Derby City Advice Needed

I'm planning on going to Derby City next year; first time for me and a coupe friends. We're looking for some advice on the logistics of trip. Are there any good hotel options besides the Horseshoe? If not, do you have to drive to Louisville to find a decent restaurant? How about which days to go? Are some days "don't miss" and some "optional" or is it all good? While your're there, are you at the casino 24/7, or are there diversions close by. For us, it's going to be either a 12 hour drive or fly in. Any input there?
Any input is greatly appreciated.

A 12 hour drive is nothing. If you want to have no worries you can rent a car to drive and save the wear and tear on your own. I would stay at the host hotel. You are going with a few friends so don't be cheap, share expenses and make a real trip of it.

13 miles from casino is the next town , new albany indiana
many places there to stay
restraunts, bars, etc.

for a diversion, try the RUSTIC FROG ;)

We've always stayed at the host hotel and it's worth doing that the first time I think. It's cool to just walk down the hallway and be right in the middle of it. If you don't want to do that there are some nice enough hotels in New Albany.

I went a couple of years ago and stayed at the Hampton Inn 8 miles up the county road in New Albany. It is easy as hell to get back and forth to. The hotel was nice and cheaper than the casino, and included WiFi and a fairly decent "continental" breakfast. For options on food you will either need to go into New Albany or across the bridge to Louisville. There are some nice places in New Albany.

Then there is the Rustic Frog for a pit stop between the casino and New Albany, one of the nastiest strip clubs I've ever entered. It is not to be missed.

Just a heads up.. The casino is out in the middle of nowhere. They charge something like $10.00 a day for internet. Something like a 20-40 minute drive to get to a decent restaraunt outside of the casino.

It is still an enjoyable experience, but I enjoyed myself more when it was at the Executive West, and there were options outside of the hotel premises.

The casino knows they basically have you captive on premises if you are there for pool, and they straight up play that to the hilt.

I really really wish there were other options for Diamond to hold this event, but unfortunately, I guess there isn't at this time.

I have stayed at both motels in New Albany and at the Horseshoe the last 2 years. I get my room and meals competed (spelling). I would recommend staying at the casino hotel. It works well for me cause I like the pool, and my wife likes the casino.

yea man, just stay at the Casino there, it's more fun not having to commute. You know, you can always pack some easy to make grub in a cooler and eat in your hotel room. Hell for that matter bring a microwave and cook your own.

Thanks for the advice. How long should we stay there? Will we miss much if we don't get there until Monday or Tuesday? How about if we leave the last Saturday?

I agree 100% and I am glad you wrote this because I couldn't explain it any clearer.

I have stayed over in Clarksville Indiana more hotels lots of places to eat a little drive to horseshoe but not bad food is high at the casino pack some to eat also new Albany has two nice hotels cheaper than horseshoe around $90 to $100 a night

stay at the casino

If there is more than one in your group I would stay at the casino. the commuting expense saved will pay for the extra cost of the room. I went last year with my wife (who is a pool nut also) and we were going to stay in New Albany but checked into shuttle service to the casino (in case one of us wanted to stay and the other wanted to go take a nap or something) I think it was $15 or $20 one way! You could easily get interested in an action match and not want to leave, but your buddy is wasted and needs to be put to bed. If you want to watch the match and head to the hotel later, you gotta pay. Do that once or twice a day and you've covered the extra to stay at the horseshoe. And snacks in the room and travel into town for one meal a day is the way to cut costs. There is never a bad time to go, but later is probably better. Once nine ball starts that's when there is the most people there. Have a ball, and I hope to get there next year also. I was an idiot and didn't play, but I will next time I'm there.

If you can't stay for the entire nine days, I'd make sure not to miss the Bigfoot Ten Ball event. This past year, it took place during the first few days of the Derby City Classic and every match was on the stream table, but the timing of this event has varied over the years. I'm sure the announcement of when the Bigfoot will be played will come well in advance of the event.

Of course, if you're a 14.1 junkie, maybe you'd do better to come toward the back end of the Derby. Then, you'd see the one pocket final, the single elimination portion of the 14.1 event and the Derby City nine ball event.

stay at the casino.

The weather there at that time of year can be miserable. Ice storms froze everyone either in, or out a few yrs ago. Not worth the risk-trouble of staying elsewhere.

Paula Dean's Buffet is one of my fav's.....15-16 bucks for late afternoons, is right there.

if it's yáll's 1st time - do it right & stay @ host hotel. drive in, to save plane & have a car. bring a toaster oven/microwave & coffee maker. pack a BIG cooler & utilize the ice machine. bring your own liquor. plates, cups, forks.

there's a lot to be said, for being able to simply run upstairs to your room, and "eat/drink" - then come back down & continue.... plus, there's no risk of getting pulled/stranded driving 10mls back to your hotel.

all the action's going to be there.

__________

whenever you arrive will be fine-if you love pool, you will swoon and be in la-la land.
your friends may not understand the depth and breadth of what they are seeing.

If you're planning to compete, the earlier the better.
9Ball is the last event and starts during, then after, the 1Pocket on Wednesday.
Leave after the Sat. evening finals on Sunday.

Stay at the hotel.

Nonstop pool action and legends day and night.
There's a free business center, but the 10 a day wi-fi is fine for what it is.
Missing a moment there is a very sad thing indeed....
take it from a veteran ;)
