Alabama, there is a definite difference but I really can't explain what it is. After a while I will take it off and then I will be able to distinguish what the difference is but for now it will stay on, I don't want to jinx myself because I like the way I'm playing.

I play with a sixty inch cue. My balance point is 21" from the end of the butt, exactly the same place as most 58" cues with a 19" balance point, I just effectively added two more inches of wood to the back of my cue.

Seems to me like adding a joint sized extension at the joint would be more likely to move the balance point back than forwards or no change since most people will keep their bridge length the same on most shots and will grip where their fore arm is in the same position when they hit the cue ball. Two pins weigh more than one of course but you have also moved two inches of buttcap further behind your grip hand for most shots.

Anybody feel like measuring the balance point of your cue from the tip to the balance point with and without an extension? Doesn't really matter, just curious.

The two 4 inch plain maple are BalanceRite extensions. I sanded the logo off while spinning each one.
The fiddleback 4 inch with finish is a 3/8x11 four inch extension made by Bob Owen.

All of my cues are forward weighted and I really like the additional forward weight of the extensions.

Unfortunately no Buddy. It would be too difficult to match up eveyones butt joint diameter and shaft diameter for each individual production and custom.

Plus, if you have a custom, you may want to have matching woods, rings or at least a phenolic ring.

The good news is, something like this can be pretty much whipped up for you in a day.

Its not like the maker is cutting an entire butt and has to let the wood rest for a month or so.

Doing the finish would be the hardest part so obviously a tad longer than a day. Not much tho.

For about thirty bucks you can order a Balance-Rite brand from just about any of the big suppliers. It may not match your diameters perfectly, but it will be close enough for you to get a good feel for the kind of difference it will make.

I have a 3/8/ x10 Balance Rite that I've used on two different McDermott's and the fit is very close.

I have a uni-lock Balance Rite that matches the diameter of my Predator almost exactly.

They are only available in 4" sections that weigh about 2 oz.
 
Trouble finding them...

I keep googling pool cue inserts and only come up with a few like this one...

I just can't see how this will work. It looks so thin and I'm not sure what kind of hit I'll get out of just a metal piece. Anyway, when mine arrives, I should be able to figure out how this insert works. BTW, for any of you suckers paying $50, I'm only paying $1.55 for this one.:grin-square:

From how it sounds, I can go ahead and put my Balance Rite cue extension in F/S section.

Dabarbr has played at a world class level at one time and I take his opinions very seriously. These extensions move the balance point forward and extend the cue around 2". The question is: If you build a 60" cue with a thicker stainless steel joint (to add more weight up front) will you get the same effect? Or is it because its like getting a new cue and your have become more focused in executing your shots and therefore play better. Anybody have a 60" cue with a more forward balance to compare these extensions with?

Maybe with limited deflected shafts today you can play with a longer cue. 40 years ago you couldn't because of so much deflection and shaft flexing with longer cues back then.
 
It's gonna be interesting to see wich comercial cue manufacturer will first to offer 30" butt cues.
I'm thinking OB Cues, as they seem to have their finger on the pool world.

I also take Frank dabarbers words very seriously, but I was playing above my speed right out of the gate with it before I heard his comments about it :-). I haven't taken it off either. I don't even care what the reason is at this point, I just want to run 100 balls. It's working for Schmidt, Morris, Fach Garcia and Frank Dabarber. That's encouraging to me but like I said I didn't know that before I tried it. If people want to find a reason not to like it before for trying it because of some theory or another that's fine with me...If it's a gimmick, this is probably the very first gimmick I have ever fallen in love with:thumbup:

Mika Immomen has been using an insert that looks a lot like what you all have been describing. Up and coming Los Angeles cuemaker, Carlos Coll, made it for him.
 
i just got my balance rite yesterday. took a little work and some wax to get the joint to fit right, but it fits darn near perfectly on my Jacoby. it fits very snug, and the cue hits pretty close to the same as it did before feel wise. as for playing, i can definitely feel a little more of a forward balance point. it seems easier to move and control the cue ball too. played with it for about 45 minutes before league, and played two league matches (apa 9 ball)...won my first 46-16 and then lost my second to a 2 handicap player (but was only about 5 points from winning that one as well). all in all these don't take very long to adjust to, and it worked wonders. i had a few shots (even on a barbox) that it would have had to break out a bridge for without it, but since i had the extension i was able to shoot the shot normally, pocket the ball, and control the cueball much better. definitely worth the $30 i paid.

If you ask nicely, OB cues will make you a 30" butt.

Though it costs an extra $50, and there is a 3 month leadtime.

Check out 'Newsheriffintwn' - he posted a link above in this thread - Those are some very good looking extensions he makes.

Some people are in business to ship what they sell, but many small cue makers are not interested in doing any business outside of cash and carry to their local market ....

Especially for a low priced item like this.

That's not an extension and will not have the same properties. I think the advantage has a lot to do with having two pins instead of one.

A longer butt will only make your cue longer...Besides why should you have to ask any business 'nicely' to take your money?

A legitimate business will respond to YOU nicely and say thank you for your business.
