I'm back..and I'm pissed !

hanks, Flash, we need that type input on this site

You've seen me write it before.
I watched Danny Jones when he was first starting out and he never dogged it.
Wimpy gave him the 8, in the old time push out 9ball right there at Big Town Billiards here in Atlanta. Wimpy won, but he sure had a tiger by the tail with Danny.
I always said Danny Jones was my favorite player and he didn't mind giving some of us younger guys tips.
The main one I remember was........."Use an open bridge on all shots except when you have to draw the cueball, or power hit a ball frozen to the rail...Then switch to the closed bridge..."

That's what Danny told me about the bridge and I've discussed it with several champion players. Allison Fisher and I talked about it the last time we were together at the WPBA US OPEN. Danny Jones was such a great example, from the way he dressed, conducted himself and unselfishly helped players striving to improve.

Thanks, Flash, we need that type input on this site, we're all tired of the needless bickering, after all we are on the same side. Passing down useful information is healthy and it creates a positive synergy - the Game needs this to evolve to the next level.

Aloha

Let what go Lou? Feel free to post what you want about Freddy, That's what a discussion board is for. But please don't tell me how or what to post. 'Won't be pretty'...really, get over yourself.

Using Freddy to beat down SJD.

The fact is not everyone was so enamored with Freddy. When all that starts coming out it won't be pretty. So do what you will. I'm not telling you what to do I'm making a suggestion.

C'mon Lou. There are NOT many in the pool world who did not like Fred. I saw it first hand. Heck, the pros, the shortstops and the suckers as well. If it was true, why would it not have come out a long time ago ??

Heck, he helped every down and out pool player he could. If you were sick and dying, you had a place to stay in his home. He helped and cared for many "old" pool players, especially Bugs Rucker.

Fred is what I would call all bark and no bite. He was a great writer and story teller, and he had played pool in just about every corner of the country. He had a genius level IQ, and thus was the problem. I don't believe he thought he was smarter than everyone, but more he wondered what was wrong with other folks ;)

Was he wrong sometimes, sure, we all are. Would he admit it, not so much, ya know, just like the rest of us ;)

In 40 years knowing him (since I was 12), Fred and my old man were partners in a couple of pool rooms in Chicago. Pool players flocked to him, they wanted to be around him. He was what someone once told me was the "cool kid" in the pool rooms. Back in the day he was the only white guy that could walk into any black pool room on the south side, and NOT get hassled but also could walk out the front door with the cheese.

And just like in life, there are always gonna be some that don't like the "cool kid"... and that's ok, he's pissed me off a few times as well, but he'd be the first person to give me his shirt off his back, literally.

Many times I'd run into him at DCC or at Red Shoes, or I'd stop over after a White Sox game over the last 10 years, and he would load me up with t-shirts, DVD's, whatever he had, he wanted to give me. I felt bad, so I tried to pay him, but he would have none of that.....He was a guy with a huge heart but would argue with you he didn't... cause he was no "softy" ;)

Heck, he was the guy who traded me for my crappy pool cue for his new Burton Spain when I was 15. I didn't know who Spain was at the time, so it was not until decades later that I realized he was taking care of me.

So, Lou, I'm not all that sure you knew Freddy well, and thus you really don't have much information to form an opinion about him, or to say many others have the same opinion as you. He was a legend in Chicago, and he brought a little piece of him to the rest of the country in his DVD's and books.

RIP Freddy :grin-angelic:

RJ, punter was using Freddy to beat down SJD. I was pointing out that that was not wise for obvious reasons.

On the broader issue, St. Louis is not so far from Chicago and I have spent plenty of time at Chris's and Red Shoes, know guys in your neck of the woods, and so I've heard both sides. I have watched Freddy play for many years, spoken to him in person and on the phone, and spent a couple of hours with him one-on-one at his house. I knew him well enough to form an opinion beyond that of those that just knew him from his DVDs or the forums.

If someone wants to sing the praises of a favorite player, I don't believe anyone has a problem with that. (Look at CJ. He doesn't even need someone else to it for him :-) But tearing down one guy at the expense of another like punter was doing is likely to cause problems. Lots of guys like SJD, just like lots of guys liked Freddy.

Good on you ChicagoRJ!

Thanks for writing about your long-long, personal experience I and actually knowing Freddy Bentivegna.

It's sad when jealous people threaten to throw dirt on those whom they know so little about.

Some 'Players', and I use the word loosely in life are so devoted to the cue games that they want to leave a legacy behind of their life's work for all to benefit from their personal and informative interaction with fellow cueist throughout their lives. This is what Freddy has done for us all!

Another has comics and cartoons that portray their endeavors and persona in the pool world! Even though they're far from being a, 'Super Hero!'

It's EXTEREMELY deserving that the 2015 One Pocket org HOF dinner at DCC honors such legacies as Freddy 'The Beard" and Grady 'The Professor' which have both left us all way too soon.

Nice stories. Don't worry about Lou and his lies. Freddy went out of his way to let Lou know what he thought of him and his lies and it was not pretty. Even SJD got very, very offended by Lou and his ugly comments and sided with Freddie.

You must spread around.....so no green..
Great job and insightful! Thanks

FINAL Thoughts !!!

I wish I had enough pull with the mod's, to get this thread locked down !..It has been a very senseless thread, with way too many disparaging remarks, and bitter, hateful exchanges from both camps. (some by myself). I do feel that ONB was the catalyst, and I place the blame squarely on him for the direction it took !

This will be my final post in this thread, and I would like to share with you guy's, a PM I sent to one of my supporter's. I will not identify him, but I do hope he will save it, if only to verify its existence !

Here it is, in its entirety;.....

Mr. XXXX, Thank you for putting your 2 cents in for me, as you have done more than once in the past !..I am about ready to give up on this whole damn forum mess..It has gotten way out of hand, and I don't really need it.

Let me share something with you, (and only YOU please) just for grins !..I had just finished my post to Mike H, where I had prostituted myself, and truthfully sworn I had never had any contact, or knowledge of ONB, or who he was !..I had just finished reading the post where he (ONB) had been banned, when the phone rang ! (my phone # is readily available on 1P.org, and has been for years)

It was ONB, (at least he claimed to be) and try as hard as I could, he would not identify himself to me !..He was halfway apologetic, for creating the problems he did for me, and I let him know, in no uncertain terms, that I did not appreciate it one bit, especially the posts where he began signing off as me !..Apparently, he fooled some of the 'dimmer bulbs' on here, into thinking that he was really ME !...I don't really care who he is, I am just VERY glad he is gone.

His overboard pro SJD stance, was very embarrassing to me, and I have no idea what his motive was, other than feeling I was being ganged up on !..As you know, I am no 'shrinking violet', and I will speak for myself...However, I am on a very short leash, and apparently he thought he was helping me out !

Thank's again, for the very kind words, and all the best,

Dick

Do not bother responding to this post, as I promise you, I will NOT take "take the bait" and become involved again..SJD

I'll take a veiled pot shot at people and then say I'm not going to respond. I swear you and Lou are two birds of a feather always instigating shit.

I hope you know it makes you look pretty pathetic.
