Mark Wilson: Genius Or Nincompoop?

Is that even how to spell it, n-i-n-c-o-m-p-o-o-p?

So the team has been chosen and it leaves me feeling confused and bewildered.

The selection of John Schmidt was based on what?

It could not have been based on his rotation play this year - or last. Was it that he is a 2006 US Open winner - a wiley veteran that our team needs? Or could it be that he's so much fun to be around, that his quick wit and intelligence has earned him a spot on the team? A mascot?

What about earning your way on to Team USA by performance?

What kind of message does this send to future candidates who bust their asses, play extremely well all year, have perfect attitudes, then get passed over in favor of someone who has not shown up at any rotation event of note displaying anything that remotely resembled success.

Can John polish up his rotation game in time for Mosconi Cup play? I suppose it's possible and, to be honest, I really hope that he does.

*BUT*

Why on earth was Jeremy Sossei kicked to the curb with the kind of year he is having? His rotation game is already gleaming. And he's a perfect gentleman.

For a captain who claims to be building a bright future for US pool, I fear that the exclusion of someone like Jeremy from the squad sends a really lousy message.

If you keep your nose clean, work your behind off, get consistently great results all year, you can be passed over in favor of someone who has had no appreciable success in 9b in a very long time.

Mark Wilson may turn out to be a genius but at this particular moment, I'm leaning the other direction.

John, I hope you will surprise us all.

and I will always say:

Go USA.

best,

Brian,

You are setting up a false choice. Mark Wilson, is not, and does not have to be either a genius or nincompoop. He is a well intentioned person trying his best to put together a team that is competitive and does not embarrass his country...like the last team did.

This is Mark's first time doing this. Maybe he'll make a mistake or two and maybe he'll make a good decision or two. Neither scenario means he has to be a nincompoop or a genius. Moreover, the process always gave this kind of discretion to Mark, and I am not totally sure on this, but I don't think he made any promises that the process was going to be totally transparent either...only that his first priority was to have a team that represented the country with a high degree of character.

In any event, like you, regardless of who is on the team, whether or not they have titles, or whatever, I do not want to see people from my country acting like the team did last year. It was embarrassing.

Don't worry, I just checked and the country isn't watching and doesn't care, due to a vast assemblage of factors ranging from folks in authority (Mark and many others) to international bodies (praise be to the IOC for the beneficence they have shown us) to the players themselves (Challenge of Champions 1991).

In all seriousness, it astounds me how frequently billiards pops its head up in popular culture, and yet that the American people should be so thoroughly uninterested in it at the professional level. Must've been something we said. :sorry:

thanks, Dave, for sharing your take on things.

John Schmidt is by his own admission one of the country's best sandwich makers. So if anybody gets hungry he can make lunch.

Can't wait til this years Mosconi and MW take their place in pools fossil record. Unreal what happens in this game.

Actually it is mostly what hasn't been said.

Well the good news is John won't have to do much to surpass anything MD has in the MC ,, not that it's saying much

Dechaine flat out robs anybody on Mosconi team but SVB. John is a nice guy and has been a top player but that was years ago and even in 2006 he wasn't strong enough to be on the team.

You are like my kid sister. Always hanging around with your finger in your nose talking nonsense. You got some kind of man crush? Bug off freak.

That's a good point, there's more misinformation in the "pool world"

That's a good point, there's more misinformation in the "pool world" than any living human could sort through. Is this from lack of regulation? We noticed the lack of having responsible authority in pool has led to more gimmicks than you could shake a {jump} stick at. LoL

The best thing that could happen is for the game to return to it's original rules.....at least it would be interesting to watch, I can't see how anyone can sit through an entire match when all the players are doing is running out (usually easy shots), playing safe, or kicking.

There's much more to the game than repeating these three things over and over and over and over. It's like watching a football game and the defense isn't allowed to touch the quarterback.....and using the "magic rack" is like playing "T BALL" for pro players.

From another thread where you spewed the same non-sense

I imagine anyone that watched the Hall/Boyes match on Friday or Shane/Dennis match on Saturday would disagree that one foul doesn't provide great entertainment. Well for the pool lovers at least. It'll take more than a change of rules to get the non-pool lovers involved.

By the way, how's that reality show coming along?

To add, the MC (also a one foul event) draws a pretty good amount of viewers, both live and through TV/streaming. You've got connections in the biz, CJ. Why don't you reach out to Barry Hearn and Matchroom, and tell them they need to start playing push out rules at the MC? Oh that's right, because you'd get laughed out of the room without a thought.

Hey now, that's the same spot you offered me. Pretty sure I play like wayyyyyyyyy better than ol' one stroke.

You should give him at least the 6 out with breaks and ball in hand.

No doubt another strong APA 4 who likes to bark a lot but never leaves the porch to run with the big dogs.

I hear his girlfriend gave him his screen name:wink:. He's also known widely as one and done.
