Cost to recover table

I have a Gold Crown 3 , I was going to recover it myself and bought simonis 860 cloth.
The rails were fine when I bought it , almost newly recovered.
I have the bed set up and the slates are on it loose ,
I called the Billiards Plus place here in Columbus Ohio and asked how much to level the slates and put my cloth on the bed and put the rails back on . No new cloth on the rails.
$350.00 the guy said it would take an hour and a half.
Is there anybody in the Columbus Ohio area that can do it for a little more reasonable price? PM me please.
It has the ball return and a box on the end of the table to catch the balls also.
In case that makes a difference.
 
Simonis is hard to work with and I think a lot of mechanics up their price because of it. Having said that, I pay Glen Hancock (RealKingCobra) $500 to level and recover my table. However, he has got to be top 5 best table mechanics in the country.
 
I live in Wichita and had Jack Shurtz of Shurtz Custom Cues come and cover my table with 860 and he charged me "friend" price of $300.

I would say $350 is reasonable for a good mechanic. If it's a guy that works for your local store that sells tables, and bars and maybe even hot tubs, I'd ask for some samples of his work.

PLSRK22 is spot on with Glen, I've never had him work on any of my tables, but his reputation precedes him greatly. Never heard a bad word on his work from anyone on this forum in the 5 years I've been a member.

Sounds right but I question the time

If the slates are not right, I would say he is basically reassembling the table. At least that is what I would do in your situation. Let him take the slates off and start over. Check the frame, remount and level the slates, cover the table and hook up that pain-in-the-rear ball return.

That being said, it should take longer than an hour and a half to do it right.

You supplied the cloth and he didnt have to do the rails and he charged 300 ? or some different combo?

I bought the cloth off of him for $350 if memory serves....it was almost the same amount that I could find it online. He did the rails and had his wife Eva with him. The particle board underneath the slate was in kind of rough shape and fixed that all up. Not sure what he would have charged someone else. I'd spent a bunch of money with him and Bob Owen prior to having him do the work.
 
whatever you do - don't skimp on this part and do your research on who is doing to recover
 
Thanks for the answers so far , i always thought the rails were the tough part and since I wasn't having them done it would be about half the price .
I still don't understand 350 for an hour and a half of work .
Guess I'm stuck in the 70s.
 
$350 for just the labor is too much. I paid $570 for a good mechanic for a table setup of a taken apart table. Cloth including the rails (Simonis 760), put table together and level and to shim the pockets on a 8' table. Maybe he quoted you a price with the cloth purchase.

I thought he hadn't understood when he gave me the price , so I asked , "even if I am supplying the cloth" and he said "yes".
I can see 570.00 easily for all the work you had done.
 
I question the quality for 1.5 hours work. Having your table set up right it critical. A bad job is a waste. A so so job is a waste. I would be inclined to say you expect it ti play to your critical satisfaction and what will it cost? Do not settle.
 
what do you think a reasonabl price is, book collector?

That is where I was going with it: you don't want a half decent job, just to save $100. Home tables are recovered so rarely, it be hooves one to get it done correctly.

Are you saying setting up the slate and covering should take more than 90 minutes?

Even if it's double that, the 350 he was quoted it over $100 an hour.

Is that the going rate for a table mechanic?

I had a full table setup from a crate for $570 including cloth and shimming the pockets, going by that 350 for just the labor on the slates is about double what it should be.

PM or call Josh Eberts, he goes by Club Billiards on here or something similar. 937-609-2049 Is the number I have for him. He's out of Dayton, see what his price is when he's coming thru town to another job. Does good work....

A brunswick gold crown is a different animal than any home table...commercial grade table labor is more cost all day long.

None of us know exactly what will be involved with the room, and leveling. No one knows what the mechanic may run into. I have had great mechanics and I have had bad ones. If the table is not perfect, whatever you pay is a waste.

I think you have to look at the job, not the hourly rate. Some loser can struggle for many hours and the table plays like crap. The same table may play lights out and be set up quick by a real pro. To reduce a good table man to an hourly rate is to undervalue the job.
 
My brother paid 200 for a "supposedly" table mechanic to install previously purchased 860 on his 7 foot. We would have been better off doing it ourselves. Waste of time and money. The bed is ok but the rails suck! Didnt use the right featherstrips. Cloth pulling out. Never again with that douchebag. Never undervalue a good table mechanic!
