Mike Dechaine has no sponsors?

There is something to be said about a sense of freedom when you pay your own way in the pool world. Most -- not all -- sponsorships in pool are product, not money, or you get free entry and hotel expenses paid to attend an event. I prefer being a free bird or an independent agent for a variety reasons.

My other half was mentioned in Billiards Digest once, and the adjective describing Keith was a "loose cannon," which I took issue with and wrote a letter to the editor. To BD's credit, they did respond with a semi-retraction and kinder words about Keith, noting his colorful personality. It's hard to be in the public eye in the pool world because the critics are brutal, and sometimes unfounded accusations are made, which are absolutely untrue. This forum is a good example.

The one concern I have with Mike Dechaine representing Team USA in England is based on his last appearance at the Cup in England. He was having a bad day, I guess you could say, competing against another Team Europe member. Hey, all pool players have them. I don't care who you are. It happens. Dennis Hatch and a few others came over to Mike while he was sitting in the chair, losing. Between shots, it looked as if Team USA members were trying to encourage Mike, reassuring him, root for him, et cetera, but the expression on Mike's face was nothing more than disgust, and it appeared that the completely ignored his team mates' gestures who were trying to be supportive. This is what a team is all about. You don't ignore your team members.

To be a champion, you have to keep fighting back even when you're losing. You never give up. Mike appeared to give up at that Mosconi Cup in England, in my opinion, and ignored his fellow team members who were in his corner. And his caliber of play was poor, sad to say. I realize, again, everybody has a bad day. I really don't hold that against any pool player. It happens.

This is what concerns me about him being on the Team USA in England. What's more, reading he had a problem with Mike Zuglan on the Joss Tour recently, echoes an anger issue or personality problem. I know Mike runs a tight ship, but he is a reasonable person and treats everyone the same. No favoritism, which is what I like about Joss Tour.

You can't be a megalomaniac in the pool world and treat others with disdain or no appreciation, especially at the Mosconi Cup.

With all that said, I hope Mike has enough maturity in him to be a good team member this year, and I will root for Team USA. I hope he proves me wrong.

He most definitely gave up against Danny Smith when he unscrewed his cue and quit before the match was over at this past years US Open 10 Ball

He's one of those guys who's his own worst enemy & can't make peace with himself, therefore there can't be any between him & others either.

Lotta talent, but his personality flaws & drama hold that from reaching its full potential as well.

I just listened to the American Billiard Radio podcast (great podcast btw) and Justin Bergman and Mike Dechaine were featured. Mike stated he currently has no sponsors and is a free agent, with the exception of an APA sponsorship for the upcoming Mosconi Cup.

I find it hard to believe that the #2 player in America can't get a sponsorship. Surely he can't be that bad of a guy. I've met him a few times and he was always cordial with me.

SOMEONE SPONSOR THIS MAN!

someone sponsor him for personality class then he might get pool sponsors

DeChaine and Earl, are perfect examples of why many American pool players are looked down upon!..Drama, self pity and lack of personality, are their outstanding features!..They are at their worst, when they are not winning every game..Who needs that, in a team environment? :(

PS..Fortunately we have guys like Shane, and a few others, to make up for their pathetic, self-centered attitudes! :sorry:

When the day comes that any US player achieves what Earl has, give me a whistle.

Mike has had his ups and downs but he's a fantastic player and I think he's going to be one of the stars of Team USA in a couple of weeks.

I have to question if you have ever seen Earl live, or on stream?..My comments do not address his skill as a player, only his lack of character and his constant whining and complaining to anyone within earshot! :(

No one else comes close to creating a disruptive atmosphere for spectators, and opponents alike, and I refuse to give him a free pass for his mental instability!..By his own actions, his admirable skill as a player has always been secondary..His main draw will always be, he is a train wreck waiting to happen!

PS..But Dechaine is definately trying to catch up to him! :o

Then you should have added God gifted talent to his outstanding features, something you carefully decided to avoid. OK, we all get it. Earl can be a real pain in the ass, especially now that he's gotten old. There's no need to repeat this over and over again to nausea. Plenty of other players have been dicks before, Archer, Morris, Mika, Deuel, Bustamante. The list is long. Earl just beats all of 'em in that department too. It's not his fault if he's the best.

I did not 'avoid' his god given talent, I assumed that went without saying!..I have always felt, that for quite a long stretch, he may have been the best 9ball player on the planet!
But, the other players you mentioned do not even come close to the disruptive 'pain in the ass' that Earl seems to enjoy being!....I may be guilty of repeating myself, but he deserves it!..Your last two sentences pretty much seem to agree with my findings!

PS..BTW..Please refrain from using the word 'Dick's' when describing negative people! :)

I think Mike Dechaine should embrace the bad guy image instead of trying to conform to
His detractors wishes.
Karl Boyes does this role very well and I enjoy what he brings to a match.

So show up at the Mosconi in a suit with wide lapels, a Sammy Taft hat, and a violin case
modified to hold your cues.

...but lose the rack routine....it's nitty.

I'm actually borderline serious about this

If one asshole calls another guy an asshole, doesn't it cancel each other out and no fairies have to die?

Mike will be in position to silence all his critics in a couple of weeks. IMO he is a much better player now than he was when he played the MC before. He is the one guy I would want to play head to head against Jayson. Mike can bring it just like Jay can. Plus he has played him enough that he is not intimidated by his shot making ability. There is no shot Jayson can make that Mike can't.

I fully expect Mike to come up big in the years MC. I don't see anyone on Team Europe that is a favorite over him. I have never put Mike in the same category with Earl, they are two very different animals. Earl is near uncontrollable and Mike can be talked to and reasoned with. He has rarely ever caused me any problems in tournaments that I have run.

If his break is working, he is threat to win against anyone! And he has the most massive break of all ten MC players!

Exactly, suddenly pool players are "saints", and Earl is the bad guy ? This comes up time and time again... oh, if only Earl acted differently at the table, pool would be the number one sport on TV, and players would be making tens of MILLIONS ;)

Meanwhile, no arrests, no drug convictions, no wife beatings, no rapes, no child endangerment charges, no child porn, no burglary charges, etc. for Earl.

Don't look now but the NFL is gonna go broke with teams full of felons :rotflmao1:

Earl looks like a choir boy compared to some of the "saints" in the NBA and NFL, and even a few in MLB.

Yeah, he gets mouthy and acts up in a competitive sporting event with money at stake, someone, STOP the presses ;)
