The last thread I can find about the best break cue is from back in 2010 and I wanted to get some updated opinions since there have been several new break cues that have come out. I am in the market for a break cue and am looking to stay around 500 or less which puts me in the market for nearly all production breakers and a fair amount of customs as well. So... lets hear it. Whats the best break cue in your opinion and why? Feel free to include more than "because it breaks like a monster" lol. Feel free to be as descriptive as possible with your choice and why. Btw, Ive always just used a simple poison vx 2.9 jump/break cue.

im open to hear all opinions on what you think the best break cue is but for me ive never liked irish linen. I prefer some grip and even like wrapless but not irish linen. However, feel free to include any cue in your opinion, even if it is irish linen. Finally, try to narrow it down to one choice if possible. Your top 5 doesnt help unless you are being pretty descriptive on your likes and dislikes of them. Unless you choose your favorite production and your favorite custom. Thats different. Thanks alot for chiming in!

I've got a J&J i got on sale for around 60bux. It looks like a Gilbert and works great. Hate the phenolic so i'll change it and have 75bux in it. JMO, but spending big bux on a b/j is crazy.

I did exactly the same thing, also took the weight bolt out. Had a $300 B/J, sold it, liked the J&J better.

I have had a ton of J/b cues, Omen, Lomax, Gilbert, TNT,and a few others I don't remember. I owned several of each cue above to find that one cue that works best for me.

Today, I use a Mezz PB2 break cue and have tried a Samsara J/B cue. I also recently sold a Pechauer break cue that was fantastic.

I concluded that the break cues out performed the j/b cues for breaking. At least that is what I found to be true for me. I pocketed more balls on average with the break cue than with a J/B cue. Breaks were from the same spot on the same table, using a magic rack.

I would rate the other j/b as follows:
Samsara
Omen
Gilbert
Lomax
TNT

The Lomax is a great J/B but I did not care for the phenolic tip and had cue balls flying from the table.

The Pechauer, for 275, is an awesome breaking cue for the money. I may buy another one some day.

Ive heard some amazing things about the forward weighted pechauer break cue. I was going to ask about that because that was one of the ones I was considering buying because ive heard so much good about them. Now, are we talking about the butterfly version or the newer version they released more recently? Is there a difference bets them anyway? I actually have two pechauer playing cues and love them.

Pechauer eliminated the butterfly break cue do to cost, no other reason. Break cue is the same now, just no butterfly available.

The Ob rift is a great break cue .

I've tried a LOT of them from very expensive to reasonable, from production models to customs but the one that stood head and shoulders above the rest is a Gulyassy Anvil. They aren't made anymore so you'd have to find one used. It's a beast.

The best break cue is your own roll straight break cue. No matter expensive branded breaker or cheap 50bucks stick, if you are good player you will break with similar result with any break cue.

I have not tried all the break cues out there, but I do have tried the most popular production break cues and a few different custom break cues.
No break cue I have tried comes close to Mezz Power Break with the Deep Impact Pro H or R shaft in combination with a Taom tip.
Not the cheapest break cue on the market, but you get what you pay for.

All I will say is if you find a break cue that works well for you, stick with it. I have been guilty of jumping from cue to cue over the past several years.

Currently using the Mobley M-22 with a Taom tip. I get power and control, and I can jump well.

I have tried Samsara, Lomax, Predator, Mezz (3 models), The Mobley Grampa's Mule, two X-Breakers and several others.

Here is where things get tricky, I really liked my mate's Mezz Dual force, so I got myself one, and it felt nothing like my mates. I had a BK3, hated it, my friend got one, and his breaks really nicely. So for me, with production break cues, it is luck of the draw if you get a good one, or a dog.

I will not be swapping from the Mobley, that's for sure!!

I've owned a lot of break cues and quite a few jump/breaks over the years, and have tried just about everyone, except the new Mezz.

IMO, if you want a dedicated breaker go with Lomax..... but be prepared for sticker-shock.(there's a reason you don't see these for sale often)

If you want a jump/break go with the Samsara or Gilbert.
Martin at Superior Cue(jazznpool) has a few Samsara's, and can give you a decent deal.

If you want to go on the cheap, get a J&J...... change out the tip to a Samsara, and your good to go.

Another option for a dedicated breaker is Alex Brick, and Ben Green. Both make one hell of a break stick, without breaking your bank....;)

Good Luck.

thanks for the responses thus far. I bought the poison vx 2.9 jump/break and put a samsara on it and it has performed great for the price but its beat up because I let my entire team break with it plus the material the wrap is made from is worn out and the strip that goes down the middle is coming off. Little bit of glue would fix that and it would be good as new though.

However, I would rather invest in a new break cue because I got the poison because of the price as I knew nothing about cues at the time and had never played pool. Now that I have been shooting for 5 years I know what my preference are and what fits me best when it comes to a break and shooting cue. Along the way, I bought a Gulyassy Orange Crusher for $40 from someone but I didn't like it all that much because the guy had been continuously using sandpaper on the damn thing and the shaft diameter is much smaller than it should be which heavily impacted the way it broke and made the shaft feel very flimsy for a break shaft.

I know about the majority of production cues but not so much about some of these custom breakers. I am going to look into some of the customs now but if you guys have some more testimonials of these production and custom break cues, keep 'em coming. I'd love to hear first hand accounts of how a specific break cue performs in your eyes... Positives, negatives.... Everything. All of this helps toward my decision and I really appreciate it.

Sorry about the super long rant. I tend to do that. Thanks for reading and thanks for the responses.

I've had a j&j, bk2, plain McDermott, bunjee j/b, McDermott stinger, and have broke with my playing cue. The best breaker for me is my playing cue. I used a low deflection shaft, so I feel I'm more accurate with my aim point and thus transfer the energy better.

Since I have one extra shaft that came with my playing cue, I am currently using that on the McDermott stinger butt. Best for me, by far. I would suggest getting a LD shaft for any of your butts, and putting a medium to hard tip on it.

Yes, MEZZ is a great breaker as is the OB break cues. Actually, I use MEZZ on 9 foot tables, and OB (not the RIFT model) on the 7 foot tables. This set up works best for me. I don't know why, I've tested it many times thinking it's in my head, but just works out best for me through trial and error.

I use to have a Kaiser J/B it broke good but it had the Phenolic tip and I didn't care to much for it so then I got the Lucasi big Beulah 2 and it dose well for me.

Alex Brick with a Samsara tip has worked the best for me so far. I like breaking with my playing cue(314-2 shaft) but I was always scared of smashing the rack too hard. The power and control of the Alex Brick/Samsara combo is hard to beat, and I used to use my friend's BK3 all the time before I got my own break cue.
