Money taken off the calcutta without any prior announcement, is that normal?

That's what happened at the Texas Open 10-ball.
Many pros were there including CJ Wiley so they can confirm this but I'm 99.99% sure there was no formal announcement at the player meeting about the 10% off the calcutta going in the pocket of TD. There was also no mention of that at all in the flyer.
They basically took +3K off the calcutta behind players' backs.

Opinion? Is that a common practice?

I don't know specifically about calcuttas but I must say this - of course when chopping the $$$ in any way it should be stated clearly before hand but those putting on / running these tournaments need / want to make some money somehow and it's most likely not gonna be from a sponsor so there's only so many places the money can come from.

anything you take out of a pot needs to be announced before hand or it is stealing.

plain and simple. maybe the op missed hearing or the printed copy of the calcutta rules.

and in most places where a calcutta is legal there can be no rake as then the business is running the gambling for a profit and would need a special event license to hold the calcutta.

Hello Hello Baby Baby

If you are still feelim mention it to the people who issue the special event licenses and ask them to give you an opinion.

Come on, don't think you can meet a reputable TD promoter? Remember that most of them are friends with pro players. It's also the realm of "dump the match" for fun and profit if we can get a good bet on the line. Now you know why big sponsors don't want their image associated with pool.

3k for a TD? Do they all make that kind of money? How much did 1st & 2nd pay at this event. Johnnyt

Common practice or not, a rake on the Calcutta is the same reason that poker clubs get shut down. It's illegal in most places. Even Vegas, unless you are a licensed casino.

Calcuttas may be illegal, too, depending on your state laws. I know Texas is more permissive of gambling in some ways than the other 48 states (Nevada excluded).

I'm really hoping this comment was 'tongue in cheek' - if not you way out of line. You are WRONG to discredit all the legitimate TD and promoters-most of whom make very little.

Must be a funny (odd not humorous) life you live -- to have such a cherry outlook.

You cant expect the place to handle $20K in bills from 40 different guys, take the risk of it being stolen, lost; do all the accounting etc for nothing. I know if you asked me to do it, i couldnt say no quick enough-All risk and no reward?-Save it!!

They should announce it yes but it should be expected also.

hmmm

5% is a pretty common practice. This was a pretty small Calcutta in the scheme of things actually, but it was also a shorter/smaller event than what I'm used to with the Big Tyme Classic. 1st for the Calcutta last year was a hair over 20k (Alex Pagulayan).

I tip my hat to this TD.

He/she/they very clearly printed out where all the money went. I imagine they do that for all the tournaments they run. So if it wasn't announced beforehand it was most likely only because it was common knowledge.

A good calcutta team can easily be worth 10%. If you've ever experienced a bad calcutta you'll know exactly what I mean.

"Ah.....ah......ah we got Johnny from.....ah.......Johnny where you from? Hey anybody see or know Johnny? Oh sorry it's Jimmy. Jimmy you got yourself for 10? No? How about ah.....how bout 5? Ah....anybody want Johnny....I mean Jimmy for 5?"

Wake me up when it's over.

Raking the Calcutta for a percentage is very common practice and were a lot of TD make their money. Another way they can make some money is charging a yearly membership fee. I don't have a problem with either option as long as its spelled out. By the looks of the picture posted this/these TD did just that.

How can someone go run a tournament all weekend or even longer at times and be expected not to get some kind of compensation. The more successful the event the more they should make.

I agree. I think the TD here went out of their way to show exactly where the money went. As well, it is standard practice for the TD to receive a percentage of the calcutta. For those that think this is a lot of money for a single day's work, I should remind you, the TD probably started working on this months ago. A lot goes into these events and it's my opinion, the TD has earned every penny.

Looks like he clearly mentioned he was taking 10%. Oh, did he mention it before hand? Nope, but i'm sure he didn't mention a lot of things before hand.

Bottom line, would this info up front had stopped even 1 person from entering the tourney? Nope.

The only folks "losing" that 10% are the ones that won the calcutta. I'll take that action, If I win, you get a nice little tip. Seems more than reasonable to me.
