Pool Room Paint Color

Would love some input into what color you think I should paint the walls in my 'room' (read my garage).

Currently have drywall. I am going to tape, prime and paint it, but can't decide how to proceed.

I had thought of doing a very low (industrial style) berber carpeting up the chair rail height then paint the rest, but I have changed my plan and will just paint.

What say you?
 
Carpet on the walls. The Anti Gravity Dysons are pretty pricey.

When I was in High School, one of my friends moved to a bigger house. Well, the person who owned it before must have worked at a carpet store cause the walls on the basement stairwell plus the basement walls were nothing buy carpet. And Shag too.

White is too industrial and gets dirty quick.

Obviously Blue is my favorite color. These days, there are so many custom colors and tints it will drive you crazy trying to decide.

Myself, I would go with anything easy on the eyes and doesn't cause a glare. Earth Tones in Grey, what they call a Desert Green, Maybe even something a little darker in Green as in Forest Green. Keep in mind that the darker the color, the smaller the room will look and feel.

Even if your garage is bigger, with a table, seating etc, you might get a closed in claustrophobic feeling. I would want my cave, in this case to feel open.

If I were doing a Movie Room, I would want it to be on the darker side.

Visit Home depot and fill your pockets with Paint Swatches. Then hold them up to your dry wall with both the lights on and then with lights and your garage door open. Give you an idea on how the paint will look and change with different lighting.

LOL on the anti gravity vacuum. I played in a pool hall in Vegas, Mickey's Cues, that had the carpet on the walls. I liked it.

Thanks for the ideas on colors though. Just don't want to paint it and regret it. Interesting that the darker colors making the room feel smaller.
 
I am somewhat at the same place. Having my table (at my mother's house) moved to my place (basement) after I get the basement livable.

Anyway I think color choice(s) for your room greatly depends on the color of the table's cloth. I am going with "Wine" colored cloth and found this site to be helpful http://www.valsparpaint.com/en/explore-colors/painter/index.html
You can use one of their stock room photos and "paint" the walls the color of your choice. You can even upload a photo of your own and use the virtual painter with that. (I did not try that so I can't comment on how it works).

Once I chose my cloth color I went to wedding sites on the Net to get complimentary colors. You will find endless opinion and suggestions from women planning their weddings...and you know how important the "right colors" are for those special events.

I vote for a light yellow...seriously. And (from experience:angry:) Ill add: pick a shade, then go 2 shades lighter.

But probably the best course would to be find a comfy chair, a fast internet connection and something other than a phone to browse with...and check out the 'show us your home room' thread. Ton of different and awesome rooms there. From castle to dungeon, they are all there (are castle and dungeon actually opposites? Hmmm:confused:).

Hayden Fry, who has I believe a psych degree, did this in the Hawkeye opponent's locker room and it caused quite a stir in the 80's and then was copied by other teams.

That's the rumor here, anyway. Go Cyclones...oops.:eek:


To the OP: I did a textured wall and regret it as that paint has sand in it. The sand scratches any ball that hits the wall and the CB does that more than the others and that's bad, mm kay? Don't do it, mm kay?

All depends what look you are going for. I went with the "old school pool room" look and painted it a gold/yellow color (resembles my dad's old pool room). You can look in "show us your room" threads to see mine.

So, pick your theme first... what are you going to hand on the wall ? Try and pick a color that contrasts with the biggest pieces you will hand on the wall. Light blue stands out well with a wood pool table... I used light blue in my poker room....

Can you post a pic of the current space?

I suggest having a pro tape the drywall. That will make a lot of difference as far as the final appearance. Baseboard and other finish trim will make a big difference too.

For colors, the myriad of colors available at the store will confuse and blow you away - literally thousands of colors to choose from. When you narrow it down, you can pick a few and buy some samples (available at the paint store for a few bucks), paint some white posterboard, then tape it to the walls. This will give you an idea what the final will look like. I prefer neutrals for the walls myself, then use trim and décor to decorate with.

Since it is a garage and will be a bit more dusty than perhaps a basement location you might consider going with at least an eggshell or satin sheen. They will be easy on the eyes, but won't collect as much dust and be much easier to clean.

As for color, bring a swatch of your cloth color and carpet color to the paint store and find a lighter color that compliments both swatches.

This is good advice, but I'd up it to semi gloss. The issue with low sheen or flat paints happens when you attempt to clean them.. The action of the cleaning agent tends to remove some of the flatting agent in the dry paint film and leaves an area that is now shinier than the surrounding paint that has not been cleaned. Flatting agents are added to lower the gloss level of paints, if you look into a can of clear gloss lacquer for instance it is clear to the bottom. I f you look into a can of satin gloss lacquer you'll see the flatting agent at the bottom of the can which you have to stir completely to obtain the correct satin gloss level.

Go with darker colors such as grey's, tans and browns. You want the table to be the focal point and when you play with a nice light over the table the rest of the room will just fade to the background.

I once painted the ceiling in my pool room dark brown, it was white. It changed the whole look of the room. Customers loved it. For a small home room I would defiantly go darker.
 
If you go with a neutral color, you can change the mood of the room with hidden (indirect) lighting. Using different color led's pointed to make various effects can really make a pool room feel inviting. It gives a peaceful feeling. Blues and purples make it feel kind of like.....scuba diving on a coral reef.....peaceful and calming.
 
Funny this came cause I've deliberated over this a month or so back. I am painting my pool this weekend in anticipation of my table arriving in the next couple weeks.

I looked at Brown's and Grey's before settling on a dark grey for walls and ceilings. I think you'll really like the color.

positively agree, charcoal gray's, red's, blue's, the key word when color searching: "slate".
charcoal slate background colors for serious concentration at the table.
my brother painted his basement dark charcoal slate green, sear's best outdoor weather beater, satin finish.
it's amazing, the room disappears, it's like you and the table are in deep space.
