Mosconi Cup Unpicked Players Bail Out

To answer this question. The trip would be "charity" and knowing one of the guys well. I can tell you he ain't no charity case!

The job titles they created to mask the charity is laughable! Splitting the money 8 ways when only 5 earn it, is again charity!

These guys are too proud for charity!!! Just my two cents.

Given that you don't know these guys or the situation, don't you think coming on here publicly trashing them for a personal decision you don't like is "wrong" and you owe them an apology. IMO

Sorry Kid I know him too ,, we all have let pride stand in the way of good decisions , and he's doing just that ,, a personal friend of his I know said he was all about ready to quit the game as he did before when he thought he would go back to school another bad decision he made ,, he's a nice guy we have seen him grow up over the yrs i don't think he realizes the opportunity this is I hope comes to his senses

Typical AZB behavior: Criticize people you don't know, for decisions they've made THAT YOU KNOW NOTHING ABOUT! :shakehead::confused:

That could be true but if they agreed to it they should stand by it , a man is only as good as his word

I strongly disagree. This is a consolation prize of a free trip.

The event is supposed to be "merit" based. No one has defined how the decision was "merit" based. Oscar indicated they "never" battled one another privately to decide who goes and that disappointed him greatly! I always thought some round robin format or something!

Anyway, declining is not the kiss of death. He may walk away from pool and never look back. So, no harm. Even if stays involved, upsetting Mark Wilson is not grounds for exclusion and matchroom may go in another direction at any point in time.

Mark lobbied for this inclusion not matchroom. Mark made major mistakes all along the way. IMO

I hope these guys do well. I still can hardly believe that last year's team did so poorly with all that talent. I think a team of Shane, Dechaine, Deuel, Morris, and Earl would do more damage than the current group going over- but then again I thought last year's team had a real chance a winning. What do I know?

Then we can assume that you'll tell all the details of what decisions were made, by whom and why.

We'd appreciate your firsthand knowledge of the situation.

I'm just going on the info posted , if they didn't say they would go then it's a mute point . If they did than they should follow up on thier word

The losing team gets 20k correct? And the three not picked get 10% of that which is $2000x3= $6000 So the remaining 5 players plus at LEAST Mark Wilson as non playing coach have to split the remaining $12,000...That doesn't add up to me either...I didn't like that they were going to do that from the very beginning.

12 plus 6 is 18

The winning team gets $20k per player and the coach also.

The losing team gets $10k per player and the coach.

hate to be the grammar nazi but....

at least you used the correct their...

It's a moot point, a mute point would never be made...a moot point is a pointless point that is made.

Then they should follow up on their word. Than is a comparison...

Ok done with the grammar nazi'in (yes I know nazi'in isn't a word)

IF:

You were in contention,

Agree to attend if not selected,

And then backed out...

You have just cut your own throat as far as future team consideration.

Going gives you a chance to witness a unique competitive situation and a chance to support the team, even if it's just racking and getting coffee.

Don't go and you've blown it on many levels.

I do not think the money to be paid tot he players and their expenses was coming out of the other players funds so that is wrong. Mark raised separate funds so the team could travel together and work together to get the best result possible. No way do I believe this was a money thing and I do not want charity. No it was if I am not on the A team then I will not participate.

Say what you want about the title of breaking coach, safety coach, make fun of it but I am believe it would of had value. Matchroom was very positive on the inclusion of the non players and thought it would have been a good thing for both teams in the future. Also they might not of sparred and played for the spots but there was ongoing multiple types skills testing and analysis and some players worked and improved these areas that Mark was evaluating or whatever.

Some of you forget these players all said they would go whether they were picked to play or be in the assistant role. So these 3 were not picked it, was going happen to 3 of them no matter the merit or reasoning. Why not do what they said they would go and support the players. Be positive, do whatever to get the best result. That would of been 3 more sets of eyes, 3 brains and 3 hearts all going in the same direction. That will be a tough place to play the room will be loud and boisterous and anything that can be done to build up our team would have been a good thing. Home team advantage will be very strong in this venue for Europe.

Also, I call BS on the money/charity thing, Mark raised the money to support these players in this now unfulfilled role, money for their not insignificant expenses and funding to compensate them win or lose. Hotel rooms over there are like $400/night airfaire etc. This was not going to be a charity case thing in any way. Myself. I do not expect these 3 to make as much $$$ that week as they walked away from and they will not be live on TV to a huge European and Asian audience plus the streaming North American viewers. Getting more name recognition for our players. It would have been very positive for our team and our sport and also for Matchroom.

So I am appalled at people putting their ego's ahead of the team, which this year they were actually supposed to be part of a team with an actual coach. They were doing the right things getting together doing the team building seal training, charity work etc. The sort of things that will create alot of capitol in taking pool in a positive direction as opposed to the "what is in it for me" attiude we have had in the sport in the past. Putting in work for the long term. Would it have been hard to rack for the "players" and give breaking advice for a few hours per day for a week. Set up drills, be positive, perhaps play practice sets but put out some positive energy and work to make the event a success. To have to sit in the corner and cheer for the team. Have a couple of weeks together in Illinois and then England as a team and not get to be a "player". Sure it would not be the easiest but perhaps they could have done that, taken one for the team and used that to focus themselves for the next year. Used that to strengthen their own resolve and stayed true to what they committed to initially, stick with team through the Mosconi cup whether they were a player or in a support role. I am sure they would have shown more character and created more long term capitol with Matchroom than they did with this I am not a player so I am going home.

In closing unpicked players I wish you all the best the next couple of weeks, I hope you prove me wrong and actually comeout ahead somehow/somewhere of what you would have earned fulfilling your obligation to the team and to the endeavor. The team would have been more with you there and I think you all know that in your hearts.

Good luck US Mosconi Cup, lets show the world why you were the players picked. USA USA USA

I know the reasoning behind one of the players who decided not to go and I won't share the reasoning because it's not my place, but the reasoning is sound and I respect him for the decision.

They all talked the teamwork shit until they didn't get picked. Not all players on teams in most sports get to play...that is what a team is. The US players still don't get it. Best of luck to the five that are playing. For the three that opted out...grow a pair!

Wedge

I find this totally disturbing that the three non-picks suddenly have reneged.
Mr. Wilson's energy, time, knowledge, inspiration, and no doubt, expenses
were expected to be reciprocated by the non-picks to SUPPORT the team.

These three were given roles, albeit as non-players, to contribute their knowledge,
perspectives, and spirit. Heaven forbid they had to do some actual WORK for money.

If TRUE, I have lost some respect for these three players.

The rest of us do not know the reasoning and it is difficult to accept, on blind faith, a player backing out of a commitment.

In my book it'd have to be a pretty good reason.

The 8 were asked BEFORE anyone was cut. Of course they all said they would go. All 8 thought they would make the team. Three didn't and feel different now about going. They spent 8 months of thier life having a 10k-20k carrot dangled in front of them. They were cut...they just want to end it. At least that's how I would feel about it. Johnnyt
