2015 World Chinese 8 Ball Masters field looks amazing

field included Stephen Hendry

Stephen frickin Hendry!!!!

I know he's dabbled in this game but this is like 50k for first so expect him to come and play against a field full of world champions

Hendry is hugely mediocre at C8B, although how much time he devotes to it is questionable.

I love C8B. Quite why the pool world hasn't got behind it is anyone's guess. America doesn't care because SVB can't play it.

Shane got 9th last year...

SVB can't play it? You call getting 9th not being able to play it lol...oh you mean he doesn't dominate it like he does everything else...

Here's my guess: to expensive to convert a pool table to snooker style pockets, for little gain in the long run.

Earl Strickland is playing - now that should be interesting,

Earl Strickland is playing? That should be interesting, Earl is definitely the best 8 Ball player in the USA, glad they invited him.

Any player used to playing UK 8 ball and being among the very best at it at that has a head start in this field. That's why I can't imagine Gareth not making it to the final and not winning it. Snooker players also have a slight advantage due to the cut of the pockets and how tight they are. That being said, I don't rate Hendry at all in this game. Then there are pool players from the US. They are at a disadvantage in so many ways. The USA is so shut off from outside pocket billiard games like UK and Chinese pool and even snooker tables ate hard to come by over there. The C8B tables are so different to pool tables so I think the US pool players will struggle massively.

Gareth is the best 8 ball player in the group and probably has the best fundamentals to hold up under pressure. Honestly can't see him losing.

I have no idea what the audience is like there. Could be the place to let Earl focus and play his best game, I don't know.

Anyone from here playing there will be at a huge disadvantage if they don't spend some time adjusting to the rounded pocket corners, hopefully Earl can at least get some time in on a snooker table. Those look to be pretty large tables so a nine or ten foot snooker table should be pretty compatible. He will have to study the rules too, even after watching a video explaining them the explanation needed some explaining to me!

A lot of ifs including travel and such but Earl could place well. A 24 person event and even the movement through the sections of the event aren't real clear but Earl certainly has the skills to do well given even a little time to adapt.

Earl believes he is still the best in the world on a tight ten footer. This event could give credence to that belief or cast it in grave doubt if he does really well or really poorly. Would be a surprise if he won it but it isn't impossible.

I wouldn't be surprised if Hendry gets an apperance fee for all these Chinese events as it doesnt seem as if heart is in em

still, love to see him

From Gareth Potts' website after he won this event last year: "Joy [Joy Billiards, with whom Gareth is under contract] have certainly got plans to take Chinese 8-Ball worldwide, and there’s no reason why it can’t be as popular as it is in China. For one, it’s got the best set of rules in any pool game by a long way. Joy will spend the next few months looking at how to go forward with this, and they hope to bring the first tournament to Europe in the near future."

Pidge -- Do you know whether (and, if so, how) the rules differ from WPA 8-Ball rules? Did they do away with having to explicitly call the 8-ball even if the shot is obvious -- the rule that cost Darren Appleton 2 years ago? Has Joy done anything yet to take the game outside of China?

Barton is the expert in chinese 8 ball rules, apparently.

Seriously, they look like what i understand to be standard 8 ball rules, but I'm no expert in those by any means.

Players have to nominate the 8 ball pocket but they are hardly anal about it and i doubt the refs will challenge a player that forgets. I find it insulting pro players have to nominate a pocket, so god knows what they feel about it.

One of the places in my area got a Chinese table imported so that the local pros can practice on it. I gave it a shot and it was pretty much like playing snooker with big balls. Shots down the rail are too low percentage, so you need to play breakouts on balls that are on the the rail. Tough, tough game.

Naoyuki Ooi came by to practice up for the tourney and he struggled as well, but after 30 min or so he was firing them in but running out was still a struggle. Until they start playin on these tables exclusively, I don't think any 9-ball pros will be able to do much damage against Gaz and some of those monster Chinese players, the game is just too different.

I have absolutely no idea on the rules used. I've watched it maybe a handful of times.

My snooker hall has a 9ft Chinese table to accommodate for the Chinese players that frequent the club. I've played on it a bit, and the Chinese are more than happy to play cheap sets on it against anyone. Sadly they are awful at the game and all the good UK 8 Ball and snooker players at the club make a killing off them. The rules I've played against the Chinese lads have been WPA 8 Ball Rules. We've never had to call a pocket though.

there are a few more rules

I got a little confused trying to listen to a youtube video but there seems to be a pretty comprehensive set of "no-luck" rules. I assume if you call them you can play safe but accidental safeties aren't allowed, I presume two way shots are also gone.

This video is in some furrin language but most can probably pick out a word or two here and there. I can't tell what is just a loss of turn foul or the shot gets handed back to you and what is loss of frame. Frame I think is a funny way to spell and pronounce "game".
