Self policing the forum-Good or bad?

Based on the flow of this forum there should be a good dozen or so mods. Usually there's an application process. Its voluntary but I'm sure there would be no shortage of people willing to lend their time especially with so many daily readers here.

The Wanted/For Sale forum is in desperate need of 2-3 mods. Its too much for just one person.

Good idea but I thing the main forum needs a couple more all so.

I understand what you are saying, but how do you complain about people breaking the rules, by starting a thread that breaks the rules.

I'm a little confused is it only alright when you break the rules.

Can i ask you, what rules is he breaking to be exact?

When I see a forum cop's item get bumped to page 176 in 5 minutes, it's like......

As some of you know, along with a lot of others here, I have taken the approach of trying to self police the forum. Obvioulsy, we are not Mods but when we see a rules violation we step up and let people know that they have not followed the rules. Usually it's new members that haven't bothered to actually read the rules so a polite pm with a link to the rules (highlighting the rule that is applicable) is uaually all it takes for them and they understand. Usually they reply and apologize and everything is good from then on.

Other times, it's not so simple. Occasionally when I send someone that polite pm, I'm greeted with a reply filled with profanity and insults. I'm always amused by this as if I'm the one breaking the rules and being discourteous to the other members. It's funny, the last several times I've received this response, the new member ends up getting banned shortly there after. Lol!

When it's a long standing member it's a different animal entirely. They certainly don't want to admit they are being rude and ignoring the rules even if they are. Instead they try and turn the tables and act like we are the one's doing something wrong by pointing it out. Sorry, but that redirection doesn't work with me. Just buck up and admit you made a mistake and/or if you are continually ignoring the rules why not try to be a little more courteous to your fellow members and just follow the rules. While it's not as serious here on an internet forum, in civilized society the people who break the rules are called criminals. Why is it we shouldn't expect our members to act civilized here?

Anyway, recently I have had the opportunity to learn that the "report post" link at the bottom of the page does...... NOTHING. It doesn't go to a moderator but instead it goes to a generic mailbox that is not monitored. Additionally, one of the mods informed me he has "less than 10 minutes a day" to police the forums.

So with that in mind I ask you, isn't it our responsibility to self police the forum if we want it to run smoothly. The reason I'm asking is because recently there have been a lot of members acting like they are above the rules and obviously without moderation this will continue. If we want to keep this forum running smoothly I believe it's up to everyone to let people know when they have done something wrong. That being said, I don't think everyone should bombard a member because they violated the rules once. Of course people make mistakes and bump in the WFS section a little early. I'm referring to the members where this has become a pattern and who continually ignore the rules or to help a new member out by informing them of the rules in case they didn't read them.

And before you hit that reply button please try and remember that the rules are in place for a reason. The forum would be chaos without them.

Please reply with your opinion.

Do you go into everyone's business and tell them how to do it. Do me and probably others a favor, and go start you own forum. I am really getting sick of going through these stupid posts to find something about pool.

Why not just become a moderator? It is volunteer position, correct?

If you've been as conscientious and polite as you've said, I suspect management would love to have you as a moderator.

I agree with your basic premise about a site needing rules and rule enforcement, but it gets sticky when unauthorized people correct other members.

I don't think we need more laws and more cops.....
....we need more posters who moderate themselves.

If you've made a post that makes you cringe later on....
....there's the problem.

not that I've ever done it....:embarrassed2:

Yeah self-moderation should mean just that, guys policing themselves with common sense.

Instead we have a few guys trying to hit us over the heads with their INTERPRETATIONS of the rules, or what they feel the rules should be.

The reason the report buttons don't work for them is the stuff they are reporting is not against the rules and thus the mods are ignoring them.

I find it incredibly annoying personally. I don't mind someone pointing out the rules to new posters. But playing mod when you aren't one is annoying as hell to me.

I also believe, that if they want more moderators the people in charge, the owners of the forum would ask. If they haven't asked then you should probably not try and pretend to be one.

Touché 😎

Why am I the Colonel? Because I always get the chicken

I think this is where some of us are getting confused. I don't send condescending emails to correct their behavior, per se. It's sent more of a "heads up" thing before they get banned or their threads are removed.

Wow!

So when people are so upset with you they use profanity, you think it is amusing?
When they''re actually banned from the forum you 'Laugh out Loud'? Lol
When they point out that you have no right, not being a MOD, to tell them what to
do you have a name for it...redirection
You compare members to being criminals?

Wow, nothing like trying to twist my words around.

Yeah, I laugh when I send someone a nice polite email and they reply like a complete douche and swear at me and call me names. What am I supposed to do? They are overreacting and probably know what they are doing is wrong so rather than accept it, they try and redirect it by using profanity.

And again, yeah, when someone acts like a complete douche after I've sent them a polite email I do think it's a bit amusing when their actions catch up to them. If their response was proportioned rather than using threats and profanity, I would probably feel bad if they were banned. Which btw, is why I sent the email to begin with.

The criminals was just a way of trying to make a point. But like some other members you have failed to understand.

Why is is so hard for some of you to see that I'm only trying to help. You guys act as though I'm trying to make trouble. Just because you don't give a shit about anyone other than yourself, don't think I don't. I would much prefer to see this forum have twice as many members as it does and have everyone get along. Unfortunately, there are too many bad apples that don't give a shit for that to happen.

Sure you can, posts on this forum are supposed to be pool related not rule related
There is a forum where posts can be about anything, that's NPR (Non Pool Related)
seems his post would fit in fine there, being not related to Pool.

Hope that answers your question.

It does. Thanks.
However, this IS POOL RELATED.
Per your comment - rules related....Rules of what?

You know what, I'm tired of trying to help people. Just forget I posted this thread. It's become glaringly obvious the people who don't follow the rules don't care and certainly do not want anyone telling them so.

I'm sorry that asking for some courtesy towards your fellow human beings is apparently asking too much.

You asked if people thought it was good or bad. Don't get mad when people answer your question just because you don't agree with their answer.

Talking about people breaking the rules, no matter how you would like
to spin it, is not Pool related.

I wouldn't even say anything, except the person complaining about people
thinking they are above the rules, is doing the same thing he is complaining about.
