Billy and Danny: The Voices of Accu-Stats

I like these 2. They are impartial and respectful and have good words about the players
Didn't like Danny D before
These 2 are technical commentators but Accu-stats events are geeky in nature so I can see why they employ 2 technicals . In a TV broadcast like Matchroom event to have wider appeal they would have 1 technical and 1 generic foil like Andy Goldstein or Ted Lerner.:grin-square:

Love Billy, Not so much Danny. The best pool commentary I've ever heard was by Allison Fisher at the Ladies Legends Tournament on ESPN. She was fantastic.

Best

The best memories I have of watching Pool were at the Derby City Executive West. What did I like most about it? Danny and Billy IMO they are the best.

IMO the art of broadcasting a game is in building anticipation, excitement and storytelling, along with calling the game.

when you call out every shot and draw then lines where the ball will go before it happens, it ruins the game being played. there needs to be balance between teaching viewers how shots/position is played and building some anticipation on difficult shots to the average player.

Best commentary we ever enjoyed was Biliy and Grady -- they was like Siskel and Ebert.

Two totally opposed view points on almost every shot, with each able to eloquently espouse and defend their choice, and then grouse at the other. Listening to DL makes me want to run out into traffic.

Lou Figueroa

Im with you Lou.

I dont think either was as good with someone else.

That "magic" was most strong with Billy and Grady, with opposing views.

I miss it.

Something I don't get.

If you have a man like Danny D., an 80+ yo champion and member of 2 halls of fame, who is still able and willing to show up for commentating duty even after some recent major health challenges, why can't people be gracious and give the man a break?

And the guys who like to sling the insults, ironically, could never have beat him getting the 6b. Or getting a nice spot in 1p, you know, "not his best game".

I say have a little respect for a guy who has been around a very long time and has accomplished way more in our sport than 99.9% of us ever will.

The mute button is always an option. ;)

I remember some time back Danny announcing that he would give free lessons to anyone who wanted up at his home room.

what a nice gesture.

I'd say he has a lot more fans than detractors.

Agreed, Danny isn't gonna be with us forever, we should cherish him while we still have the privelage of hearing him..

I'm only an hour from his pool room, I should go down and visit him soon and get some lessons, just because of the fact he won't be here forever and he IS a legend.

duplicate post

Ah, duplicity....we all have that problem...biases and grudges not forgotten.
I think Lou is still miffed that Danny didn't remember him.
...and you and the Double D probably had words over one pocket in Arizona.

Well, I'm biased also....Danny is an old friend who would go to the wall for me....
..sometimes we have coffee on the patio, and in between giving me hell for smoking...
....he tells me a lot of good stories (not always about pool) and knowing I have an interest
in etymology, he has even elevated that part of my game.

So I'm applying for a license to drive a semi....when you and Lou are fixin' to cross a
busy highway.....look very carefully

I enjoy Danny but my favorite is Billy and Grady

I love Billy's precise talking style. Every word seems to have it place. "Archer is snookered and I'm not sure but the masse rail first shot may be available, with two rail position built-in on the five ball."

Both crack me up in every match. Like when Grady commented after a player bobbled in a shot "Well, that ball did go in, but he lost a little dignity on it."

First let me say that I have been a strong supporter of the MIH events. Think I have only missed one, seen some great pool and that's for the whole package not just the stream. I really think it's time for someone to say " Thanks Danny, now why don't you sit back and take easy". Billy still seems ok, there must be someone out there that he can partner up with that would add to the event. I don't know if he would do it but I once heard Earl do some commentary and he was very good, I don't know how he gets along with Billy, maybe some else has an opinion on that. Jay Helfert is also a possible choice. In every sport there comes a time when a change is necessary, Madden, Gowdy, etc all knew when to let it go, Danny it's time.

I have a lot of respect for Danny D. I would be very happy if I were to be as mentally fit as he is, once I become 80+. Considering this, Danny is doing a remarkable job! And as a European not knowing so much about American pool history, I appreciate the old stories very much.

I have to confess though, that Danny regularly does not call the right shot... With regard to the technical aspects of the game, there's a couple of better commentators out there. But that does not mean, I feel he is past his time as a commentator. But he definitely needs a side-kick for the technical aspects. So, Billy is complementing very well.

I like Billy, but there were moments in almost every match he had commented, where I wished he wud have stayed quite once in a while. He tends to talk without interruption. and the impression is obvious that he likes hearing himself talk.

But hands down, I prefer Danny and Billy over most commentators. I liked John Schmidt very much when he once did commentary. He was hilarious. Archer and J Jones did a fine job too.

With regards to the Mosconi Cup, Jim Wych for a broader audience is absolutely perfect in my eyes. Furthermore, he almost never calls the wrong shot. And I like Jay Helfert too. Although, he as Billy likes hearing himself talk ;)

I suggest the guys who are not happy with Danny and Billy, tune in on an Eurotour event and listen to the commentary....

I like Danny and Billy. I don't think Danny could ever do commentary for a broader audience, but I don't mind it at all for a pool geek audience. Billy is great, and I would like to see how he would do it with a broader audience.

Gideon<----Doesn't watch one-pocket

Mr.109, Its nice that DD is your friend, and would go 'to the wall' for you.. And I'm sure he has some good stories to tell..I have seen him many times, but as he will tell you, we have never even spoken!..When he was here in Phx., (late 80's) I was totally out of pool, never even went in ANY pool room, while working at UPS ..I did not even know the match (in '88) between him and RA took place, 'til long after it was over!

Don't know, don't care what Lou's problem is with him! I have no grudge with Danny, I just think he is possibly the worst commentator I have ever heard!.. As for your other remark I have seen him play IP, in a few tournaments. What I saw there, and based on his shot choices while commentating, I will tell you this...I would swim the proverbial 'river of sh*t' to get to play him, (real high)..In my prime, or well after!

PS..And NO, lest you try to hustle me for a bet, I would not care to go a few rounds with him in the ring!.. But I'll bet big $$$$ I can 'out cuss' him!..And yes, I will be watching for wild semi driver's! :p

Danny has loved the game and lived the game for many years. His words bring many tidbits of information and insight to the history of our game. He enjoys what he does and he should be enjoyed by those listening to him do it.

I don't know what the hell you expect from a guy his age. Kicking him to the curb is a cold shit move.

And as far as those of you who don't get the humor in his little jokes, it's your loss, not his for speaking them.

Hey Mr.109..If Danny needs that small amount of income to make ends meet, I surely would not begrudge it to him..And that may well be the case..But wouldn't a few extra hours of lessons, accomplish the same thing?..Is that not what his friends should be supporting?

Put me in the Danny camp.

The way that Danny commentates on matches may irritate some here but those very Dannyisms are the reason I watch.

Well, well, well.
I wondered how long it would be before you started an argument again about someone.
Sure didn't take long. (I expect it to get worse, if the past is any indicator of your future behavior).
Your forced absence from here made this a better place, in my opinion.

I don't know if he would do it but I once heard Earl do some commentary and he was very good.

I've heard Earl commentate in one match and based on that I believe he could be an excellent commentator for additional matches. John McEnroe was a hot-head and turned out to be a terrific tennis commentator.

Here is a taste of the analysis Earl has to offer, his prediction of the 10-foot TAR20 match:

Mr 3&stop, and Mr109...Longevity, should not entitle anyone to a free, never ending ride!..If it did, Ali would still be boxing, and Bob Dylan would still be singing!..No one is "kicking him to the curb"..He should be grateful for the life he has enjoyed, and like Lou Gehrig did so gracefully, be willing to step down!..It is very selfish of him not to!...He should just walk away, and bask in his past accomplishments!

PS..It is HIS loss, for not realizing that!

SJD;

Two things you must also take into consideration, imo:

1: You are in the distinct minority with your view on Danny D's contributions behind the mic

2. His employer for this gig, Accu Stats Pat Fleming, seems to be very happy with Danny in this role.

Merry Christmas!

best,
