I have been on a 2 tablet 3 times a day Motrin diet for right at a month. Besides other things I have inflammation and Arthritis in my back. I will be playing 1 Pocket for probably 5 hours on Sunday against a person I am not supposed to beat.

Yes, I want to win but primary concern is going the distance and not be laid up the next day. If I can, I am back on the tables.

Might not sound like much to the younger guys but quite sure the older bad back club guys get it,

I wanna play.

I find playing pool therapeutic. Unless you have a back injury or something degenerative, playing pool I think is good for your back with the stretching and so on. I would consult a doctor though if you have a problem.

I got some of your tips by the way but have not tried them out yet. I am waiting for my new glasses so I can play.

I recently experienced severe sciatic nerve pain for about a month after recovering fron two knee surgeries, the first resulting in staph. It took from September to April for the jnee to recover....then sciatic.

I took an MRI last Friday. The result is a disc slipping between 4-5 disc pinching the vertebrae resulting in a pinched nerve. It seems to be going back, but if not, there is a series of shots that can fix it other than surgery.

Get a good orthapedic DR and get an MRI asap.

Good luck,
Phil

Maybe your getting down to low on the cue. Try staying upright as much as possible. Also getting down low causes muscle tightness, which brings on the pain. I am a BCA instructor and 88 years old and play five days a week for a few hours each time. I try to stay as loose as possible and I am probably nine inches above then the cue, which still leaves proper aiming technique. N.Y.Larry

I have herniated discs' at L4-L5, L5-S1, and finally 1 more in my neck at C4-C5. Other than nerve pain the full length of my arm that lasted about a week on 2 separate occasions over the last 6 years my neck doesn't give me trouble. My lower back on the other hand bothers me daily. I have had lumbar epidurals, 3 shots every 6 months for 3 years but you to get to a point of diminishing returns so I have not had them in awhile. When my lower back gets extremely sore I use my TENS unit which seems pretty effective. If you do not have it might something to consider. My doctor wrote me a prescription for it so it was covered by insurance. The TENS in not preventative, at least not that I know of, but it does help relieve pain after the fact.

Hey Tom.

My suggestion to you would be to looking into adding turmeric to your cooking and taking curcumin 95. This will help bring down inflammation in your system.

Also For inflammation the following have been shown to be effective as well.
Bromelain, Devils Claw, White Willow Bark and Egg Membrane. Ginger, Cinnamon, Cayenne and garlic are also known to be effective.

Also I would look into adding Hyaruronic Acid, Glucosimine and Chondritin to your diet. The combination will aid your joints and help return the natural cushioning that is supposed to be there.

Do some research on the above. You may find you can manage your pain through a combination of natural herbs and supplements.

Lots of good input. Been there and done most of it which got me at least Mobile.

I had thought of the not bending over as much but not tried it as of yet. I get it though as the aiming is done before you bend over.

What should be a big help being more mobile now is to take some weight off. Sadly about 30 pounds over weight at present and it wouldn't hurt to be skinny so say 50 off.

Sorry about you guys in as bad shape or worse but good to see you haven't quit trying or looking for an answer.

Quiting is not an option I care to look at.

And bacon?

Acupuncture is fantastic. Do lots of stretching, even if it appears to make it worse. Keep mobile. Heat patches are great, as is tiger balm.

A good osteo should help.

Try having a small myofascial tear in your neck that has caused your back to go to sh*t (desk job) and there is absolutely nothing that can be done to fix it other than taking a nerve blocking pain management type of pill like Tramadol (300mg slow release) :(

Happy days

I have a bad back, off and on. Not that old, but being a fat guy does not help.

1. Celebrex helps

2. Good shoes (Reebok) help (in my case, with orthodics) - especially when playing long sessions

3. Regular messages help

4. Standing a bit more upright helps

5. Making sure to alternate standing and sitting helps (doing either one for long periods is not good for my back).

I play 5/6 hours of one pocket a couple times a week. Tomorrow is our once a month one pocket tournament that might go 10/12 hours. My Rx for my arthritis is 600mg Motrin up to three times a day. I tried over the counter Aleve and two 220mg tablets gives me more relief than the Motrin. You might give it a shot. Every body is different and responds to different drugs.

A good friend with terrible back problems (not arthritis) uses cheweys from the marijuana store(legal in CA).

Good luck and take it off.

I'm a little younger than most people with similar problems, but have an irritated disc from my younger days in other sports. Good night's sleep, good hydration, and the chair are my best friends. I make it a point to sit down when not at the table. Helps me last longer by taking stress off the back.

I agree with jr, regarding the Aleve. I use it every time I play One Pocket, or golf.
Cheweys, from Higher Than a Kite Jewish Marijuana Store, sounds like a good idea, but don't take too much at one time. You don't want to be seen walking out the front door with the tournament director's wife and a box of Cheezits.
Good luck, Tommy.

I had back problems years ago. Back locked up on me, couldn't hardly move. Many visits to the chiropractor. Haven't had a problem now for over 25 years. Remedy -- ready for this -- divorce. Yep, got rid of the ex, met a new woman that I'm still with, very happily married.

Stress can do a number on you! Unfortunately others have arthritis, digenerative discs, herniated discs, etc, etc that cannot be cured or eliminated easily.

I was scheduled for 2 8" rods and 2 fusions in Nov. At the advice of my Dr. I cancelled.

Too many possible side effects. The Neuro couldn't give me an answer re my mobility after. It would mean up to 6 more months of rehab and BS that I wasn't willing to put myself thru at this time. I have been thru the grind since 2012 and don't want to put myself thru any more BS physically or Spiritually.

From the accident, I also have Meralgia Parasthetica, which is your SI nerve being pretty much destroyed. Lap belt.

I no longer enjoy League pool like I used to. I played in our end of the year tourney last weekend and spared in for another team on Sunday. So I had Fr and 2 full days of pool. I also ran one tourney and reffed so I was on my feet more than I really wanted to be.

I find it difficult to stand in front of the lathe for long periods so haven't been taking in any amount of work. If someone asks me, I will do it for them but don't actively go searching for work like I used to.

My back and body in general was shot. I am a good faker so won't show people what is happening in public.

My dog sees it when I get home tho.

I have 2 different strengths of Oxy, but that is for my brain op that I had and don't work on back discomfort.

I also have a Medical MJ license. That in itself has helped cut back on the Oxy and used to help me sleep. It doesn't do much for me any longer. So, I slowed down seriously on the MJ regimen that I once did.

I'm FKed. I have 2 beautiful Harleys sitting in the garage. I doubt that I will throw my leg over one this Summer. I don't want to sell them but thinking that it will be eventual. My 76 Electra Glide has been a work in progress. All I have to do is to put the gas tanks on it. I don't even have the ambition to do that much.

Yes the Motrin takes away the swelling better than most anything, BUT too big of dose for too long=stomach bleeding that can cause death. Pay close attention to your stools while taking. If they turn black or you sight of blood STOP. Johnnyt (retired nurse)
