I was flipping through Netflix last night and saw that they are streaming The Hustler. I haven't seen it available before so thought I'd pass along the info.

I watched it the other night with my son. He is 9 and watched the whole thing with me. Pretty cool.

Country

Hi, do Netflix have different movies etc from country to country.
Can't find in Sweden😨.
Do anyone have any ideas where to find it.

Would love to see it😊.

I wouldn't be surprised if they did. You should just be able to search for "The Hustler" and it would show up if it's available.

I found it on Roku under "critically acclaimed dramas", I think.

Thx, I guess it has to be somewhere, dont mind paying. Havent really put My mind to It to learn about downloading, torrents etc-guess it's about time though, got myself a new IPad for christmas present- works great so far😄.

Just need to figure out a way for it so the spellcheck is either gone or for both Swedish and English. Quite fun to see all the different words it choses, but it takes forever to correct everything😅.

I remember watching it on Netflix about a year ago. I don't remember if I paid for it or not.

IMHO the movie is more about alcoholism than pool. But since it revived pool for a while, that's a good thing.

It's on my list of All Time Great Movies. I believe it was Paul Newman's first leading role and he won an Oscar for it.

He was nominated for an Oscar but didn't win. He won an Oscar for TCOM.

Not his first lead. He had leads in hits like Somebody up there likes me, Cat on hot tin roof. And no he did not win Oscar for few decades despite being nominated countless times

He was nominated for an Oscar but didn't win. He won an Oscar for TCOM.

Newman together with Pacino were like the Jimmy White of snooker or Ivan Lendl of tennis - Newman and Pacino were nominated countless times but did not win until late in their career.
Newman famously was favorite to win for The Verdict in early 80s but lost to an unknown Ben Kingsley in Gandhi

Bob...Newman had leading roles in several movies in the late 50's, including The Long Hot Summer, The Left Handed Gun, and Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, before The Hustler. He won the Oscar for Color of Money in 1986, not The Hustler. The Hustler would have won best picture if it hadn't have been for West Side Story. :D

Edit: I guess I should read the whole thread first, before posting! LOL

Not

No it was not until The Color Of Money that Newman won an Oscar.

The Hustler was nominated for nine Oscars and two. That year's entries included westside story, breakfast at Tiffany's, and Guns of Navarone. Tough field like when Earl has to play Daz, Mika, and Johnny.

I recently re-watched The Hustler, and I have to say..... Meh.

In my opinion:
The romance is slow and depressing.
The psychobabble is preachy.
The pool bits are fun, and the pool room atmosphere is palpable, but the "amazing shots" are engineered and unimpressive.
The ending is nonsense. Why does Eddie owe Burt any of his winnings for a game Burt did not stake? If Burt really thought he was owed money, why did he let Eddie go?

It remains one of the "best pool movies of all time"... Because, frankly, there are so few pool movies.

Just my two cents. If you disagree, fine.

Because Burt exploits people and pays goons to help him; even Fats kowtows to Burt. Eddie got under Burt's thumb with the trip to play Findlay, and once you're there you will stay there until he doesn't need you anymore. Even though Eddie played Fats with his own money, from Burt's point-of-view he is still owed money. Eddie does a similar thing in TCOM; when Vince went to the poolroom on his own and made $150, Eddie still demanded his share.

Burt let him go without paying but took pool away from Eddie as a "punishment" of sorts. Pool defines who Eddie Felson is. "It was never about the money." It was about beating the best (Fats) to become the best. Without pool, who is Eddie Felson? No one.

I think the version on Netflix is a pan and scan version, but not 100% sure. If you buy the Dvd it's super wide aspect ratio. Wider than the current 16:9 common today.

You make some interesting points. Thanks.
