why is it so hard to be left alone in a pool room.

what's the deal with the non-stop eyeballing, gawking, solicitations to play leauges and gamble and play for fun to gauge a person's speed, interrogations and other absurd forms of people not being able to mind their own business?

you don't need to know my full name or where i live or why i don't have a cue or how long i've been playing or if i know this guy and that guy.

no, i don't want to play in your league. no i don't want to play for a soda. no, i don't need you to sell me a cue.

i guess this is what it feels like to be a beautiful woman in a sleazy nightclub.

Hey there; what's your sign? :grin-square:

stop playing at e-harmony billiards. lol

The world is full of stupid cattle.
They don't know anything but cheap shots and mickey mouse hustles, they learned from some other dummy, they are not smart enough to create anything on their own, so they perform tricks they saw someone else try , that didn't work either.
I've seen about a million of them in my lifetime of pool , it used to be funny , now it's just disgusting and stupid.
If you are going to try to cheat someone ,{at the bottom , that's what it really is} at least use some imagination in it, not just , will you fall for this crap you've seen a thousand times before? huh, please?

A couple of weeks ago, my wife and I were playing, and "Rich" came up to me and started asking me questions.
"What's yer name?"
"Dave"
"Dave what?"
"Dave"
"Dave Dave?"
"Just Dave"
He then proceeded to say that the guys a couple of tables over were from Australia, and they wanted to know if there were any cool clubs in town to go to.
What he didn't know, was that the "guys from Australia" had talked to me before my interrogator came in, and I knew they were not from Australia.
I don't know what his game was, but I suspect it is a new form of casing your house; they get your name, look up your address on the phone, then they, or accomplices, can go burgle your house. After all, they know where you are, and if you leave the pool hall, they can call their friends, who can make good their escape.
So nobody gets my full name at any pool hall or bar.
Or am I too paranoid?

Sociable much?

Sounds like people trying to be friendly and sociable. Sorry you aren't into that.

That was my thoughts exactly.

One of things we do poorly is communicate about the wide range of folks that play pool.

If you dont want to gamble, a simple no is usually all that is required.

I appreciate when folks come up to me. I like to gamble cheap and if they are interested, great, if not, thats okay too.

Weird...you most be in quite the social pool room. Places I go people are pretty much left alone. It was almost a year of me going there regularly before I really started to get to know people.

Hmm...now I'm wondering if it's me and my off putting personality. Haha!

That is a funny story. The "Dave Dave? no, just Dave" part of it made me laugh. Yeah I do think you are being paranoid. Unless you have a very unique last name, then chances are, they are not going to be able to figure out where you live, just by looking up your name. By the way, I do not like giving out my last name either. When someone from the pool room asks me what my last name is, I just feel like asking "Why do you want to know?", even though I understand they are probably just making conversation. Maybe that is just the way most pool players converse with people they do not know. I always loved the typical pool hall crowd, and their personalities.

Yeah, I do not mind strangers coming up to talk to me in the pool hall. Just try to be nice, and honest in your replies. Maybe speaking your mind is not always the best thing to do. I guess it just depends on the situation. Just have to be careful in the pool halls. This is just the way I feel.

OP kind of sounds like a dick... Just sayin.

In all fairness nosey people can be annoying and I don't think it's appropriate in a setting like that to ask someone their last name ( unless maybe it's a tournament or something like that ). Why would they want you full name? It's no big secret but it's also none of their business.

Also, while the op didn't specifically mention it in this post it has been mentioned here on AZ many times - someone just goes into a pool room to get some good, uniterrupted practice in and just wants to be left alone. They can't keep good focus because they keep being approached for this or that. While that's never bothered me I can see it as somewhat of a valid point that would bother some people.

I hear ya. That's why I got my own table at home.
I'd rather practice in "lonely" mode than someone coming up to me to
ask me twenty questions.

I use tournaments for social hour and catching up with buddies.

In all my life of going to pool halls, I've never come across this. I may get the usually chit chat about weather or sports but never anything personal.

I used to play in Korean pool rooms growing up. Those guys are social but I think it's more curiosity that a non Korean would play there.

Whats the point of going to the pool room
if you want to be left alone?

maybe I am missing something, but the real tragedy at the pool room
is being left alone when you came looking to gamble

Now that is sad
