God is not going to help you win your match!

The reason I bring this up is that I've seen so many players yell that it's not fair, I've put so much into it, and still I'm not winning. I've seen them actually scream into the ceiling
cussing God, or whatever devine being they believe in for their misfortune, like they're OWED something for all their hard work.I'm not saying there is no God, I believe in him with all my heart, but he is not going to help you win your match. It is only you and your opponent in the game, and knowing that God is not going to help you is good thing, why? Because he is not going to help your opponent either. He is not going to help you make a shot, and he is not going to cause you to miss a shot. It is you, and only you doing this, and the sooner that some players learn this the better off they will be....practice will get you there, not God!
 
Invoking the will of the lord is nothing in pool compared to other sports. How many times have you heard a boxer thank G-d for his victory right after he's pummeled his opponent into unconsciousness? Hear a lot of "prayer" with other major sports as well, pre and post competition. Who really thinks G-d cares who wins the Superbowl?
 
God doesn't dictate who wins but God did put us in this world for failure or success.

Perhaps, they are blaming God for their existence?
 
Apparently they haven't heard of the Pool Gods.

Altho they do exist, they don't hang around me much.
 
Win or lose

While he may not help you win.....he can certainly help you deal with a loss.

Years ago, a pro fisherman who preached the word of the lord, lost a big tournament by a few ounces. Someone made a sarcastic remark saying, "Looks like God didn't help you win today." To which he replied, "Yes, but he will always be there to comfort me in the loss."

Something I always remembered through the years when I hear people thank or curse at the Lord.
 
Great thread. God certainly helps when things don't go the way we would like. Also, God can and does use the loss to teach us other things which are way more important; like sportsmanship, humility, and priorities,

Exactly Hog. I've never seen someone mention God, but we all speak to the pool gods... notice the small "g"... just goofing around. When you don't get the rolls, the pool gods are messing with ya again... that's all. nothing to get all riled up about :rolleyes:
 
Reminds me of back in the day (i.e. about 17 years ago when I first started playing pool at the age of 17) that I decided to create the email address poolgod@hotmail.com

I was amazed it wasn't taken as those common ones usually you need to add a number or something to it...so, even though I rarely check it that is totally MY email address lol.

I'm not so sure I agree. I have seen somethings happen on the table that (seemingly) can only be explained by divine intervention - we all have.
I think it's more a question of faith. It's like Crash Davis said, "If you think you're winning because you're wearing women's underwear, then you are."
If you have faith, if you believe that a little prayer is helpful, then it is. We talk so much about preshot routine, it's importance, I know players that between each shot they ask God for help, they believe it helps. So, what if an acknowledgment of God and Heaven is a part of your preshot routine?
As far as missing a shot, well, God is a convenient target - "I would have never missed that shot, God must be on your side today."
I think that if you believe that God is present and rolling the balls one way or another, well, why not? Why wouldn't a prayer help? If you have a long ridiculous shot on the nine and before you approach the table you look up and say "a little help, please..." do you know for a fact that isn't helpful? Neither do I. But I do know one thing - If God is a pool player and if all he's doing is waiting for you to ask for help, then a little prayer never hurts.

The same God who doesn't stop a bullet that hits a little girl by a drive by shooter. I would not expect him to care much about a pool game.

It clearly states they can help you win games but championships have to be won on there own.:confused:

personally, i have played in places that God or the gods didn't dare enter. sometimes i wonder why i was there myself, but i'm pretty sure when i did enter those places I was on my own.

as for pool gods, i believe these troublemakers are on the same level as pesky creatures that don't determine the outcome of a match, but they do throwup road blocks and such. also, pool gods could care less who you pray, too.
 
When I win, I thank God. I am not thanking Him for sabotaging my opponents play, but am thanking Him for all He has done for me in the past to enable me to score a win. The access to knowledge that I didn't have before, the dedication to practice, the proper mental temperament that one needs to win, the ability to recognize my own shortcomings and not blame the "pool gods" so I could work on them, ect. For putting in my path the things I would need to be able to elevate my game enough to win. And, yes, that also includes the many losses I had to learn to deal with to improve.

Maybe he was with you and that is the reason you made it out of those places!

Makes me wonder if God did reply to this thread what he would exactly say.

From my understanding God is the inventor of everything,

I got 20 bucks says he shoots a olive wood plain Jane with a solid old growth shaft :thumbup:
