not that I wouldn't like to see you having the final word on this but here is where I'm stuck: :wink:
it would be nice to know at what level Danny usually plays in other recognized US tourneys where he is a known quantity.

Good morning colonial cousins..
I am an infrequent poster but have been on and off here a bit. Some know that I am based in England and am primarily an E8B player. I like watching AP on the interweb and also follow some of my former E8B buddies smashing you lot at your own game over there
A quick search through my posts will show all of this. A quick search will also show I have form as a TD, commentator, backer, governing body committee member, blah blah blah though retired from the game completely about 8 years ago and only came back in about 18 months ago.
I trust this will be sufficient for those who consider I have registered this username for the sole purpose of defending the player.
I saw Danny tonight at an E8B tournament in London, England - for the first time in about 8/9 years.
He told me about this event and he also told me about this thread.
I did have a load of posts I was going to reply to but I am not going to bother. I will make a few simple points.
In the 15 or so years I have known him, I have never ever heard of or experienced any kind of behaviour that is less than honourable on the part of Danny at any point. Ever.
Any tournament of mine he has played in I have never ever had a problem.
Danny did not hide his identity. Danny Gokhul is not a run of the mill name. It strikes me as easy to research.
Danny has never played professional E8B.
I know nothing of the TD for this tournament, except that he went on to win the tournament.
It is entirely possible to play up and down in ability/standard/speed. "If horses ran to form, we would all be millionaires".
The TD claims to have had 25 years of experience in pool but "appears" to have failed convincingly in his duty to "weed out" a distinctive looking little foreign looking chap with a London accent and a foreign name - which he gave honestly. Perhaps another 25 years of experience will give him the skill set he needs to get past this cunning disguise employed by the player.
My view is that the player felt he was wronged and had legitimate grounds for complaint. The tournament director thought he was being conned and felt he had legitimate grounds for complaint.
Both may have been right. Both may have been wrong.
It may be possible that neither the player nor the TD were dishonest.
I think some of the posts, coming from people that appear not to know either the player, the TD and were not even in the same state as the tournament let alone actually at the tournament are disgusting.
good accurate post, TD going on to win the tournament is whats bothering. knows has to play danny so then throws him out after day and half of play
Additionally, I heard a lot about Cleary and hos good work with TAR etc but pretty appalled by his total disregard for accurate information and posts during this thread. Most people just want to be informed on an issue that happened and as soon as more facts come out he only replies with pictures, videos and now he doesn't care. But he cared enough to bombard the thread.

It's no my tournament, I didn't run it.. and yes, I would have handled it in a different way but I don't think my solution would have pleased Danny much more. However, Scott is a friend and I will defend his character. I can promise you Scott was not scared to play him… That wasn't the reason or had anything to do with it.
Did the guy sneak in or just not realize he was too good? I don't know and I truly don't care. The guy walked away with his entry fee back which is more than almost everyone else who entered the tournament got. Just get over it...

I think maybe the reason this is still burning is because things that don't pass the smell test don't go away easily. This qualifies as such.
On one hand you have a guy wanting to enter a tournament for a chance to win $1,7000 (which to me is a big prize for first). After winning a few matches he gets asked to leave, and he is pissed. Maybe he thinks the guy running the tournament ( I don't think this qualifies as a TD, IMO) didn't want to play him because he wants first all to himself so there is foul play. Might as well throw the race card out there because in today's PC environment that makes everyone cringe. My opinion is this scenario is total BS.
On the other hand you have a guy that is way obviously too good for the local tournament entering in the tournament. (yes, he beat Klatt, and we all know what that means,, Klatt just beat Appleton for crying out loud). Maybe he did claim to be a BCA Master, whatever.. But at the end of the day, Mr. Danny knows how good he plays, and he knows he is way above the skill level of most in that tournament and in reality he wanted to take down $1,700. I don't blame him, but this still has life on AZ because some are defending his innocence in his just wanting to compete,, and that he let everyone know his true speed. Yeah, right. That happens all the time in pool halls. I'm sure he told folks there that he has taken out the best players in the game in tournaments (rolling my eyes).
It kinda pisses me off, because I like to enter those tournaments. I play at the mid D, low C level. I KNOW I am not going to win, but I do like the challenge. That is exactly the kind of tournament I should be entering. Now, I ask, how much weight can Danny give me to make it fun???? It isn't possible. He could kill me with the 4 out. Now, please don't mention (again) that Danny likes to challenge himself, which is why he entered this tournament. That is just totally wrong.
I think the point is there is a time when someone gets good enough that they should play in appropriate tournaments. I play in golf tournaments, and I feel confident that a low level PGA pro wouldn't try to snap off a local tournament claiming he just likes competetion.
I should not be entering the Steinway Classic, and this gentleman should not have entered that tournament.
Voice, please don't act as if you were neutral the whole time. You were not, you defended the guy and what he did. Yet, you have no reasoning as to why he entered. The only point you made was that he used his real name, but a fake name would be too risky. This way if his plan backfired, he could still play the oblivious card. Just that, it aint working. There isn't much reputation left to salvage. The guy didn't even have to scope out the room to know he was the best player there. All he had to see or hear was ABCD, and its stealing for him. You really think he didnt know that? If Hellen Keller ever played open speed, she would have known that too.

I'm sure it was a miscommunication. I'm sure Danny didn't realize his level was too good and "bca master" doesn't really mean anything. Means he's cashed in the Open and advanced which could be an A+ or a low level pro... But Scotty doesn't play BCA and doesn't know what that means. The two people who told Scott how he plays, saw him play 1 person and Danny lost. They assumed his speed and they were wrong.
But I'll bet my last penny that Scott didn't throw him out because he was scared and not because of Danny's race. Those two things are facts. Yes, Scott won the tournament, undefeated. If Scott had to play him, it wouldn't have been til the finals...

To be honest I have only read one inappropriate comment about Danny, and that was some low class comment about a taxi driver that clearly was meant to be cute, but wasn't. Other than that I have not read one derogatory comment about this man's reputation, so what are you referring to? I have only read that he is too good to play in this tournament, wish I had that problem.
It is pretty obvious to me why the community isn't upset about this,,, what is not obvious to me is why you think they should be.
You have ducked the question several times, but people seem to think you are Danny and trying to cause a bit of drama.

My highlighted text did not happen. I came back on Sunday morning (2nd day) and I was supposed to play him. I was informed that he was going to be kicked out when he arrived and I would get to advance. He was in no way going to be playing Scott as he was still on the winners side, not until at least the finals anyway.
Perhaps read my whole first post again.
I cannot give an informed view of the events of the day because I was not there. I can only give my view of the player, based on my personal experiences, which I did. Particularly following reading the first few pages of the thread.
Meeting Danny for the first time in 8 years or so for a catch up and me actually diving in to defend him are two completely different things. That's a bit like bumping in to an old college buddy 8 years on and agreeing to lend him a thousand bucks.
