(I think that's "Elliott".)
If you are referring to Joe Tucker's video, where he is using a bridging fixture and shoots into the cushion, I think the cushion may help add side spin. The usual way to shoot the shot is to not shoot into the cushion.
Dr. Dave has a slo-mo video up of the Vernon Elliott bank including a measure of the angles involved. You can probably find it on his site.

Thanks Bob. I saw your video where you appear to shoot away from the rail?

Hard to believe there is 2 ways to make the impossible bank.

This shot is in the Banking with the beard book. After trying ti hundreds of times, I saw Joe shoot it and it seemed easier. I actually wondered if Freddie put that in his book wrong on purpose to hide the truth. He always liked to say he put bad shots in Efrens game so why wouldnt he do that in his book. lol

So, Dr. Dave.... is it the extra chalk on the OB that's required to make it?

To the point of chalk residue on object balls increasing throw, to give an idea of the potential difference...

I was on a lil road trip and went onto a room where a guy (? Maybe diegler?) Was taking 3 shots to throw the 2nx spotted ball into the corner.
He did it

Is that straight into the near corner or on a one-rail bank? For the near corner (about 45-degrees of throw) the balls would have had to be very, very strange.

Straight into the near corner, making the second ball spotted on the foot spot line.
He used the first ball as his cb and pushed through it slowly.
He rubbed the chalk cube on the spotted balls' contact points.

I use the same shot to illustrate the perils of dirty balls to students but I go for the far corner pocket from the spot (cue ball behind). It sound like he might have been playing a push rather than a stroke. To the far corner you can use a more or less normal stroke (with chalk added, of course).

Just FYI for the readers...Vernon Elliot never put chalk on the OB, and neither did Joe Tucker. I personally watched Joe make this bank 5 times in a row, moving the OB farther down the rail on each shot. He was using a laser device to correctly aim the shot...and a good stroke.

I wouldn't say it is required, but it certainly makes it a lot easier.

Dave

But Joe did need the balls to be dirty. He told me he tried the shot later at an expo or such and had no success with clean balls. I doubt that Elliott could have made the shot with clean, polished balls.

Well, to be fair, Vern was a pool hustler and probably rarely, if ever, played with shiny clean balls in the places he played. As far as Joe goes, they were just normal "played" balls. He did not chalk the OB in order to make the banks. I would agree that polished balls would make that impossible bank just that much more impossible...as you noted! :D
