With Mike up 12-3, I opted for bed. Earl, quite obviously, had no shot. Despite the tough table, Mike wasn't missing much and Earl was.
The match was as lopsided on the pool table as it was on paper.
After all, in the last six American 9/10 ball events having a huge and internationally diverse field (omitting anything in which neither played), here's how it went.
DCC 9-ball 2013: Mike 3rd, Earl did not play
Players 2013: Mike 9th, Earl 17th
Ultimate 10-ball: Mike 7th, Earl did not play
US Open 10-ball: Mike 7th Earl 25th
US Open 9-ball: Mike 9th, Earl 33rd
DCC 9-ball 2014: Mike 6th, Earl 30th
In short, when the chips are down in the big events , Earl pretty much never
outperforms Mike. Earl is still a very highly skilled player but he isn't in Mike's league and his results prove it over and over.
