How special Efren is

Another is Efren vs Billy Palmer.. not only the 2 off the nipple shots but he Efren really plays awesome one pocket that match

Someone gave me this DVD way back when I didn't have internet and I must have watched it over 200 times by now. It's literally in my DVD drive on this laptop right now while I'm away from home. If you can get over DD talking down about Billy Palmer it turns out to be a great match. Even game three, which turns into a wedge game. It's from the DCC 2004 in case anyone is wondering. I highly recommend this to anyone who can sit through long 1p matches like I can.

What I was remarking on with Deuel is his creativity, cue ball control, general talent. But yes, he's unorthodox and might not see the statistics as conventional players do. Yet, he is very often the last 4-8 people in DCC etc. Go figure.

Ain't no need to go figure. Game is to 8 in your hole.

The game has changed...as evidenced by the fact that newcomers to the game like svb/ orcullo/ daz can be considered top level players.

8 and out: best move ever.

Most of us agree that he was, at times, even beyond description. Of course he's had some highlight moments--big stroke shots, the Sands kick-win, the color of money come back. But I suspect we've all shared a sublime and delicious 20+ years of witnessing the greatest pool genius of all.

Even today, when there are more people then even immediately after the Color of Money up-tick; there's just hundreds of good players. But that's the thing that makes me a little disheartened. None move the balls like he did. And none systematically or more consistently showed me that they saw a more simple means of accomplishing a more efficient/high percentage solution.

Mark Wilson calls him a great man--and I agree. He fights like pacquiao within the match but is modesty enough to show how sever the pressure he imposes on himself to perform and perform he's done.

It actually pains me to say that he's undeniably not the certainty he was. He doesn't have the endurance he did. Father time has taken his toll. There are players whom I still like watching, but it's not the same. Shannon is smart, heady, moves the cue ball beautifully. Shane, Deuel, Schmidt, Alex...versatile players...ALL GAMES. Intelligent.

Alex has his composure, but not his pace.
Shane has his former execution, but not his pool IQ (though it's pretty close.)
Deuel is close, but I don't think he has his fortitude (but I may be ignorant).
Schmidt is great but won't fight till the last ball sometimes if he gets down on himself.

But in the end-all-be-all game of one pocket, managing multiple balls, covering balls, taking scratches, thinning off things, billiarding for safeties, playing the count, getting behind balls in close proximity--Efren was especially entertaining to watch. And his attitude was icing on the cake.

Does anyone have players they'd suggest I watch who'd be remotely as entertaining as him?

And more importantly, does anyone have any old time videos of early Efren (1995, etc).../

Mike Sigel is a clear choice as both entertaining and being the one of the best players (if not the best) at the peak of his game...not a one pocket guy if thats your main game of choice...but a great straight pool player and shotmaker in rotation games which he dominated even with a weak break...with a ridiculous amount of titles.

Sigel`s break was anything but weak... SVB modeled his break after Sigels

Don't just watch that match. Buy/rent/borrow all of the Efren 1p matches from that year. I forgot the order of play in the final few rounds, but Efren played Parica, Pagulayan and someone else world class and absolutely destroyed them. I mean the gap in play was like between an A+ and B player, they were completely helpless.

I have that DVD [Reyes/Pagulayan (Semi's) & Reyes/Miller (Finals)], and Alex's reactions to the things Efren did to him on the table were priceless. And the final, well Billy Incardona was saying, how bad could Jason Miller really feel - no one on the planet could have beat Efren that day.

Efren is the greatest all around player I've ever watched. I've watched all the greats from the 70's on up. There are many great players but Efren has that something special that other players didn't have. What's scary is Efren said he played his best pool in the 70's!!! Imagine if they had modern video back then, guarantee you would see some sick stuff!!! Busty talks about him spotting him 46 points in rotation and said "I couldn't win a single game" how strong is that

Efren had to learn three cushion in order to get action during the 70's. Nobody wanted to mess around with him during those years; he even retired a known player named "Boy Quiapo". He offered to spot the other guy some points playing rotation; the dude felt insulted and swore that he would play Efren even.

The caveat was, he will retire from playing pool if Efren beats him! Efren spanked him and Boy Quiapo, true to his word, retired from playing pool.

He was truly amazing during that decade...

Efren is as special as they come. Not only is he the best player of all time, but he is one of the best people I have ever met. He give more to others then most people will ever know about and he is great to be around.
I feel lucky to have been abel to be at his birthday party a couple times and just be able to sit around and play cards with him.
Playing him one pocket is something I will never forget and hope to be able to do again. Best $80 donation I have ever made.

To tell you what I think about Efren, I have 2 pictures on my dresser. One is my grandparents and the other is of Efren and I at his birthday party at Shooters Riverside about 10 years ago.

When Mt. Pinatubo erupted years ago, Efren was on the frontline in giving aid to the victims of the volcano. He donated his own money and resources without asking for acknowledgement Yeah, I was fortunate enough to mess around with him during my college days. You know, when you're young and stupid. I thought I was a bad ass in pool till I started messing around with Efren. Learned a lot from him while he was kicking my butt!!

Crazy thing is, if you ask him today what his best game was... "balkline"

Not that this is him at his best...but it reiterates where he learned some of his cuemanship.

In the department of beautiful strokes, I think Stalev is right up there with top candidates. Exquisite.

Just encountered a young Fillappino woman. Asked her if she knew who Efren reyes
Is? She beamed a big smile and said "Bata"! Had great things to say. Incidently she
said Paqiao needed to stick to boxing and leave politics.

I count tell you how many times this has happened. Efren is a national treasure in the PI. They hold planes for him for gosh sake. He has done a lot for a lot of people, he just doesn`t advertise it.
I have gotten the same reaction about Bustamante a few times also.

He told me that Efren did things with the cue ball that he had never seen before and did not know were possible.

That was the impression I got watching him gamble in the practice room after the BC Open was over for the day in 1985. When I went home I had to pick my jaw up off the floor.

I'm wondering if anyone has very very old matches with Efren. I'd pay for them...and also have a few old matches myself...probably 150 or so--and some of them of people like george breadlove and mark tadd.

Old Efren videos anyone?

earl the pearl

Earl Strickland 5 us open titles that says it all one of the greatest players of all time, when he wants to play he's unbelievable but than his head starts to act up why does he do this .

I've seen a lot of great players in the last 50 years, but Efren is indeed a special kind of pool player. More creative, more imaginative and always ready to execute any shot under any circumstances. He elevated the game of One Pocket to a new level and made it look like the game was invented just for him!

He handles pressure as well as anyone and is never out of match. He has won from no where many times, just when you thought he was finished. He's made a zillion comebacks already in his career, the Manny Pacquiao of pool.

Through it all he remains gracious and humble, never once boasting about his greatness, again very Pacquiao like. Never one to complain or question an official's decision, he can handle winning or losing equally well.

No question there have been other great pool players, but no one like Efren!

You hit the heart of the issue. Next time he's in LA I'm going to ask him to play more rotation ghost. It's just the best pool possible.

To the rest of you, who'd you ENJOY watching play the ghost?

Most of the champions believe that Buddy Hall was certainly one of the very best.....if not THE best 9 Ball player of all time. I've played many of the "all time greats" and several on any given day was the best.....Efren and Buddy had more of those days. ;)

so if your life depended on it, how would you rank Earl, Efren, and Buddy in 9 ball in a long set money match?

and btw, as amazing as efren is, personality and charisma...uhh...not his strong suits
