How about get yourself a job

I agree with the message of the original post....get and keep a job and earn money.

That allows you options: Eating, shelter, transportation, self sufficiency...choices what to do with left over money...stuff like that.

Of course, you can do most of this using other people's money, if you are skilled enough at getting over on people. But much like a pyramid scheme, you must recruit new blood constantly.:p That is work of a different type.

The message would have read easier with paragraphs, punctuation and proper grammar...but the message itself remains clear without these conventions. (we get it)

btw...who among us had to endure diagramming sentences in third grade? subject, verb, direct object?....or some such sh1t...no wonder third grade was so tough both times..

btw(2)....I am in favor of '....' as a transitional device in writing...but Mrs. Green of third grade infamy was not. Guess who won back then?

btw(3)....I do admit that 'I seen that'...does make me internally cringe when I hears it. (My daughter says it to fk with me on purpose;))

OP...good message:thumbup:

Wow...looky at Mikey getting all medieval on our arses :p. Those are some fine conservative principles you have adopted son, and relates directly to the "welfare" culture of society today;). I knew deep down you were a closet conservative.

RJ, I just read his post and was thinking the same thing. He's a righty.

The best of both worlds: Get a job at a pool hall.
Make your money, always have access to the equipment, and get to know the identities and speed of all the players in the area. Be a cook, counter guy, bartender, whatever. One of the best players I have ever seen is the bartender at the one of the local pool halls, and he can even match up with people on his breaks if he wants to.

Wow! I will admit that I have found his posts somewhat brash at times, and to often be driven by a strong bias, but this thread has gotten way out of hand. I get one or two posts about grammar, but let it go already and get to the topic at hand. Just because your offended by his post doesn't mean that you deflect the entire meaning of the thread to his education and writing style.

I personally disagree with the original post. I definitely agree that people should work, but their is a significant conundrum in the pool world. To play at an elite level requires a certain time dedication. One that is generally not possible with a full time job. Thus, you can not play at a professional level and still work 40-60 hours. Plus the term playing "professionally" suggests that what you are doing professionally IS your job. The current state of pool however (their is no money in it), makes playing professionally a sacrifice in itself.

I don't really like seeing all the asking for personal sponsorship that happens on here at times, but I am sure it is note easy to make life work as a pool player. If all players got full time jobs, the level of American pool skill would decrease significantly.

There really is not an easy answer for professional pool, but I am sure that everyone just get different jobs will not help the pool world.

Why the OP got negative responses is because this whole entire thread is a personal bash towards Mike Wong, IMO

The OP is just a hater who goes bust playing pool and now is mad at people with talent. That is what i got out of it anyway.

Maybe i am wong

If a teenager is running over shortstops and is a real prodigy, how much practice/playing is required a week ? This is the person that can probably work and still play high level. Those with the drive while lacking the gift will probably duffer the most by working (game will suffer).

O.P. -- You must have made a great impression on Danny Harriman ? (See Mike Wong to US Open thread)

Unfortunamente, there are some primo pool players pissing their money away at the casinos rather than saving some dough and setting themselves up for the future.

Lou Figueroa

and others talking about what great 'investing' these primos are doing-ahahahahaha

Ok so there is abviously gonna be a big thrashing here against me but I really don't care. I just don't understand how pool players devote all there time to pool and believe they are so good, but yet they have zero money. They even go as far as posting threads looking for people to put the in tournaments, or money games. Am I missing something? If they play so good and pool is all they do, why do they need a stake horse or someone to put them in a tournament. It just makes no sense and it's kind of embarrassing if you ask me. So why are all these so called great players dead broke? And is it even worth trying to become a great player of being broke is your fate. I say get yourself a job and stop begging for sponsors and stake horses. I my self work 60 hours a week and I play pool maybe twice a week and I have never needed a stake horse or anyone to put me in a tournament, I gamble a lot and I lose more often then I win for sure and I always have money. I talk a lot of shit and if I make a game I play it, I don't travel I only play in philly area but I play almost every single person that comes threw and I take the worst of it all the time just because I wanna play and regardless if I win or lose, I still have money. BECAUAE I HAVE A JOB. So if more players get a job then there will be more money in pool instead of great players with no money to play always looking to steal or need stake horses. So if I'm wrong for pointing this out so be it. I just think it's sad that most top players are broke. And pool is never going to get anywhere if it continues like this.

Sadly your money situation and heart represent less than 5% of pool players.

I had the window open locally for years, play for anything and give up the spots just to stay in action. Problem is most pool players are playing for groceries. Don't see it changing anytime soon.

Philly has a lot of heart and has made open offers to gamble with several posters here. Screw these English majors!
You get that money Philly and do your thing.

Although some people hate to see this, but I admit what you said feels right to me.
Pool is one of my favorite hobby, I really enjoyed it a lot.
But people got to be responsible to their life first before they can afford a hobby, no matter how much they "love" it.
They can make their hobby career and that is a great idea.
However, if they can't, begging people's mercy is definitely not the best they can do.

If you could put a comprehensive sentence together at my school, there would always be 4 or 5 guys ready to knock your teeth out, for being a showoff.
I still catch myself reverting back to "holler" speak, whenever in a stressful situation.

Not all of us paid attention in English class.

If you fell behind in 3rd grade for whatever reason you never recovered unless. I was lucky to have a teacher who taught English as opposed to just punching a clock in 4th or 5th grade. I caught up.

So should I correct the spelling errors in the above post even though I can totally understand the intent of his reply? I think not. That would be rude IMO.

Arocdnicg to rsceearch at Cmabrigde Uinervtisy, it deosn’t mttaer in waht oredr the ltteers in a wrod are, the olny iprmoatnt tihng is taht the frist and lsat ltteer are in the rghit pcale. I would really like to know how many of the people here can actually read

the last few lines of what you wrote.Personally I can,but I bet a lot can't

You guys are bashing the wrong guy. Phillyviper is great for pool. I'm the guy that approached you in a Delaware county pool room one Sunday morning and asked you play a cheap race to seven of 9 ball before a Mezz Tour event. He didn't know me from Adam. You didn't lose that one. You took me 7-4. You play a nice game.

During the SBE my home poolroom was so crowded with out of towners and pros that a couple nights it never closed. It was phillyviper that got the action started and that was with Shane.

So his grammar isn't great but at least he has a good work ethic and he is great for the game. You will not find a better promoter for the game than him. You're bashing the wrong guy.

By the way he is a young guy that thinks old school. Good for the game.
Thanks for the support

Mike Wong requested that a separate thread be started.

Anyone with a Master's Degree, shouldn't be in the position of needing handouts or stakehorses. Anyone with talent, should be able to win enough locally to cover their own bills, unless there are extenuating circumstances.
