If you want your 14.1 to get better BUY THIS DVD !
Note to John I want nothing for this endorcment LOL !

Picture Quality

This has been on YouTube for years...I had no idea this was ever on DVD..the quality of the picture is grainy, I think John talks about it in the video itself...haven't watched it in a while. Would be surprised if this picture quality high run was put up for sale.

I am not sure what you are saying. You don't believe the run was put up for sale or you think the quality of the youtube video is not the same as the quality of the video?
Or did you mean that since it has been on youtube for years and since the quality may not appear to be that good, we should not feel guilty about viewing the pirated version rather than purchasing the version that is for sale?

It was put up for sale after he added the commentary to his video of the run. It still can be bought. It is for sale right here: http://caromtube.blogspot.com/p/videos.html.

I imagine the one on youtube was a copy of a copy and might have lost a bit of quality.

It was uploaded 3 1/2 years ago, way before I even joined this forum. It has had almost 20,000 views already. I've seen it several times and was totally unaware it was originally for sale from John. I would have experienced buyer's remorse if I had bought it.

First of all, I didn't care for John's commentary on his own run. There was some insight into his thinking, but I would have learned more if Blackjack commentated on it. He's the best at commentating 14.1 I've watched so far. Aside from the initial viewing, all subsequent viewings I've done were with the sound off.

Second, the video quality just plain sucked. I think I remembered John apologizing for it right during the commentary, not even knowing which ball was which as he called the shots. That's not a copy problem, it's a recording and post-production problem.

If I stumble upon a video that someone illegally uploaded and watch it I shouldn't have to feel any pangs of guilt. If it makes you feel better, I'll never watch it again. With that poor quality I sure won't be purchasing it at any price. Plenty of quality Accu-Stats productions to spend my money on... or Danny's big run if that is out now.

BTW I have nothing against John. I think he is a very special player, a real 14.1 treasure. :)

I went to that site and saw there's another of John's DVDs for sale with an even higher run. I'll consider buying that if that seems the right thing to do now. I'll have to give it some serious thought.

what bugs me, and this billiar9 guy is one of them, is putting accu-stats stuff on youtube. I don't know why more of it isn't deleted. We need to be supporting the releases not exploiting them.

Can't you just report this stuff to YouTube somehow? I know there are other things I've watched that may be illegally posted, but it would be hard to know. With the Accu-Stats stuff it's pretty obvious, but it really hard to tell which stuff is being offered for sale and which stuff is free, like the Inside Pool videos. And in the case of John's video I just assumed he had somebody put it up. Without this site I would never have found otherwise.

I agree it's not right, but it's hard to stop. Kids today are stealing and sharing everything these days, especially using bit torrent apps. They seem to have lost their way and don't feel any of it is wrong.

Yes, you can have a copyrighted video taken down, but I don't know what hoops you have to jump through, like to prove you are the copyright holder for instance. But I had some business with a company and this is precisely what they did, scour the internet for the copyrighted material of their customers (movie studios, TV networks, production companies, etc.) and have it deleted.

We are all so spoiled these days by the higher quality of videos available and the many straight pool runs that are available both for free and for money. Back when John did this dvd, we straight pool nuts were starved for content. There was nothing much available since the 2000 US Open. We heard rumblings about this kid in Germany named Thorsten who was running big numbers and we had also heard about this American kid who had run 400. When we heard that he had video'd a 245 ball run and told us what he was doing and why, we thought we had died and gone to heaven, picture quality or not.

John's 400, this video, Charlie Williams revival of the World Tournament, and Bob Jewett's generous funding and sponsoring of the Derby City Straight Pool Challenge, all helped to put Straight Pool somewhat on the Map in this country.

Anyway, I'm sure John knows its on youtube and there is not much you can do about it, but my gut reaction is to help support the guys that help support our sport.

I would chip in a few dollars if someone were to open something like a donation fund for John. If we encourage him maybe he'll make another video with commentary while playing like he did once before.

If you read some of the earlier posts you will see he is selling some runs with commentary. This is your chance to get one and have a guilt free mind. That is my plan.

A few years ago a friend asked me to put up some videos of her and her friends doing freestyle canoeing because she didn't know how. They sat there on my YT channel for a long time with little interest until one day one of them went viral. Turns out Tosh.0 found them, thought they were a good topic to parody, and put one of them up on the show.
No request, no alert, no nothing. Just grabbed it for free and profited from it.

This was followed months later by The Colbert Report doing the same thing. In the meantime, Google AdSense contacted me about earning revenue from them by allowing them to link ads to them. Since I neither owned them, made them, nor had been given permission to use them for commercial purposes, I politely declined.

Since then I have had several requests from small indie TV shows asking if I would give them permission to use them on their shows. Seems the little guys know enough to ask, but the big dogs just push everybody aside to feed at the trough like the pigs they are.

I've purchased some of his past videos already, but good point.

Thanks for posting that--thanks to John for the excellent run--The wife had to come back and see why I was talking to myself and caught what was going on and stated,,you talk to yourself downstairs when your playing--do all players do that?
