Forum Spelling Correction Etiquette

There have been "many" advanced programs that help with spelling and grammar lately.

I recommend

Grammarly a web browser plug-in for Google Chrome & Firefox!
www.grammarly.com

Ginger Keyboard for Cell Phones has advanced grammar and spell check built into the keyboard!!!
http://www.gingersoftware.com/conte...ble-as-a-keyboard-for-android-mobile-devices/

They both are "Free" but you can unlock advanced features for a monthly fee. I never spent the money for advanced features. But, the programs work well for me with the free version! Given, so many members called out for grammar mistakes. This might help!

I am dyslexic .

I write everything backwards , I didn't I passed any grades in school .. just passed up to the next. grade.
Really didn't make any difference, I wasn't learning and total lost in what I was to learn .
I have always been the top 5 biggest kids in school and played foot ball .
I think one of the reasons I was just moved to the next grade was because of my size.

When I joined the US Navy I couldn't read or had a second grade reading level or education.
I couldn't read the tests in boot camp and was going to get kicked out of the navy's boot camp.
I felt so much like a failure.

The Navy gave me a choice, they had a special speed reading coarse and I could try that or I would of been discharge from the Navy because I couldn't read .

I put my heart into learning how to read and write in the speed reading classes .
I think it was 4 or 6 weeks of classes .

In the end I was reading 900 wpm at 90% comprehension ..
Issues is speed reading needs to be practiced daily, and I still write backwards.

If I had to do a written test, the teacher wouldn't be able to read my writing .

For me if I don't write , my writing gets worse and worse, so I use part of this forum so I can stay up with what extremely limited spelling and writing skills I have.
If I don't practice them I lose or forget how to read and write .

Call it what ever you care to call the ability to read, but its a gift... its special.

Its extremely tough for me to articulate my thoughts and put them into words so others can understand.

To wrap this up, I make tons of mistakes when I write and I would hope that you guys and gals could just educate me in a kindly manner.

I like using a lot of hyphens....they were more in favor when I attended school.

And I like to use a lot of these..................................................................................
......I feel it reflects the rhythm of my speaking voice.

'Course, I'm a James Ellroy fan......that breaks a lot of mental blocks on grammar.

I agree, Joey. I'm a computer illiterate baby boomer, but when I type on any forum or email, my misspellings are always underlined in red. It only takes a second or two to right click on the typo to easily and quickly correct it. I consider it a learning experience.

I'm a member of c. 6 online forums. Somehow a thread like this always seems to pop up. Similarly, it will most likely provoke the ire of many of its participants.

Perhaps many aren't aware of what the red underlining means? I'm a much better speller than a pool player, but I find the spell checking feature an absolute lifesaver. I would, however, be reluctant to correct a poster's spelling or grammatical errors. No, it's not relevant to communicating on the forums, but I like you, do sometimes find it really annoying.

I think any tiny step to improve our country's floundering literacy, is a step in the right direction. We have entire sub segments of our population that can't spell, write or even pronounce the "King's English". When I graduated high school in 1966, I literally did not know of one member of my class that didn't graduate. None of us cut classes, and it was generally accepted that boys and girls had mastered English by middle school at the latest.

My two examples which really drive me nutso are...

I seen

Constant misuse of there, their and they're

The following seems to be erroneously connected to Winston Churchill. I've never failed to laugh or smile upon hearing it, though...
“This is the sort of bloody nonsense up with which I will not put.”

Not blowing sunshine up your butt, Mike, but never, ever, did I notice that you had any issues when writing. :thumbup2:

On a related note, nothing burns me more than some smart ass belittling a member for whom English is clearly not their first language.

Mike....I enjoy your posts and I'm aware of your problem...you communicate well.
....so keep soldiering on.
A young woman who calls me her honorary uncle struggled with dsylexia all the way through school....she now has three books of poetry published and is known as an illustrator.....I'm so proud of her.

And I love your talent for photography......

I agree. Many people make writing out to be more than it is, or should be. Just say what's in your heart. :)

This thread's resurrection is a testament to the potential value of cryonics. :D

Since starting this thread many years ago, I have made a special effort to share my limited knowledge of words only with people who I know, like, or value. I generally do this in a private message or e-mail and I make sure to tell that person that my note isn't a self-aggrandizing thing and that I like and respect them as a person and just wanted to share my appreciation of words to them. I know that some people sneer when someone misuses simple words like lose/loose/there/their/your/you're/then/than/
coarse/course but I'm not one of those. I make plenty of spelling errors and grammar mistakes so I'm no JAM but I like good and honest people to be seen in their best light so I privately share with them how I use certain words.

So far, I haven't really pissed anyone off that I know of except for that one person who un-friended me on FB after I shared the difference between lose and loose. :D

Lose: (Click here to learn how LOSE is pronounced.) You're not going to lose any money because you won't even bet that a fat baby can whip a skinny baby.

Loose: Click here to learn how to pronounce LOOSE. You are just too loose with your money and you will never get ahead by making bets that you can't win.

We all accidentally use the wrong word from time to time. Sometimes we know the correct word to use but write the incorrect one instead. I've done it and when I've gone back and read what I wrote, I had to correct the error. :o Others don't always know if we just had a writing faux pas or that we just haven't been learned the correct spelling or use of the word.

In summary, I like using the correct word and I'm no wordsmith but when you catch me using the wrong word or spelling it incorrectly, please send me a PM because I will appreciate it. Just keep it down to one per week.

Thank you I am humbled.

I enjoy photography, and glad you like some of my photos.
Allot of members this forum helped me , wasn't easy learning the controls and terminology .
This one of my favorite photos.

Thank you, I am here to have fun, I hope everyone can over look that my writing and spelling issues .

I hate to say this but sometime spell check doesn't work when your spelling is way off. :frown:

How is this a 14 pg. thread ?
Once again I failed to read more than 12 posts. Hopefully by now the conversation has shifted gears.

I love, love, love this photo. I am going to see if I can get one of my boy hanging out the window. That is very cool!

I like to cogitate. It helps a lot.

When KC said he wanted to have gorilla sex with me I cogitated all over my keyboard.
On the other hand, if gorilla sex envolves having sex in trees, then I do have some experience with that. Did I ever tell you about the time i nailed this chick whilst she was hanging from a limb?
It was a beautiful summers eve (no, not the feminine hygiene product, dammit) and I was sitting with my girlfriend under a tree with a low hanging branch.
She whispered in my ear......
